    Notes:

This book explores the ways that scholars, journalists, politicians, and citizens conceive of "the public" or "public life," and how those entities are defined and invented. For decades, scholars have used the metaphors of spheres, systems, webs, or networks to talk about, describe, and map various practices. This volume proposes a new metaphormodalitiesto suggest that publics are forever in flux, and much more fluid and dynamic than the static models of systems or spheres would indicateespecially in the digital age, where various publics rapidly evolve and dissipate

Activists and politicians have long recognized the power of a good story to move people to action. In early 1960 four black college students sat down at a whites-only lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, and refused to leave. Within a month sit-ins spread to thirty cities in seven states. Student participants told stories of impulsive, spontaneous action--this despite all the planning that had gone into the sit-ins. "It was like a fever," they said. Francesca Polletta's It Was Like a Fever sets out to account for the power of storytelling in mobilizing political and social movements

"This study is the first to examine the contribution made by women writers to politically committed literature in 1930s France. Its purpose is to bring to light the work of female authors of left-wing fiction whose novels are comparable to those of well-known male practitioners of litterature engagee, such as Paul Nizan and Louis Aragon. It analyses the work of Madeleine Pelletier, Simone Tery, Edith Thomas, Henriette Valet and Louise Weiss in the context of the inter-war models of committed literature in relation to which they were produced. Consideration of this body of fictional texts, not previously brought together by literary historians, shows how women were able to relate to fiction and to politics in inter-war France. Situating the novels within their social, historical, literary and political environment, the book contributes to the literary and cultural history of twentieth-century France. The analysis of inter-war political writing by women calls into question the criteria against which women's writing has been evaluated by feminist scholarship."--BOOK JACKET

"One of the most famous literary critics of the twentieth century, Edward Said's work has been hugely influential far beyond academia. As a prominent advocate for the Palestinian cause and a noted music critic, Said redefined the role of the public intellectual. In his books, as scholarly as they are readable, he challenged conventional critical demarcations between disciplines. His major opus, Orientalism, is a key text in postcolonial studies that continues to influence as well as challenge scholars in the field. Conor McCarthy introduces the reader to Said's major works and examines how his work and life were intertwined. He explains recurring themes in Said's writings on literature and empire, on intellectuals and literary theory, on music and on the Israel/Palestine conflict. This concise, informative and clearly written introduction for students beginning to study Said is ideally set up to explain the complexities of his work to new audiences"-- Introduction, life, work: beginning with Edward Said: history, biography, criticism -- Influences. Phenomenology -- Philology -- Marxism -- Poststructuralism -- Works. Beginnings: intention and method (1975) -- Orientalism (1978) -- The question of Palestine (1979) -- The world, the text, and the critic (1983) -- Culture and Imperialism (1993) -- Reception.
