    Was bewegt Menschen dazu, sich im Rahmen der Flüchtlingsthematik zu engagieren? Ausgehend von Tätigkeiten für die Unterstützung/Hilfe für Geflüchtete oder für die Begrenzung der Aufnahme von Geflüchteten/Verschärfung der Flüchtlingspolitik befasst sich eine repräsentative Studie mit Motiven, Werten und Zielen von Engagierten. Bei Auseinandersetzungen zur Aufnahme von geflüchteten Menschen sind nicht nur sozialstrukturelle Merkmale und inhaltliche Fragen, sondern auch grundlegende Konfliktlinien um Werthaltungen zu veranschlagen. Eine klare Polarisierung zeigt sich nur an wenigen Stellen. Dennoch sind auch unterschiedliche Prioritäten Ausdruck eigener Lebensmaximen und bieten keine einfachen Rezepte zur Überwindung ideologischer Gräben. Das Buch ist Band 2 zu diesem Forschungsprojekt und bietet den LeserInnen einen spannenden Einblick in Motive, Werte und Zielen der Engagierten. Beide Bände können auch im Paket erworben werden. What are the incentives of people who take part in civic engagement concerning the admission of refugees into their country? Based on activities either to support and help refugees or to limit their admission and intensify refugee policies, this representative study focuses on personal motives, values and goals. It shows that not only do socio-structural characteristics and specific issues have to be considered as explanatory factors, but so do fundamental lines of conflict. Signs of obvious polarisation are rarely found. However, different priorities are just as much expressions of acting on subjective maxims, and therefore there are no simple solutions to bridging ideological divisions. The book is volume 2 of this research project and offers readers an exciting insight into the motives, values and goals of those involved. Both volumes can also be purchased as a package.

    Walter Benjamin hat sein Denken und Schreiben verschiedentlich als Ausdruck von extremen Konstellationen gedeutet. Doch welche konkreten Schreibverfahren resultieren daraus? Die Studie untersucht diese Frage anhand einer einflussreichen intellektuellen Begegnung, die in der Benjamin-Forschung bisher kaum berücksichtigt wurde: Benjamins Rezeption von Salomo Friedlaenders ‚Schöpferische Indifferenz‘. Entlang einer vergleichenden Untersuchung wird gezeigt, wie beide Autoren die Denkfigur der ‚Polarität‘ als zeitdiagnostisches Erkenntnismedium nutzen, um die Krisen, Spannungen und Extreme der Zeit auf ihren Begriff zu bringen. Mit den Untersuchungen von konkreten Einflüssen und intertextuellen Verweisen erschließt die Arbeit einen Knotenpunkt der kleinteiligen intellektuellen Debatten, in denen Benjamins Schriften verortet sind und leistet zugleich einen Beitrag zur Wiederentdeckung des Philosophen und Schriftstellers Salomo Friedlaender.

    Equal access to reliable information is essential for democracy and social cohesion. The rise of information pollution, particularly in digital spaces, poses significant challenges to democratic societies worldwide. While extensive research has focused on its impact in developed, English-speaking democracies, there is a gap in understanding its effects in younger democracies, conflict zones, and less developed contexts. This study fills that gap by analysing Mexico as a case study. Based on interviews with Mexican media professionals, public sector officials, academics and human rights defenders, the study provides insights on the root causes of the problem and and strategies to combat information pollution, safeguard democracy, and promote social cohesion, underscoring the urgency of proactive measures both within Mexico and on a global scale in Mexico, information pollution significantly threatens the country's social cohesion and democratic principles. Structural conditions like poverty, inequality, violence, corruption, and media landscape issues enable societal vulnerability to digital information pollution. Factors directly driving information pollution include the exploitation of digital spaces by drug cartels, divisive narratives against marginalised groups, an increasingly media-hostile environment as well as the incumbent government’s post-factual approach to reality and politics. Information pollution has fostered a polarised discours, contributed to eroding trust in traditional media and amplified identity-based societal cleavages. It weakens the deliberative, participatory and liberal dimensions of democracy dimensions by decreasing the quality of public debate, damaging civil society watchdog roles, and reducing government transparency and accountability. Recommendations for Mexico encompass enhancing public resilience to information through civic education and targeted communication campaigns, empowering media capacity, and fortifying an open data culture in the Mexican public sector. Internationally, efforts should address elite-driven information pollution by reinforcing independent accountability institutions and leveraging diplomatic and economic incentives against leaders attacking these institutions.

Montaignes Weg führt von der Selbstschilderung zur Beschreibung der Umstände und Maßgaben des Menschseins insgesamt. "Was weiß ich?" heißt die Leitfrage eines Philosophierens auf sokratische Weise, inmitten von Menschen und Dingen. Der Essayist findet so zu einer Neubegründung der Skepsis. Veränderung und Vielfalt werden zu Zeichen der Fülle und der Lebendigkeit. Gewissheit des Wissens und restlose Selbsterkenntnis mögen unerreichbar bleiben, nicht aber Loyalität gegenüber der menschlichen Grundverfassung und die Befähigung, das Dasein recht genießen zu können. So gewinnt er Einsichten, die heute, da Polarisierung und Fanatisierung erneut an der Tagesordnung sind, erst recht interessieren müssen.

    Nowadays, immigration is a polarizing topic in politics. In this paper, we investigate how much this political polarization is driven by the depiction narratives made of immigrants vis-a-vis the natives. Furthermore, we look at whether polarization is rooted in private preferences over narratives or in how they are endorsed in public settings and social media. Our empirical strategy consists of a survey experiment in the 2021 German elections and a field experiment on Twitter in which we manipulate the "pinned tweets" of experimental users. To build our narratives, we manipulate either the policy position - hostile toward or accepting migration - or an emphasis on the out-group, on the in-group, or on economic reciprocity. We find that political polarization is driven both by the policy position and emphasis in narratives. On Twitter, the out-group emphasis drives supporters of different parties apart, and the corresponding hostile narrative becomes the only one going viral. In the survey, right-wing participants prefer the reciprocity emphasis more, but we still find evidence of more polarization when allowing the participants to go public.

    Zusammenfassung: Mit der Präsidentschaft Joseph Bidens sind in Deutschland und anderen EU-Staaten hohe Erwartungen an einen "Neustart" der transatlantischen Beziehungen verbunden. Die Handlungsspielräume auch dieses Präsidenten werden allerdings wesentlich mitbestimmt von langfristigen Trends in der US-amerikanischen Innen- und Außenpolitik. Sieben Trends wirken auf die Innen- und Außenpolitik der USA besonders stark ein: die politische Polarisierung; die Verschärfung der sozioökonomischen Ungleichheit; die Transformation der amerikanischen Medienlandschaft; die steigenden Kosten des Klimawandels; der Niedergang des verarbeitenden Gewerbes; die sich zuspitzende Rivalität mit China und die Zunahme der sicherheitspolitischen Anforderungen an die US-Bündnissysteme. Diese Entwicklungen verstärken sich ganz überwiegend gegenseitig. Es gibt kaum Einflüsse, die bewirken würden, dass ein Trend den anderen signifikant abschwächt. Das "System USA" bewegt sich daher stabil in eine Richtung - der Handlungsspielraum des amerikanischen Präsidenten wird sich verengen. Die Revitalisierung der transatlantischen Partnerschaft unter dem Vorzeichen einer konfrontativen Chinapolitik birgt das Risiko, die EU und die europäischen Nato-Partner der USA zu spalten, statt sie zu einen. Impulse für Veränderungen und gesellschaftliches Umdenken in den USA könnten vor allem aus dem wachsenden Problemdruck entstehen. Das gilt beispielsweise mit Blick auf die Kosten des Klimawandels und auf die Gefahren für die amerikanische Demokratie, die mit Desinformation einhergehen. Die deutsche und die europäische Amerikapolitik sollten vor diesem Hintergrund realistische Ambitionen formulieren. Chancen für mehr transatlantische Zusammenarbeit eröffnen sich unter anderem bei der Entwicklung gemeinsamer Normen, Regularien und technischer Standards für den ökonomischen Austausch, nicht zuletzt im Bereich der Digitalwirtschaft, sowie bei gemeinsamen Investitionen

At its extreme in current 'call out' politics, the tendencies of critique - the clear and absolute oppositions between right and wrong, the vilification of those who find themselves on the opposite side than the critic, the tendency to locate such oppositions within identity discourses - have emerged in the Trump era as the vicious, ad hominem, anti-dialogic strategies that mark both the Right and the Left.     Abstract: Starting from the assumption that heroes and heroines do not simply exist, but that they are a product of social construction, the question arises as to the social, and in particular communicative and performative processes in which real or fictional figures are proclaimed heroes, represented as such in various media and become the focus of a community. These processes we subsume under the term ‘heroization’. It is characteristic of heroization processes that in them specific heroic qualities are attributed to the heroized figure, which are justified with reference to an achievement, attitude or heroic deed performed by the hero (at least allegedly). The attribution and communication of heroic deeds or heroic qualities is often encapsulated in a heroic narrative.

    Analytically, different phases of heroization processes can be distinguished: The initial heroic assertion is followed by a phase of positive (especially in the form of admiration and adoration) or negative (rejection and demonisation) resonance within a community. Through cultural practices and discursive settings, the heroization is perpetuated and may eventually end in deheroisation. Heroizations involve various actors, including the hero him or herself, the ‘hero-makers’, the community of the hero’s followers and admirers as well as opponents, and a public that observes the heroization from the outside
