Alfred Rahlfs (1865–1935) is among the most important textual philologists of the 20th century. His wide-ranging works in researching and editing the Greek Old Testament, known as the Septuagint, are still regarded as groundbreaking today. For the first time, this monograph comprehensively presents Rahlfs’s writings in their biographical and historical context Mit dem Namen von Alfred Rahlfs verbindet sich vor allem seine 1935 erschienene ‚Handausgabe', die noch immer als weltweit gebrauchte Standardedition der Septuaginta gilt. Demgegenüber geriet sein umfassendes wissenschaftliches Gesamtœuvre zunehmend in Vergessenheit, während seine Biographie bis heute weitgehend im Verborgenen geblieben ist. In der vorliegenden Monographie wird zum ersten Mal der Versuch unternommen, die gesamte Vielfalt der Rezensionen, Abhandlungen und Textausgaben von Rahlfs einer detaillierten werkgeschichtlichen Analyse zu unterziehen, an die sich eine synthetische Rekonstruktion seiner textkritischen und editionsphilologischen Methodik anschließt. Auf diese Weise werden die bahnbrechenden Erkenntnisse dieses großen Göttinger Gelehrten in ihrer bis ins 21. Jahrhundert reichenden wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Bedeutung für die Erforschung und kritische Edition des Septuaginta-Textes transparent, deren Verankerung in der Editionsphilologie des 19. Jh. ebenso wie ihre im institutionellen Rahmen des 1908 gegründeten Septuaginta-Unternehmens der Göttinger Akademie der Wissenschaften sich vollziehende Weiterentwicklung aus der erstmaligen vollständigen Darstellung seiner Biographie ersichtlich werden

Anna Daniel überwindet diese theoretischen, narrativen und disziplinären Engführungen und untersucht mithilfe eines postkolonialen Analyseansatzes die Grenzziehungen des religionssoziologischen Diskurses. This book collects twenty two previously published essays and one new one by Erich S. Gruen who has written extensively on the literature and history of early Judaism and the experience of the Jews in the Greco-Roman world. His many articles on this subject have, however, appeared mostly in conference volumes and Festschriften, and have therefore not had wide circulation. By putting them together in a single work, this will bring the essays to the attention of a much broader scholarly readership and make them more readily available to students in the fields of ancient history and early Judaism. The pieces are quite varied, but develop a number of connected and related themes: Jewish identity in the pagan world, the literary representations by Jews and pagans of one another, the interconnections of Hellenism and Judaism, and the Jewish experience under Hellenistic monarchies and the Roman empire.

Are the rituals in the Hebrew Bible of great antiquity, practiced unchanged from earliest times, or are they the products of later innovators? The canonical text is clear: ritual innovation is repudiated as when Jeroboam I of Israel inaugurate a novel cult at Bethel and Dan. Most rituals are traced back to Moses. From Julius Wellhausen to Jacob Milgrom, this issue has divided critical scholarship. With the rich documentation from the late Second Temple period, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, it is apparent that rituals were changed. Were such rituals practiced, or were they forms of textual imagination? How do rituals change and how are such changes authorized? Do textual innovation and ritual innovation relate? What light might ritual changes between the Hebrew Bible and late Second Temple texts shed on the history of ritual in the Hebrew Bible? The essays in this volume engage the various issues that arise when rituals are considered as practices that may be invented and subject to change. A number of essays examine how biblical texts show evidence of changing ritual practices, some use textual change to discuss related changes in ritual practice, while others discuss evidence for ritual change from material culture.

Die Studie rekonstruiert mit den Methoden der Redaktionsgeschichte die Entstehung der Josefsgeschichte. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Erzählung sukzessive zu ihrer heutigen Gestalt angewachsen ist. Bereits der älteste Bestand (Gen 37–41*) dürfte vor dem Hintergrund der Vätergeschichte zu verstehen sein, während eine Verbindung mit dem Exodus erst sekundär – aber noch vorpriesterschriftlich – mit dem Aufbruch Israels nach Ägypten erfolgt sein wird. Die Arbeit rekonstruiert mit den Methoden der Redaktionsgeschichte die literarische Entstehung der Josefsgeschichte (Gen 3750) und fragt in diesem Zusammenhang auch nach ihrer Funktion als Fortführung der Vätererzählungen bzw. als Hinführung zum Exodus. Dabei wird versucht, sich weitestgehend von Vorannahmen bzw. übergeordneten Modellen zu lösen und stattdessen von einer erneuten Analyse der Einzeltexte auszugehen. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass die Josefsgeschichte sukzessive zu ihrer heutigen Gestalt angewachsen ist. Bereits der älteste Bestand (Gen 37 41*) dürfte vor dem Hintergrund der Vätergeschichte (Gen 1236*) zu verstehen sein, wohingegen eine Verbindung mit dem Exodus erst sekundär, aber noch vor der Einfügung des priesterschriftlichen Materials, mit dem Aufbruch Israels nach Ägypten (Gen 45ff) erfolgt sein wird.. - Die Studie rekonstruiert mit den Methoden der Redaktionsgeschichte die Entstehung der Josefsgeschichte.
