    Modern academia is increasingly competitive yet the writing style of social scientists is routinely poor and continues to deteriorate. Are social science postgraduates being taught to write poorly? What conditions adversely affect the way they write? And which linguistic features contribute towards this bad writing? Michael Billig's witty and entertaining book analyses these questions in a quest to pinpoint exactly what is going wrong with the way social scientists write. Using examples from diverse fields such as linguistics, sociology and experimental social psychology, Billig shows how technical terminology is regularly less precise than simpler language. He demonstrates that there are linguistic problems with the noun-based terminology that social scientists habitually use - 'reification' or 'nominalization' rather than the corresponding verbs 'reify' or 'nominalize'. According to Billig, social scientists not only use their terminology to exaggerate and to conceal, but also to promote themselves and their work

    As war and mass emigration across oceans increased the distances between ordinary people in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many of them, previously barely literate and unaccustomed to writing, began to communicate on paper. This fascinating account explores this surge of ordinary writing, how people met the new challenges of literacy and the importance of scribal culture to the history of individual experience in modern Europe. Focusing on correspondence and other writing genres produced by French and Italian soldiers in the trenches in the First World War, as well as Spanish emigrants to the Americas, the book reveals how these writings were influenced by dialect and oral speech and were oblivious to the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Through their sometimes moving stories, we gain an insight into the importance to ordinary peasants of family, village and nation at a time of rapid social and cultural change

    Schrift ist eine hochgradig variable und im zunehmend mediatisiert-schriftlichen Kommunikationsalltag sozial immer bedeutsamer werdende Ressource - dies wird der Soziolinguistik erst allmählich bewusst. Variation findet man dabei nicht nur im Bereich der Schreibung, sondern auch zwischen verschiedenen Schriftsystemen und im Bereich der visuellen Gestaltung (Graphetik, Typographie). Dieses Buch nimmt verschiedene Formen und soziale Funktionen solcher "graphischer Variation" in den Blick, entwickelt eine interpretativ-soziolinguistische Theorie zur Beschreibung und Erklärung skriptural-graphischer Variationspraktiken und leistet somit einen grundlegenden Beitrag zur sich derzeit formierenden "Soziolinguistik der Schriftlichkeit".Dabei diskutiert das Buch kommunikationstheoretische Konsequenzen einer sprachwissenschaftlichen Hinwendung zur Visualität und Materialität, es präsentiert methodische und konzeptuelle Vorschläge zur soziolinguistischen Analyse graphischer Variation und es exemplifiziert das Phänomen u.a. anhand graphisch-visueller Identitätsarbeit, Ideologiekommunikation und Genrekonstitution

    Die Beherrschung von Schriftlichkeit ist zweifelsohne ein zentraler Faktor für den Bildungserfolg von Kindern und Jugendlichen. Auch mit Blick auf die sprachliche Heterogenität der Schülerschaft fehlt es bisher jedoch an Kenntnissen, wie schriftsprachliche Kompetenzen erworben werden. In dieser Studie wird aus der Perspektive der Schreibentwicklungsforschung der Frage nachgegangen, ob und wie sich die Schreibfähigkeiten von ein- und mehrsprachigen SchülerInnen der Sekundarstufe II und Studierenden unterscheiden. Dazu wird ein Korpus von 370 Texten analysiert und insbesondere der Gebrauch komplexer Nominalphrasen in den Blick genommen. Diese stellen aufgrund ihres Kontextualisierungspotentials eine wichtige Voraussetzung für die Produktion konzeptionell schriftlicher Texte dar. Die Ergebnisse liefern wichtige Erkenntnisse für die Konzeption von Sprachförderkonzepten und machen deutlich, dass der Faktor "Mehrsprachigkeit" zur Erklärung von unterschiedlichen sprachlichen Voraussetzungen und Leistungen in der gymnasialen Oberstufe und bei Studierenden nur einen eingeschränkten Nutzen hat

    Ships, soldiers, missionaries and settlers drove the process of European expansion from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In doing so, they set in motion the circulation of images, manuscripts and books between different continents. The Portuguese Estado da India, the Spanish Carrera de Indias, the Dutch, English and French East-Indian Companies, as well as the Society of Jesus, all imaginatively fixed and inscribed the details of their travels and their discourses in letters, logs, diaries and histories. They also regulated the circulation of this material through the construction of archives, censorship, control of publications and secrecy. In addition, they introduced alphabetic writing into societies without alphabets, which was a major factor in changing the very function and meaning of written culture. There is very little in the modern literature on the history of written culture which describes specific practices related to writing that were anchored in the colonial context. This book explores the extent to which the types of written information that resulted during colonial expansion shaped the numerous and complex processes of cultural exchange from the 16th century onwards. Focusing on writing in colonial Africa and the Americas, it ranges from rock art and proto-writing in Africa to the alphabetisation of Mexican scribes (tlahcuilos), from the missionary writing of Ethiopian Jesuits in the 17th century to travel writing and other forms of popular literature in the 19th century and official documents of various kinds.
