    This Element argues that Ireland did not experience a disenchanted modernity, nor a decline in magic. It suggests that beliefs, practices and traditions concerning witchcraft and magic developed and adapted to modernity to retain cultural currency until the end of the twentieth century. This analysis provides the backdrop for the first systematic exploration of how historic Irish trials of witches and cunning-folk were represented by historians, antiquarians, journalists, dramatists, poets, and novelists in Ireland between the late eighteenth and late twentieth century. It is demonstrated that this work created an accepted narrative of Irish witchcraft and magic which glossed over, ignored, or obscured the depth of belief in witchcraft, both in the past and in contemporary society. Collectively, their work gendered Irish witchcraft, created a myth of a disenchanted, modern Ireland, and reinforced competing views of Irishness and Irish identity.     Du Formicarius de Nider à La Sorcière de Michelet, des textes écrits par des juristes, philosophes, théologiens ou médecins élaborent, en relation avec les savoirs et croyances de leur époque, la définition et la représentation de la sorcellerie démoniaque. Cette figure évolue entre la fin du XVe et le XVIIe siècle, se précise tandis que se développe la répression, et participe aux débats idéologiques, à la mise en place des différents systèmes de pouvoirs, politiques, juridiques ou scientifiques. Elle reste pour les Lumières et le Romantisme un domaine d’interrogation, trouve un relai chez les aliénistes de l’école de Charcot, et continue à jouer un rôle dans notre imaginaire. De ces textes émergent la figure singulière et mythique de la sorcière, et celle d’un complot destiné à assurer le triomphe du pouvoir diabolique sur le monde. S’y développent aussi des figures multiples, fantasmagoriques – sabbats, loups-garous, feux nocturnes, etc. –, toute une dramaturgie qui pourra inspirer les metteurs en scène du théâtre ou de l’opéra. Cette étude tente d’en cerner les différentes modalités d’écriture, dans une approche qui prend en compte la pluralité de ses composantes, sans masquer les interrogations auxquelles ces textes donnent lieu.
