    An enabling environment for the social and solidarity economy (SSE) largely depends on policy co-construction with stakeholders, and their commitment to implement policy across all levels of government, especially at the local level. The city of Durban is emerging as an exemplar for creating an enabling environment for the SSE to flourish through the co-construction process of policy making with relevant stakeholders and the implementation of these policies in a consultation process. Through the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (eTMM)1 in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), the city experienced success in establishing an enabling SSE environment by means of its Cooperative Development Plan (CDP). Together with partners and stakeholders2, the CDP delivered a model that serves as a tried and tested example to be replicated all over South Africa. Following various socio-economic challenges, the country experienced a proliferation of SSE entities, and active3 registered SSE entities now represent between 16% and 18% of the total of all active registered enterprise entities of all sectors of South Africa. Within the national SSE landscape, the KZN province is a stronghold, accommodating 32% of all registered cooperatives and an estimated 20% of non-profit organizations (NPO) including social enterprises in South Africa.

    This research into the non-domestic private rented sector (PRS) minimum energy efficiency standard (MEES) regulations included qualitative interviews and focus groups with local authorities and other stakeholders, as well as further data analysis. The report assesses: general awareness and understanding of the regulations; impact of the regulations on landlords; responses to the regulations; levels of compliance amongst landlords; local authority enforcement activities. The research was conducted for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) by ICF and The Behavioralist.

    Virtualization is one of the big buzzwords in communications. When formats are moved from real-world settings to online environments a variety of challenges emerge - especially when it comes to confidential interactions and personal relationships with key stakeholders. A research team at Leipzig University investigated the extent to which in-person formats can be virtualized based on the following questions: What are advantages and disadvantages of virtual stakeholder dialogues? Which factors need to be considered if virtual stakeholder dialogues are to be successful? Virtualisierung ist ein zentraler Trend in der Kommunikation. Wenn das persönliche Gespräch in den virtuellen Raum verlagert wird, können einige Herausforderungen entstehen. Denn Vertrauen und persönlicher Kontakt ist eine wichtige Grundlage für die Beziehung zwischen Unternehmen und ihren Stakeholdern. Ein Forschungsteam der Universität Leipzig hat an folgenden Fragen untersucht, inwieweit Stakeholder-Dialoge virtuell umgesetzt werden können. Welche Vor- und Nachteile bieten virtuelle Stakeholder-Dialoge im Vergleich zu Präsenzveranstaltungen? Wie können virtuelle Stakeholder-Dialoge erfolgreich durchgeführt werden?
