    As a city that seems to float between Europe and Asia, removed by a lagoon from the tempos of terra firma, Venice has long seduced the Western imagination. Since the 1797 fall of the Venetian Republic, fantasies about the sinking city have engendered an elaborate series of romantic clichés, provoking conflicting responses: some modern artists and intellectuals embrace the resistance to modernity manifest in Venice's labyrinthine premodern form and temporality, whereas others aspire to modernize by "killing the moonlight" of Venice, in the Futurists' notorious phrase.Spanning the history of literature, art, and architecture--from John Ruskin, Henry James, and Ezra Pound to Manfredo Tafuri, Italo Calvino, Jeanette Winterson, and Robert Coover--Killing the Moonlight tracks the pressures that modernity has placed on the legacy of romantic Venice, and the distinctive strains of aesthetic invention that resulted from the clash. In Venetian incarnations of modernism, the anachronistic urban fabric and vestigial sentiment that both the nation-state of Italy and the historical avant-garde would cast off become incompletely assimilated parts of the new. Killing the Moonlight brings Venice into the geography of modernity as a living city rather than a metaphor for death, and presents the archipelago as a crucible for those seeking to define and transgress the conceptual limits of modernism. In strategic detours from the capitals of modernity, the book redrafts the confines of modernist culture in both geographical and historical terms

    Giorgione remains the central figure in the scientific discussion dealing with Venetian painting of the age, and accordingly the amount of literature on him is exuberant. The state of scientific discussion which harks back well into the 19th century, proves to be very heterogeneous, a selection of statements proves to be inapt as to serve as a basis for a further critical discussion. The outcome of all this is a general dissent, caused by the poor state of sources and the comparatively small number of secured works. In consequence, we are confronted with a constant struggle of attributions, increasing and decreasing in number, and a host of dates, often contradictory. Es gibt kaum einen anderen italienischen Maler, der die kunstgeschichtliche Forschung so entzweit hat wie Giorgione. Die Ursachen dieser Uneinigkeit beruhen auf einer dürftigen Quellenlage sowie auf dem Umstand, dass nur wenige Werke des Künstlers als gesichert gelten.

    The ludic element contributes substantially to the highly entertaining quality of opera buffa. Within the field of opera research, up to now this aspect has been neglected to a large extent. However, the denomination itself of the buffa-genre usual in the 18th century – “dramma giocoso” – typifies the central role of the playful element in this opera form. On the basis of play theories derived from different disciplines – anthropology, psychology, pedagogy and philosophy – the multilayered moments of play in the opera buffa and its performance context are enucleated by analysing the repertory of Venice, the then “capital of amusement”. Thereby, the concept of play is used as an interpretive key applied to this cultural phenomenon as a whole. Das Element des Spielerischen trägt wesentlich zum hohen Unterhaltungswert der Opera buffa bei. Dieser Aspekt ist von der Forschung bisher weitgehend vernachlässigt worden. Dabei weist schon allein die im 18. Jahrhundert übliche Gattungsbezeichnung „dramma giocoso“ auf die zentrale Rolle des Spielerischen in dieser Opernform hin. Auf der Grundlage von Spieltheorien aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen - Anthropologie, Psychologie, Pädagogik und Philosophie - werden am Repertoire Venedigs, der damaligen „Hauptstadt des Vergnügens“, die vielschichtigen Momente des Spiels der Opera buffa und ihres Aufführungskontexts herausgearbeitet und untersucht. Der Spielbegriff dient dabei als Interpretationsschlüssel des gesamten Kulturphänomens.

    Par le biais de l’examen d’une pluralité de sources, cet ouvrage analyse l’évolution du regard que les voyageurs français portèrent sur l’architecture et sur le paysage vénitien, entre 1756 et 1850. Lentement façonnée par les siècles, la Sérénissime est le produit de l’histoire et le miroir le plus éloquent du passage du temps comme le prouve le curieux dialogue qui s’est peu à peu instauré entre la nature et les vieilles pierres de ses édifices. Comment les voyageurs ont-ils perçu, d’un siècle à l’autre, l’étroite connivence qui se manifeste à Venise entre la nature sauvage et le bâti harmonieux ? Tout en se démarquant de la domination qu’exercent les études littéraires dans le domaine du voyage à Venise, cette étude reconstitue donc les transformations du regard sur l’architecture et analyse le processus de « réévaluation » progressive de l’eau lagunaire, du voyage naturaliste de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, à l’apparition d’un tourisme balnéaire dans la Venise des Habsbourg.
