    The paper examines of the division of labor within firms. It provides an explanation of the pervasive observed changes in work organisation away from the traditional functional departments and towards multi-tasking and job rotation. Whereas the exsisting literature on the division of labour within firm emphasizes the returns from specialisation and the need for coordination of the work of different workers, the present analysis focuses on the returns from multi-tasking, which is shown to arose from informational and technological complementaries among task as well as from the exploitation of the versality of human capital. The paper also explores how the move towards multi-tasking can effect the labor market and the distribution of firms across organizational forms.

    Ausgehend von der seit einiger Zeit in Wissenschaft, Politik und Teilen der Öffentlichkeit geführten Debatte über die "Zukunft des Ehrenamtes" geht die vorliegende Arbeit der Frage nach, welche charakteristischen Merkmale ehrenamtliches Engagement von anderen produktiven Tätigkeiten abgrenzen. Es zeigt sich hierbei, dass es wenig sinnvoll ist, von dem Ehrenamt zu sprechen, sondern dass sich verschiedene formale Ausprägungen (Phänotypen) sowie inhaltliche Erscheinungsformen (Genotypen) differenzieren lassen. Es wird ein Schema vorgestellt, das eine Zuordnung realer Ehrenämter in ein idealtypisches Raster ermöglicht. Dadurch wird nicht nur eine einheitliche Begriffsgrundlage geschaffen, sondern mit Hilfe dieses Schemas wird ebenfalls deutlich, welche Güter wo und durch wen in Form ehrenamtlichen Engagements produziert werden. Darauf aufbauend wird mit Hilfe eines mikroökonomische Begriffsapparates eine Theorie ehrenamtlicher Arbeit vorgestellt. Ein zentraler Punkt wird hierbei die Verbindung haushaltsund institutionenökonomischer Modelle einnehmen, um die Frage nach den individuellen Erträgen ehrenamtlicher Arbeit zu beantworten. Die institutionenökonomische Theorie begründet dieses Phänomen mit Transaktionskostenvorteilen sowie Unteilbarkeitsproblemen, die unter gewissen Umständen eine ehrenamtliche Produktion gegenüber anderen denkbaren Alternativen bevorteilt. Die Entscheidung für die Erstellung eines Gutes in ehrenamtlicher Produktionsweise ist als ein komplexer Prozess zu verstehen, in dem die begrenzt rationalen und durch opportunistisches Verhalten Dritter bedrohten Individuen versuchen, ihren Nutzen zu maximieren. Diese Nutzenmaximierung erfolgt nicht nur durch eine Minimierung der Produktionskosten im engeren Sinn; die Minimierung von Transaktionskosten bei gleichzeitiger Maximierung von Größenvorteilen sowie einer Maximierung evt. Kuppelprodukte scheinen die entscheidender Faktoren bei der Entscheidung für ehrenamtliche Arbeit zu sein. Due to the current scientific, political and also public debate in Germany about the "future of volunteering" the paper is interested in the characteristics that divides volunteering from other forms of productive work. It becomes obvious that it is not very useful to identify only one form of volunteer work but to recognize that several formal types (Phenotypes) and types with different contents (Genotypes) can be distinguished. By means of these criteria a new idealtypical classification is developed that allows precise distinctions between every kind of voluntary work in Germany. Based upon this theoretical concept a theory of volunteering is developed by using microeconomic terms. Asking for the individual revenues or benefits of volunteer work a combination of New Institutionalism and New Household Economics is used. The decision to produce a commodity through volunteer work is a complex process where the limited rational and by opportunistic behaviour threatened individuals try to maximize their utility. This utility maximization, however, does not only depend on minimizing the pure production costs; minimization of transaction costs and a simultaneous maximization of economies of scale and possibly appearing economies of scope seems to be a crucial reason for individuals to volunteer.
