    Der von Peter Koch und Wulf Oesterreicher 1985 erstmals veröffentlichte Ansatz ‚Sprache der Nähe und Sprache der Distanz‘ kann als das erfolgreichste Modell zur Erfassung des Spannungsfelds von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit betrachtet werden. Zum Erfolg gehört dabei einerseits die breite Anwendung insbesondere in der germanistischen Linguistik in verschiedenen Bereichen wie Variationslinguistik, Spracherwerb und Medienlinguistik. Andererseits zählt zum Erfolg des Modells – wie bei allen Klassikern – gerade auch seine anhaltende kritische Diskussion. Der Band reflektiert mit den wissenschaftstheoretischen und -historischen Beiträgen von Wulf Oesterreicher/Peter Koch, Clemens Knobloch, Utz Maas, Helmuth Feilke und Wolfgang Imo die Hintergründe für die Karriere des Nähe-Distanz-Modells und dokumentiert darüber hinaus durch Beiträge von Mathilde Hennig/Joachim Jacob, Roland Kehrein/Hanna Fischer, Sonja Zeman, Doris Tophinke, Christa Dürscheid, Jan Georg Schneider und Matthias Knopp die Anwendung und kritische Diskussion in den Bereichen Variationslinguistik, Sprachgeschichte und Medientheorie The notion of a 'language of immediacy and language of distance' by Peter Koch and Wulf Oesterreicher has been widely applied since its initial publication in 1985, especially in the field of German Linguistics. This edited volume documents the approach's discussion in the areas of Variational Linguistics, Language History and Media Theory.     Scientists have identified southern China as a likely epicenter for viral pandemics, a place where new viruses emerge out of intensively farmed landscapes and human--animal interactions. In Virulent Zones, Lyle Fearnley documents the global plans to stop the next influenza pandemic at its source, accompanying virologists and veterinarians as they track lethal viruses to China's largest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake. Revealing how scientific research and expert agency operate outside the laboratory, he shows that the search for origins is less a linear process of discovery than a constant displacement toward new questions about cause and context. As scientists strive to understand the environments from which the influenza virus emerges, the unexpected scale of duck farming systems and unusual practices such as breeding wild geese unsettle research objects, push scientific inquiry in new directions, and throw expert authority into question. Drawing on fieldwork with global health scientists, state-employed veterinarians, and poultry farmers in Beijing and at Poyang Lake, Fearnley situates the production of ecological facts about disease emergence inside the shifting cultural landscapes of agrarian change and the geopolitics of global health.

    Mitte der 1960er Jahre hat Michel Foucault die Methode der „Diskursanalyse“ in die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften eingeführt. Besonders in der Archäologie des Wissens hat er dafür plädiert, die Geschichte des Wissens und der Wissenschaften zum Gegenstand diskursanalytischer Untersuchungen zu machen. Über ein halbes Jahrhundert später ist im Bereich der Informatik ein zunehmendes Interesse an der Diskursanalyse zu verzeichnen. In der Regel spielt Foucault dabei aber keine Rolle. Fern von jeder Archäologie setzen auch die Digital Humanities vermehrt auf die Analyse von historischen und gegenwärtigen Diskursen. Angesichts dieser Konjunkturen ist es an der Zeit, die Archäologie des Wissens neu zu lesen. Denn schon 1968 behauptete der französische Historiker Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie „Der zukünftige Historiker wird Programmierer sein, oder er wird nicht sein.“ Ein Jahr später gibt Foucault mit seinem Buch auf eben diese Herausforderung eine ebenso informierte wie nuancierte Antwort. Diese Antwort ist in ihrer Aktualität und Relevanz erst noch zu entdecken.

    The literary arts represent and provoke experiences of understanding and emotion, and this open access study examines how the practical pursuit of well-being in healthcare reveals purposes at the core of our engagements with and understanding of literature itself. During the past twenty years, much admirable work in the “health humanities” has focused upon what studies of literature contribute to the understandings and the practical work—the “worldly work”—of healthcare. Such a project aims at developing healthcare practitioners who bring greater care to those who come to them ailing or in fear or faced with terrible suffering. Literary Studies and Well-Being turns this inside out by examining the intergenerational caretaking of healthcare in a manner which allows us to comprehend the nature and discipline of literary studies in new ways.     As smartphones mediate more of our activities, they are changing our relationship with meaning. To a teenager, for example a “conversation” is just as likely to refer to an exchange of text messages as it is a face-to-face discussion. Meanwhile, Facebook has redefined what friendship means, Snapchat what a memory means, etc. The kinds of changes smartphones bring are happening at rapid pace: TikTok reached a billion users in just over three years, whereas it took the telephone 75 years to reach a tenth of that number of people. Meaningful Technologies: How Digital Metaphors Change the Way We Think and Live by Eric Chown and Fernando Nascimento offers systematic reconsideration of the ways in which digital technologies impact our lives both individually and collectively. Metaphors aren’t just a clever way to describe technology, they are also changing the way we think. When we click on a picture of a shopping cart it connects a complex set of technologies to represent a simple idea that we’re all familiar with. A heart icon under a photo is understood as an easy way to express appreciation. We aren’t required to understand how technology works, just how we interact with it. The ambiguity of metaphors, and the complexity of technology can also hide important realities about what is being described. “The cloud,” for example, actually consists of very real data centers, which consume huge amounts of natural resources to keep running. Meanwhile, pressing that heart icon on a photo is a signal to the artificial intelligences running in your app that you want to see more things like that photo and that it should adjust what it knows about you accordingly. There is a constant feedback loop between us and the digital technologies we use. We are constantly using them and they are changing us through their usage. Meaningful Technologies focuses on this loop from the perspectives of hermeneutic philosophy and cognitive science. Through the former, the authors examine meaning and how it changes over time. Through the latter, they gain understanding of how this feedback loop impacts individuals, especially in terms of learning and attention. Chown and Nascimento argue that, on the one hand, apps have a kind of agency never before possible in a technology, but also that, armed with a critical framework for examining such apps, we can regain some of our own agency. This book will appeal to scholars of digital media digital and computational studies, and those interested in issues related to ethical impacts of digital technologies.

Werner Kogge entfaltet demgegenüber einen neuen Ansatz: Er zeichnet nach, wie sich aus mehreren historischen Quellen verschiedene Typen wissenschaftlicher Forschung ausprägten, und wie diese Typen heute praktiziert werden. So entsteht ein Bild unterschiedlicher, aber gleichberechtigter Formen wissenschaftlicher Forschungspraxis, ohne hierarchische Staffelung oder eine evolutionäre Entwicklungslinie. Mit dieser Pluralität kommt auch eine neue Form von Interdisziplinarität in den Blick: strukturell, modular und praxisbezogen.

    Der von Peter Koch und Wulf Oesterreicher 1985 erstmals veröffentlichte Ansatz ‚Sprache der Nähe und Sprache der Distanz‘ kann als das erfolgreichste Modell zur Erfassung des Spannungsfelds von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit betrachtet werden. Zum Erfolg gehört dabei einerseits die breite Anwendung insbesondere in der germanistischen Linguistik in verschiedenen Bereichen wie Variationslinguistik, Spracherwerb und Medienlinguistik. Andererseits zählt zum Erfolg des Modells – wie bei allen Klassikern – gerade auch seine anhaltende kritische Diskussion.     Mitte der 1960er Jahre hat Michel Foucault die Methode der „Diskursanalyse“ in die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften eingeführt. Besonders in der Archäologie des Wissens hat er dafür plädiert, die Geschichte des Wissens und der Wissenschaften zum Gegenstand diskursanalytischer Untersuchungen zu machen. Über ein halbes Jahrhundert später ist im Bereich der Informatik ein zunehmendes Interesse an der Diskursanalyse zu verzeichnen. In der Regel spielt Foucault dabei aber keine Rolle. Fern von jeder Archäologie setzen auch die Digital Humanities vermehrt auf die Analyse von historischen und gegenwärtigen Diskursen. Angesichts dieser Konjunkturen ist es an der Zeit, die Archäologie des Wissens neu zu lesen. Denn schon 1968 behauptete der französische Historiker Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie „Der zukünftige Historiker wird Programmierer sein, oder er wird nicht sein.“ Ein Jahr später gibt Foucault mit seinem Buch auf eben diese Herausforderung eine ebenso informierte wie nuancierte Antwort.
