    Welche christologischen und soteriologischen Vorstellungen wurden im Neuen Testament mit der Bezeichnung Jesu als Opfer und der Rede von Sühne vermittelt? Weit verbreitet ist derzeit die Auffassung, es gehe um Jesu stellvertretenden Sühnetod. Diese Motive bereiten heutzutage nicht nur Verständnisprobleme. Viele finden sie anstößig, da sich mit ihnen problematische Vorstellungen wie gewaltsame Tötung und das Bild eines strafenden Gottes zu verbinden scheinen. Christian A. Eberhart untersucht mittels detaillierter traditionsgeschichtlicher Studien kultische Metaphern und Redewendungen des Neuen Testaments vor dem Hintergrund alttestamentlicher und frühjüdischer Texte zu Opferritualen. Er zeigt unter anderem, dass sich das Opfermotiv im Neuen Testament nicht allein auf Jesu Tod, sondern auch auf dessen Leben und gesamte Mission bezieht. Außerdem ist kultische Sühne durch die Vorstellung eines stellvertretenden Todes nicht angemessen beschrieben; sie assoziiert vielmehr ein Heilsgeschehen auf der konzeptionellen Grundlage kultischer Reinigung und Weihe. What are the Christological and soteriological contents of the metaphor of the sacrifice of Jesus and the concept of atonement in the New Testament? Do they communicate the vicarious death of Jesus, as many suggest today? These metaphors and concepts, however, are not only difficult to comprehend; they are often considered offensive due to alleged implications such as violent killing and the image of a vengeful God. Christian A. Eberhart tackles this problem in his careful and detailed study of cult metaphors and concepts in the context of New Testament Christology. By relating them to Old Testament and early Jewish traditions of sacrificial rituals, he shows that the metaphor of the sacrifice of Jesus does not necessarily convey the violent death of Jesus, but his entire mission and life. Nor is the cultic concept of atonement based on vicarious killing; it expresses salvation through purification and consecration.

Weit verbreitet ist derzeit die Auffassung, es gehe um Jesu stellvertretenden Sühnetod. Diese Motive bereiten heutzutage nicht nur Verständnisprobleme. Viele finden sie anstößig, da sich mit ihnen problematische Vorstellungen wie gewaltsame Tötung und das Bild eines strafenden Gottes zu verbinden scheinen. Christian A. Eberhart untersucht mittels detaillierter traditionsgeschichtlicher Studien kultische Metaphern und Redewendungen des Neuen Testaments vor dem Hintergrund alttestamentlicher und frühjüdischer Texte zu Opferritualen. Er zeigt unter anderem, dass sich das Opfermotiv im Neuen Testament nicht allein auf Jesu Tod, sondern auch auf dessen Leben und gesamte Mission bezieht. Außerdem ist kultische Sühne durch die Vorstellung eines stellvertretenden Todes nicht angemessen beschrieben; sie assoziiert vielmehr ein Heilsgeschehen auf der konzeptionellen Grundlage kultischer Reinigung und Weihe.

    In a series of studies published beginning in the 1950's, E.S.Rosenthal divided the manuscripts of b.Pesaḥim into two distinct groups, which represent an early split in the transmission of the Talmud: the "vulgata" group, consisting of the majority of witnesses (including the printed editions), and the lishna aharina or "alternative version," which he claimed was represented primarily by two manuscripts from Yemen (JTS Enelow 271 and Columbia x893). The present study offers an alternative model: the two textual traditions are represented in their purest forms by MS Vatican 125 and MS Munich 6, respectively. The Yemenite manuscript tradition of Pesaḥim, by contrast, is a later development. The vast majority of the unique readings in the Yemenite manuscripts are attested only in Yemen; if these truly represented a Babylonian tradition we would expect to find confirmation of more of these readings in European manuscripts. Furthermore, the Yemenite variation is almost always an addition to the basic text found in other manuscripts (in one case more than one hundred words are added!). Numerous Yemenite glosses cite parallel sources and commentaries, including those of Rashi, the ʿArukh, and Rabbenu Ḥananel. Moreover, even in those cases in which the Yemenite reading is parallel to the more common reading, rather than a gloss, the Yemenite version is demonstrably more developed: it addresses a textual problem found in the more common reading, reacts to parallel sources, or adjusts the text so that it conforms with opinions of classical commentators.
