    En 2010, deux équipes de chercheurs des Universités de Paderborn et du Maine ont confronté leurs perspectives sur ce qui est susceptible de produire l'« identité », la conviction d'une appartenance commune. Par « facteurs », les contributeurs entendent les promoteurs autant que les supports et les références. Loin de projeter dans le passé un modèle européen commun, arbitraire et idéalisé, ils présentent la complexité des processus de cristallisation d'un « nous » - donc d'un « eux » -, variable en fonction du temps et du lieu. Ils privilégient des études de cas dans le champ de la littérature, du droit, de la presse, de l'enseignement ou du culte, sans négliger l'analyse théorique des concepts. Im Oktober 2010 trafen zwei Forschergruppen der Universitäten Le Mans und Paderborn zusammen, um sich über die Frage nach Möglichkeiten der Identitätskonstruktion - der Frage also, was es Menschen ermöglicht, sich als Gemeinschaft zu begreifen - auszutauschen. Unter ,Faktoren' verstehen die Beiträger sowohl Stifter und materielle Träger als auch Bezugsrahmen von Identitätsentwürfen. Ohne der Vergangenheit Europas eine vermeintliche Einheit unterstellen zu wollen, die von vornherein dem Verdacht der Willkür und der Idealisierung ausgesetzt wäre, wollen sie Prozesse der Kristallisierung eines ʻWir' - und damit immer auch eines jeweils ʻAnderen' - im konkreten räumlichen und zeitlichen Kontext und in ihrer Komplexität darstellen. Der Band bevorzugt daher die theoriegeleitete Analyse konkreter Paradigmen aus den Bereichen der Literatur und des Rechts, des Presse- und Unterrichtswesens oder der Religion
