In most OECD countries, pension reform policy has decreased the level of intragenerational redistribution over the last three decades, that is, redistribution among members of the same generation with high and low pension entitlements. This trend has occurred despite heterogeneity in life expectancy linked to socioeconomic status having a regressive impact on outcomes. This paper contributes to solving this puzzle by means of a controlled laboratory experiment. We study the causal relationship between inequality of entitlements, mortality risk, and the size of redistribution in a stylized social security system. We find that mortality risk, when negatively correlated with entitlements, significantly lowers subjects' willingness to redistribute payoffs from high-entitlement to low-entitlement subjects. We explain this finding with efficiency preferences and an alienation effect. The alienation effect is the tendency to attach a lower social weight to the short-lived poor.

Existing research has demonstrated carryover effects whereby emotions generated in one context influence decisions in other, unrelated ones. We examine the carryover effect in relation to valuations of risky and ambiguous lotteries with a novel focus on comparing the carryovers arising from a targeted stimulus (designed to elicit a specific emotion) with those arising from a naturalistic stimulus (expected to produce a more complex emotional response). We find carryover effects using both a standard targeted stimulus and a naturalistic one, but they are stronger for the naturalistic stimulus and in the context of ambiguity. These effects are also highly gender-specific with only males being susceptible. To probe the emotional foundations of behaviour, we conduct analysis relating individual self-reports of emotions to incentivised valuation behaviour. Our results cast doubt on the interpretation of some evidence purporting to establish links between specific incidental emotions and risk taking.

The three projects of this thesis investigate consumers' financial decision making. For two projects I employ survey questions to elicit subjects' preferences and link these to insurance demand decisions. In the third project I conduct an experiment on a representative sample to find out how prospect theory should best be applied to an intertemporal context.

(DIPF/Orig.) Abstract: In this review, 33 studies are described that examined the use of digital media in non-formal contexts to promote learning processes and competencies of children and young people at the German and international level. The focus will be on professional support in the use of digital learning games, apps, and online platforms, the opportunities for promoting certain educational and competence areas, and protection against risks in online settings. Informal learning environments, such as family households, are explicitly excluded. (DIPF/Orig.)
