    L'éloge de la beauté de la ville de Venise est peut-être l'un des aspects les plus connus de la ville. Le clichés de carte postale sont tout aussi répandus. Ce sont des images stéréotypées qui reproduisent les lieux monumentaux dotés d'une singularité absolument unique et diffusés à travers les mêmes images infiniment répétées. Il semblerait donc que l'on ne doive ou que l'on ne puisse rien découvrir de cette ville si fortement conditionnée par son mythe. Le travail de Renato d'Agostin tourne autour d'autres possibilités: Il dévoile les espaces architecturaux les plus connus en les soumettant à une analyse primaire dans laquelle les contours des volumes des architectures s'estompent sans perdre leur poids; la lecture des espaces est infinie; l'horizon de la lagune est tracé par les profils idéaux des îles. Il ne s'agit donc pas seulement d'un livre de photographies, mais d'un recueil de quelques visions possibles de la ville. Edition en italien/français/anglais/japonais

Sie hat die Geschichte der bildenden Kunst Venedigs wesentlich bereichert.“ Franz Siepe in: Portal Kunstgeschichte, 30.10.2012 www.portalkunstgeschichte.de/buch_medien/ Main description: Bereits Jacob Burckhardt bezeichnete Christus und die Ehebrecherin als das „venezianische Lieblingssujet“. Er blieb uns jedoch eine Antwort auf die Frage schuldig, woher im 16. Jahrhundert die Neigung der Venezianer für das Thema stammte. Heute sind rund sechzig Gemälde der Adultera aus der Seerepublik erhalten, die auf die große Fülle der dortigen Bildproduktion hinweisen, während uns zur selben Zeit im übrigen Italien das Motiv so gut wie nicht begegnet. Die vorliegende Untersuchung widmet sich diesem Kuriosum und legt unterschiedlichste Gründe dar, weshalb das Sujet in der Serenissima so deutlich favorisiert wurde. Eine Voraussetzung war, dass das Bildthema durch die monumentale Ehebrecherin in der Staatskirche San Marco niemals in Vergessenheit geriet. Denn sie ist keine Neuschöpfung des Seicento, wie bislang angenommen wurde, sondern beruht auf einem mittelalterlichen Vorgängermosaik. Wesentlich für das hohe Aufkommen des Motivs dürfte jedoch seine große Vielseitigkeit gewesen sein, die zahllosen Einsatz- und Interpretationsmöglichkeiten. So konnte Rocco Marconis Ehebrecherin als einzige Dekoration im Kapitelsaal der Mönche von San Giorgio Maggiore eine wichtige Funktion innerhalb des täglich abgehaltenen monastischen Zeremoniells einnehmen. Jacopo Tintoretto formulierte in der Adultera Chigi eine Gnadenauffassung, die kurz darauf von der katholischen Kirche verdammt wurde. Hingegen zeigt Tizians Glasgower Ehebrecherin Aspekte des zeitgenössischen Liebesdiskurses, Nicolò de Barbari wiederum stellte in der aus dem Hause Mocenigo stammenden Tafel Disziplinierungsversuche gegenüber einer Neuvermählten dar. Nicht zuletzt erhielt das Bildthema seine Bedeutung, weil es ebenso Eingang in die Staatsrepräsentation der Serenissima fand. Durch das mildtätige Handeln Jesu an der Sünderin konnte die Adultera auch als szenische Darstellung der clementia, der göttlichen Tugend, gelesen werden. Die ursprünglich in Gerichtssälen platzierten Ehebrecherinnen Jacopo Bassanos und Bonifacio de’ Pitatis eigneten sich ausgezeichnet, den Mythos Venedigs vom buon governo, der besten aller Regierungen, zu befestigen.
