    Ein fundiertes Lesebuch und Nachschlagewerk, das einem breiten, interessierten Publikum einen unmittelbaren Zugang zur Pflanzensymbolik in der mittelalterlichen Bildwelt vermittelt. Warum sollte es gerade ein Apfel gewesen sein, der auf das erste Menschenpaar eine so große Verlockung ausübte? - Die Bedeutung des Apfels als Symbol der Verführung mag uns noch durchaus vertraut sein, wie Anspielungen in der Werbung zeigen. Bei vielen anderen Früchten, bei Bäumen und Blumen, die in der mittelalterlichen Kunst dargestellt sind, ist das hingegen nicht mehr der Fall. Farbe und Form begeistern den Betrachter, doch bleiben die symbolisch verschlüsselten Bedeutungen vielfach verborgen. Das Buch eröffnet und vertieft das Verständnis für die mittelalterliche Bildsprache von Baum, Frucht und Blume. Es beschreibt ihre antiken und biblischen Ursprünge, gibt Einblick in die kulturgeschichtlichen Zusammenhänge und bindet literarische Quellen ein. Von besonderer Vielfalt ist die Ikonographie des Baumes, der als Weltenbaum, Lebensbaum, Erscheinungsort Gottes, als Erkennungs- und Ordnungssystem, Tugend- und Lasterbaum oder als Baum Jesse in Erscheinung tritt. Der Anschaulichkeit des Textes entspricht die aufschlussreiche Bildauswahl. So bietet sich ein sachkundiges und informatives Werk zum Lesen, Betrachten und Nachschlagen.
