    Abstract: "This report summarizes deliberations over the Access to Human Genetic Resources held during a stakeholder dialogue process launched by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in 2001/2002. The dialogue process was designed to explore options of companies to address contested issues of intellectual property in their business strategies. To that end, companies were exposed to the concerns of stakeholders and urged to define responses to these concerns. The project involved major companies and transnational non-governmental organizations as well as renowned experts in the field of intellectual property rights. This paper briefly sketches the project and the process of the dialogue. The products of the process are the opinions, both concurring and dissenting, that the participants reached on the access to human genetic resources, subsumed in the final report to the WBCSD that emerged from the project.     Wie versuchen Unternehmen, ihre Entscheidungen gegenüber ihren zentralen Anspruchsgruppen (Shareholder, Arbeitnehmer, Öffentlichkeit etc.) sprachlich zu „verkaufen“? Und wie setzen sie hierzu die ihnen zur Verfügung stehenden öffentlichen Medien der Massenkommunikation (Geschäftsberichte, Mitarbeiterzeitungen etc.) ein? Mit diesen beiden Fragen beschäftigt sich dieses Buch im Kontext der Legitimation von Personalabbaumaßnahmen. Denn gerade diese manageriale Praktik stößt häufig auf Widerstände – sei es, weil sie gegen normative Regeln verstößt, den Eigeninteressen der Anspruchsgruppen zuwiderläuft oder als Zeichen einer Krise gedeutet wird. Aus diesem Grund haben Unternehmen hier ein besonderes Interesse daran, dass ihr Verhalten als legitim wahrgenommen wird. Empirisch werden hier die sprachlichen Legitimationspolitiken von Unternehmen an zwei konkreten Fällen in der deutschen Kreditwirtschaft (Großbanken) untersucht.     Large-scale investments in natural resources (extractives as well as agriculture) can help transform African economies by accelerating economic growth, creating jobs and strengthening the links between local economies and the global economy more broadly. However, they often end up violating rights, which in turn may lead to social protests and political instability. This Working Paper develops an analytical framework for analysing the implementation of large-scale investments in natural resources. It focuses on the triangular relations between investors, local populations and ruling elites. The framework treats the outcomes of these triangular relationships as involving "reciprocal exchange deals" between investors and local populations, "compatible interests" between ruling elites and investors, and "productive social relations" between local populations and ruling elites. We show that, in order to understand why some investments are implemented more successfully than others, it is necessary to grasp the politics behind an investment. The paper also explores the conditions under which investments can be implemented without violating the rights of local populations. The paper is based on a review of the relevant bodies of literature and is linked to ongoing empirical studies of large-scale natural resource investments in Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda related to gas/oil, mining and agriculture.

    The Peace pillar of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development encompasses a diverse range of issues including stability and effective governance. Reforming the public sector is high on the government’s agenda, but involves a number of challenges: the gap between planning and implementation of policy objectives remains large; insufficient public participation in policy making is undermining the efficient allocation of resources toward public needs and development goals; under-development of evidence-based regulations is hampering the creation of a business-friendly environment essential to high value-added activities; and high levels of perceived corruption are weakening business confidence and public trust in the government. Thailand’s 12th Economic and Social Development Plan emphasises the importance of public sector reform. It sets out measures to strengthen co-ordination across ministries and agencies aimed at improving implementation of policy programmes, boosting public participation in policy making, improving online access to government services and combating corruption by strengthening integrity measures. The upcoming 20-year National Strategy and the accompanying National Reform Plan are expected to pave the way for future development. However, an inclusive and consultative process will be essential to ensure the success of reform efforts. Hinterland connectivity and landside productivity are increasingly important for port performance. Yet conflicts over congestion, pollution and other negative impacts of container traffic are an increasing source of tensions. Managing these tensions requires a clear understanding of the issues and identification of the stakeholders involved in the transport system of the immediate port hinterland.

    This paper investigates how collaboration between stakeholders can help make supply chains more resilient. It explores innovative ways to operate supply chains and reinforce their resilience, for instance through crowd shipping or gainsharing. The paper also includes a case study on how multi-stakeholder initiatives and public-private partnership can help foster collaboration in supply chains for increased efficiency.

    Im Projekt wurde ein Modell zum strategischen Personalrisikomanagement entwickelt, um die Akzeptanz des Themas als Teil des unternehmensweiten Risikomanagements zu stärken. Das Tranferprojekt zeigt, wie gemeinsam mit dem Management (Personal- und Risikomanagement), Betriebsrat und idealerweise Vertreter*innen beider Bänke des Aufsichtsrats ein Personalrisikomanagement in der Unternehmenspraxis etabliert bzw. das Personalrisikomanagement Stakeholder-orientiert geschärft werden kann. Das Projekt unterstützt die Akteure dabei, einen praxisorientierten Einstieg zur Integration von Personalrisiken in das Risikomanagement und zu deren Quantifizierung zu schaffen. Aus Sicht der Mitbestimmung werden so die Wirksamkeit und der Erfolgsbeitrag guter Personalarbeit transparent und steuerbar.

    A governance indicator for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) is presented. The indicator adopts stakeholder theory in selecting its elements, which also include a few general governance principles as well as board features. The paper reviews main governance indicators treated in the literature, which are mostly applied to publicly traded firms. It then proposes a specific indicator for SMEs which, in general, are private. The indicator takes into account—in its structure—the evaluation style of National Quality Awards, as a pattern to measure, by assigning points, a great number of variables. Governance variables included in the indicator are grouped into areas, themes, dimensions and elements, in order to make them operative and measurable. Measurement is performed by means of a questionnaire—reproduced as an appendix—with nominal and interval scales. Maximum scores for each question are assigned following multiple attribute decision theory. The article concludes with reflections on the measurement problem in the social sciences and final thoughts on the characteristics of the proposed indicator. The paper, based on Yacuzzi (2007), is part of an on-going research project.     Research on organizational crises has typically focused on case studies or measures for crisis prevention, while the social dimension of crises has remained largely unexplored. In some rare exceptions, differences in the efficacy of reactive strategies depending on the type of crisis have been reported. However, the mechanisms behind these differences remain unclear. This paper aims to fill this gap by arguing that organizational crises and effective reactions are linked by different dimensions of legitimacy perceived by stakeholders. To this end, after elaborating on the role of legitimacy in organizational crises, typologies of crises as well as reactive strategies are presented, accompanied by propositions about possible links.

    This paper argues that the perspective of ordonomic - a rational-choice based analysis of (interdependencies between) social structure and semantics - can provide new insights into the changing role of business in society. We claim (a) that the proper role of business is societal value creation, (b) that business firms - as economic players - can take on the role of improving the rules of the game, i.e., act as corporate citizens, and (c) that business ethics can and should provide theoretical guidance for "corporate citizenship" and the political processes of "new governance," in which business firms, together with civil society organizations and state actors, work together to solve problems, especially at an international (and sometimes even global) scale. Finally, we show (d) that this perspective requires overcoming two blind spots in recent discourse about the appropriate analytical foundations of business ethics.
