Franz Karl Praßl ist Professor für Gregorianik und kirchenmusikalische Werkkunde an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz. Sind Menschen im Gottesdienst Kunden? Ist der Gottesdienst eine Dienstleistung? Eine große Mehrheit der Gottesdienstbesucher beantwortet diese Fragen mit „Nein“. Solche ökonomischen Kategorien widersprechen offenbar stark dem eigenen Selbstverständnis als Kirchgänger und dem Verständnis des Gottesdienstes als ein Geschehen, in dem theologisch gesehen vor allem Gott handelt. Eine Sache aber ist die Einschätzung und Beurteilung von Kundenvokabular und Dienstleistungsbegrifflichkeit – eine andere Sache demgegenüber das tatsächliche Denken und Verhalten von Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern an Sonntagsgottesdiensten. Der Autor der vorliegenden Studie hat einen Fragebogen entwickelt, um vorher theoretisch erarbeitete Merkmale eines „Kundenhabitus“ auch beim Kirchgang zu verifizieren. Dabei geht es um Wahlverhalten, Bedürfnis- und Nutzenorientierung sowie Ansprüche an Professionalität und Qualität. Es zeigt sich, dass auch bei häufigen Kirchgängern ein entsprechender Kundenhabitus deutlich erkennbar ist und zwischen gottesdienstlichen „Stamm“- und „Laufkunden“ unterschieden werden kann. Der Studie liegt die Befragung von knapp 2000, der Kirche überwiegend nahestehende Personen zugrunde. Die empirischen Auswertungen werden in der Arbeit gerahmt durch eine kurze Geschichte des Kundenbegriffs, einen Überblick über seine theologische Bewertung im Zuge der Diskussion um das sog. „Kirchenmanagement“ und praktisch-theologische Erwägungen zum Verhältnis von Auftrags- und Bedürfnisorientierung im Gottesdienst.

    Bei der Suche nach einer ''protestantischen Wirtschaftsethik'' in China wurde bisher eine Bevölkerungsgruppe vernachlässigt: Chinas Protestanten. Der chinesische Protestantismus ist zur Zeit die am schnellsten wachsende Religion der Welt. Es ist ein ''Religionsfieber'', das sich vor dem Hintergrund eines rapiden Wirtschaftswachstums abspielt. Welche Rolle werden Chinas Protestanten im Modernisierungsprozess spielen? Ist von ihnen möglicherweise eine besonders wirtschaftsfreundliche Haltung zu erwarten? Katrin Fiedler arbeitet zunächst die chinesische Diskussion um den Begriff ''Wirtschaftsethik'' auf, wie er von regierungsnahen Wissenschaftlern verstanden wird. Dem sinomarxistischen Ideal der neunziger Jahre entsprechend, wird ''Wirtschafts-ethik'' vornehmlich als Instrument der Wirtschaftsförderung und -regulierung verstanden. Diesem Ideal werden die wirtschaftsethischen Lehren der protestantischen Kirche gegenübergestellt: Während der Staat eine wirtschaftsförderliche Wirt-schaftsethik wünscht, herrscht in Teilen der Kirche eine Angst vor ''Mammonismus''. Zugleich ist die Kirche bemüht, ihre Rolle als staatstragende Institution zu beweisen, und vermittelt eine wirtschaftsfreundliche Einstellung. Wie entscheiden sich die chinesischen Christen an der Basis in diesem Dilemma? Entspricht ihre Haltung dem offiziellen kirchlichen Selbstverständnis? In einer qualitativen Fallstudie ermittelt die Autorin beispielhaft die Wirtschaftsethiken von Shanghaier Protestanten. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung werden vor dem Hintergrund motivationspsychologischer und modernisierungstheoretischer Ansätze ausgewertet. Dabei zeichnet sich ein höchst komplexes Bild ab: Eine wirtschaftsförderliche Funktion der chinesischen Protestanten ist weniger aufgrund einer ''protestantischen Wirtschaftsethik'' denkbar als vielmehr infolge der Diasporasituation der chinesischen Christen, so das Fazit.

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore how potential exposure to missionary activity impacts both English language proficiency and labor market earnings of male and female immigrants to the United States. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study uses the pooled files of the American Community Survey (2005-09). To estimate the relationship between the missionary activity of both Protestants and Catholics on an immigrant’s English language proficiency using a linear probability model and their labor market earnings using the human capital earnings function that is estimated with an ordinary least squares model. Among other relevant variables, the analysis controls for the colonial heritage of the immigrant’s country of origin. Findings: Overall, and within colonial heritages, our results indicate that male and female immigrants from countries with a higher concentration of Protestant missionaries tend to exhibit higher levels of English language proficiency and earnings, and those from countries with a greater concentration of Catholic missionaries exhibit lower levels of both, compared to countries with lower concentrations of missionaries. Furthermore, a greater proficiency in English enhances earnings. One of the important implications of the findings in this paper is that a “missionary variable” often used in other studies is too aggregate and may mask important findings because of strikingly different effects of Protestant and Catholic activities and characteristics of the missionaries. Originality/value: This study explores for the first time how, through a missionary concentration variable, potential exposure to missionary activity impacts the English language proficiency and earnings of immigrants.
