Few studies exist on job duration in developing labour markets - an important omission both in our understanding of such markets and for the job duration literature, which is mainly based on developed-country case studies, which differ in structural ways. The main reason for this is likely data constraints in developing countries, since job duration analysis has intensive data requirements. Recently, two data sets meeting these requirements became publicly available in South Africa, covering the apartheid and post-apartheid eras. We use these data to provide a broad baseline about job duration in South Africa using survival analysis techniques with three main aims. First, we investigate to what extent stylized facts from the rest of the literature apply to South Africa; second, we analyse trajectories through the labour market; and third, we home in on early-career trajectories. South Africa broadly adheres to stylized facts about job duration: long-term tenure is a common feature of the labour market and the job hazard is non-monotonic and declines with tenure. Trajectories through the South African labour market, though, deviate from the developed-country case and we link this to the importance of labour market segmentation in South Africa. The influence of apartheid-era labour market policy on restricting the freedom of certain groups is clear in the results from this era, and interpretation of results from this time must take this historical context into account or risk reaching seriously misleading conclusions.

We estimate a model that allows for dynamic and interdependent responses of morbidity in different local areas to economic conditions at the local and national level, with statistical selection of optimal local area. We apply this approach to quarterly British data on chronic health conditions for those of working age over the period 2002-2016. We find strong and robust counter-cyclical relationships for overall chronic health, and for five broad types of health conditions. Chronic health conditions therefore increase in poor economic times. There is considerable spatial heterogeneity across local areas, with the counter-cyclical relationship being strongest in poorer local areas with more traditional industrial structures. We find that feedback effects are quantitatively important across local areas, and dynamic effects that differ by health condition. Consequently, the standard panel data model commonly used in the literature considerably under-estimates the extent of the countercyclical relationship in our context.

We find that ownership changes much less over time in private firms than in public firms. The average largest shareholder in private (public) Norwegian firms keeps the same stake in 82% (14%) of two consecutive years. In private firms past ownership dominates ownership determinants proposed in the literature, and the estimated relationship depends heavily on whether the economic model and the econometric technique capture the strong ownership persistence. This evidence suggests that lower share liquidity increases ownership duration, and that feed-back from economic outcomes to ownership structure is a less severe problem for identification when the firm's shares are illiquid

How do students think about future developments in educational science? The anthology is the start of a new series that sees itself as an organ to make students' perspectives on (scientific) reflexivity, networking, young science, the relationship between theory/practice, and inter- and transdisciplinarity heard. ThIS volume, which is based on the I. Student Congress of Educational Science, was developed in close cooperation with established educational scientists. neue Reihe!

Pharmaceutical firms spend increasing amounts in mergers and acquisitions (M&As), which raises the question of whether sufficient investment is left after mergers to further develop firms' internal drug development capability. We evaluate the effects of M&As on firms' post-merger R&D investments and drug development capabilities across drug development phases. This study builds on a novel database that enables us to evaluate the post-merger effect at the research project level and across development phases. A further novel feature of the study is allowing measurement errors to enter firms' R&D investments. Our study adopts a structural equation modeling approach, which is appropriate for evaluating a system of equations through which we examine the direct and indirect merger effects on R&D capabilities across development phases. We find that M&As have a strong effect on firms' drug development at the late development phases through economies of scope. At the early development phases, M&As serve to replenish firms' drug pipelines. The study shows that M&As have a direct and negative effect on firms' R&D investments. However, the overall effect on R&D investments accounting for enhanced post-merger R&D capabilities and product approvals turns out to be positive. M&As can be an effective instrument for firms to acquire drug development knowledge and technology in late stages of the development process (Phases 3 clinical testing and regulatory filing). Our study provide empirical evidence that investments in M&As in late stage of drug development help firms' growth and increase firms revenue.

ThIS volume, which is based on the I. Student Congress of Educational Science, was developed in close cooperation with established educational scientists. neue Reihe!
