The Weimar origins of political theory is a widespread and powerful narrative, but this singular focus leaves out another intellectual history that historian David L. Marshall works to reveal: the Weimar origins of rhetorical inquiry. Marshall focuses his attention on Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, and Aby Warburg, revealing how these influential thinkers inflected and transformed problems originally set out by Max Weber, Carl Schmitt, Theodor Adorno, Hans Baron, and Leo Strauss. He contends that we miss major opportunities if we do not attend to the rhetorical aspects of their thought, and his aim, in the end, is to lay out an intellectual history that can become a zone of theoretical experimentation in para-democratic times.

"In 1760, the French playwright Charles Palissot de Montenoy wrote Les Philosophes - a scandalous farcical comedy about a group of opportunistic self-styled philosophers. Les Philosophes emerged in the charged historical context of the pamphlet wars surrounding the publication of Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie, and delivered an oblique but acerbic criticism of the intellectuals of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, including the likes of Diderot and Rousseau. This book presents the first high-quality English translation of the play, including critical apparatus. The translation is based on Olivier Ferret's edition, and renders the text into iambic pentameter to preserve the character of the original. Adaptations are further provided of Ferret's introduction and notes. This masterful and highly accessible translation of Les Philosophes opens up this polemical text to a non-specialist audience. It will be a valuable resource to non-Francophone scholars and students working on the philosophical exchanges of the Enlightenment. Moreover, this translation - the result of a year-long project undertaken by Jessica Goodman with six of her undergraduate French students - expounds the value of collaboration between scholar and student, and, as such, provides a model for other language tutors embarking on translation projects with their students."--Publisher's website.

A Text Worthy of Plotinus' makes available for the first time information on the collaborative work that went into the completion of the first reliable edition of Plotinus? 'Enneads: Plotini Opera, editio maior', three volumes (Brussels, Paris, and Leiden, 1951-1973), followed by the 'editio minor', three volumes (Oxford, 1964-1983). Pride of place is given to the correspondence of the editors, Paul Henry S.J. and Hans-Rudolf Schwyzer, with other prominent scholars of late antiquity, amongst whom are E.R. Dodds, B.S. Page, A.H. Armstrong, and J. Igal S.J. Also included in the volume are related documents consisting in personal memoirs, course handouts and extensive biographical notices of the two editors as well as of those other scholars who contributed to fostering the revival of Plotinus in the latter half of the 20th century. Taken together, letters and documents let the reader into the problems ? codicological, exegetical, and philosophical ? that are involved in the interpretation of medieval manuscripts and their transcription for modern readers. Additional insights are provided into the nature of collaborative work involving scholars from different countries and traditions.0'A Text Worthy of Plotinus' will prove a crucial archive for generations of scholars. Those interested in the philosophy of Plotinus will find it a fount of information on his style, manner of exposition, and handling of sources. The volume will also appeal to readers interested in broader trends in 20th century scholarship in the fields of Classics, History of Ideas, Theology, and Religion.

The main aim of this study is the transmission of the image of the "naked philosophers" (gymnosophistai), identified with the Brahmans, from Hellenistic authors to late antiquity. The earlier descriptions have the double purpose of, on the one hand, defining the cultural distance separating the gymnosophists from what the classical world was, or felt to be; and on the other hand, of idealizing Indian wisdom, according to an entirely intellectual Greek model. Moreover, gymnosophists appear in the Alexander Romance, where they meet the Macedonian king, as emblems of a utopian community living in the state of nature. In a group of Christian texts from late antiquity, known as the "Indian treatises", we find descriptions of Alexander's encounter with the Brahman philosopher Dandamis/Dindimus. The latter is represented in a positive light as a symbol of "renunciation of the world". Finally, in some writings by the Church Fathers, though the nudity of the Indian sages is either justified or glossed over, the wise men still embody the cultural pattern of inclusion/exclusion of otherness previously elaborated by Greek thought. The trouble with Bentham -- Aesthetics of pleasure, ethics of happiness -- Against rights -- Bentham's queer Christ -- Politics and poetics of liberty. "In his extensive private manuscripts, Jeremy Bentham used same-sex male intimacy as a philosophical test-case for the full political and social enfranchisement of women, colonized and enslaved persons, and sexual nonconformists. Bentham argued that oppression in law, philosophy, religion, and literature were all based on aesthetic hierarchies that refused to acknowledge differences of taste in sensory pleasure, including sexual pleasure. In Uncommon Sense, Carrie Shanafelt reads Bentham's sexual nonconformity papers as an argument for the toleration of aesthetic difference as the foundation for egalitarian liberty. Shanafelt challenges the common image of Bentham as a dehumanizing calculator or an eccentric projector, instead showing Bentham at his most intimate, outraged by injustice and desperate for the end of discriminatory violence"--
