"Imperial-Time-Order is an engagingly written critical study on a persistent historical way of thinking in modern China. Defined as normalization of unification and moralization of time, Qian suggests, the imperial-time-order signifies a temporal structure of empire that has continued to shape the way modern China developed itself conceptually. Weaving together intellectual debates with literary and media representations of imperial history since the late Qing period, ranging from novels, stage plays, films, to television series, Qian traces the different temporalities of each period and takes 'time' as the analytical node by which issues of empire, nation, family, morality, individual and collective subjectivity are constructed and contested"...Provided by publisher

In Creating the Empress, Vera Proskurina examines the interaction between power and poetry in creating the imperial image of Catherine the Great, providing a detailed analysis of a wide range of Russian literary works from this period, particularly the main Classical myths associated with Catherine (Amazon, Astraea, Pallas Athena, Felicitas, Fortune, etc.), as well as how these Classical subjects affirmed imperial ideology and the monarch's power. The book allows for the viewing of these themes and motifs not only in the immediate historical context of Catherine II's reign, but also in the context of the broader European symbolic traditions. Each chapter of the book revolves around the major events of Catherine's reign (as well as some major literary works) that give a broad framework to discuss the evolution of important recurring motifs and images. --From publisher's description

The Roman Empire has been a source of inspiration and a model for imitation for Western empires practically since the moment Rome fell. Yet, as Julia Hell shows in 'The Conquest of Ruins', what has had the strongest grip on aspiring imperial imaginations isn't that empire's glory but its fall - and the haunting monuments left in its wake. Hell examines centuries of European empire-building - from Charles V in the sixteenth century and Napoleon's campaigns of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries to the atrocities of Mussolini and the Third Reich in the 1930s and '40s - and sees a similar fascination with recreating the Roman past in the contemporary image.

Coup d'état as cross-dressing -- Astraea's coming to the Russian throne -- Catherine the healer -- Toppling the Bronze horseman -- The war in Greek garb -- The birth of Felitsa -- Politics as carnival in Derzhavin's Ode to fortune -- Ridiculing the monarch. --From publisher's description Coup d'e⁺ѓtat as cross-dressing -- Astraea's coming to the Russian throne -- Catherine the healer -- Toppling the Bronze horseman -- The war in Greek garb -- The birth of Felitsa -- Politics as carnival in Derzhavin's Ode to fortune -- Ridiculing the monarch.
