    Visitors to the Arctic enter places that have been traditionally imagined as otherworldly. This strangeness fascinated audiences in nineteenth-century Britain when the idea of the heroic explorer voyaging through unmapped zones reached its zenith. The Spectral Arctic re-thinks our understanding of Arctic exploration by paying attention to the importance of dreams and ghosts in the quest for the Northwest Passage. The narratives of Arctic exploration that we are all familiar with today are just the tip of the iceberg: they disguise a great mass of mysterious and dimly lit stories beneath the surface. In contrast to oft-told tales of heroism and disaster, this book reveals the hidden stories of dreaming and haunted explorers, of frozen mummies, of rescue balloons, visits to Inuit shamans, and of the entranced female clairvoyants who travelled to the Arctic in search of John Franklin’s lost expedition. Through new readings of archival documents, exploration narratives, and fictional texts, these spectral stories reflect the complex ways that men and women actually thought about the far North in the past. This revisionist historical account allows us to make sense of current cultural and political concerns in the Canadian Arctic about the location of Franklin’s ships.

    This volume encompasses a broad span of issues related to borders as areas of intense activity substantially contributing to the dynamics of culture. The chapters address questions relating to the construction and reconstruction of borders, as well as the experience and representation of physical, spiritual, imagined and symbolic borders. The authors provide perspectives on emerging and dissolving borders in the past and present. Special emphasis is placed on subjective perception by asking how borders are experienced and expressed at the level of the specific community or individual. Several articles tackle dramatic and controversial issues like war, conflict between different ideologies and cultures, and remembering. The authors also explore dialectical relations between culture, social relations and landscape, and the interplay of ideological constructions and material culture. The contributions are arranged into two sections focusing on two wider issues: how borders are drawn in landscape, religion and scientific discourse (Wandering borders), and how representations of cultural borders and border crossings have changed over time (Bordering ruptures: the dynamics of self-description). The authors of this volume come from various scholarly fields and offer innovative tools for expanding the concept of the border across disciplinary frames.

    This is a study in oral poetic composition. It examines how oral poets compose their recitations. Specifically, it is a study of the recitations of 17 separate master poets from the Island of Rote recorded over a period of 50 years. Each of these poets offers his version of what is culturally considered to be the ‘same’ ritual chant. These compositions are examined in detail and their oral formulae are carefully compared to one another. Professor James J. Fox is an anthropologist who carried out his doctoral field research on the Island of Rote in eastern Indonesia in 1965–66. In 1965, he began recording the oral traditions of the island and developed a close association with numerous oral poets on the island. After many subsequent visits, in 2006, he began a nine-year project that brought groups of oral poets to Bali for week-long recording sessions. Recitations gathered over a period of 50 years are the basis for this book.

    This book is rooted in the author’s experience as an interviewer and researcher in the Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project – the biggest European oral history project devoted to a single Nazi concentration camp system, realized in the years 2002/2003 at the University of Vienna. Over 850 Mauthausen survivors have been recorded worldwide, more than 160 of them in Poland, and over 30 by the author. The work offers an in-depth analysis of Polish survivors’ accounts, sensitive to both, form and content of these stories, as well as their social and cultural framing. The analysis is accompanied by an interpretation of (Polish) camp experiences in a broader biographical and historical perspective. The book is an interpretive journey from camp experiences, through the survivors’ memories, to narratives recalling them − and backwards.

    Yodel and Yodel-Song in the Lower Austrian / Styrian Wechsel region from the beginning of the 19th century, completed with local research 2001–2019 (especially Schwaigen-Reigen® 2007–2009 – traditional music in 18 alpine huts at the beginning of the alpine pasture in June) and references to other sources.

    Landscape and social structure of the Lower Austrian / Styrian Wechsel-region: once turnstile of the Austro-Hungarian member-states, today centre of the European Union.

    For the first time a conscious differentiation between measures in triple metre (3/4) and duple metre (2/4) both with yodels and yodel-songs, thus showing its stylistic influence. This axiom has not ben applied as a musical standard in the academic approach of traditional music so far.

    Der Welt-Museumsverband International Council of Museums wurde 1946 als Antwort auf die Gräuel des Zweiten Weltkriegs gegründet. ICOM versteht sich als Brückenbauer, Think Tank und Netzwerk der Museumsfachleute und Museen. 75 Jahre nach Gründung ist es Zeit für eine Rückschau: Zeitzeugen-Interviews mit den noch lebenden Präsidenten von ICOM Deutschland und dem letzten ICOM-Präsidenten der DDR geben Auskunft darüber, welchen kulturpolitischen Herausforderungen der Verband sich gegenübersah, wie und ob diese bewältigt werden konnten. Tanja Bechtel hat es übernommen, leitfadengestützt im Sinne der Oral History und der Methodik von Experten-Interviews diese Zeitzeugen-Gespräche durchzuführen und in einem Bericht für ICOM Deutschland zu dokumentieren. Das Ergebnis ist ein Resümee langjähriger Verbandsarbeit im Kultursektor und eine Konfrontation mit zurückliegenden, aber auch mit aktuellen, zum Teil globalen Herausforderungen.

    Abstract: Die Forschungsarbeit untersucht semiotische Form und Funktion poly- phoner und polykinetischer Äußerungen im Sprechen von Angesicht zu Angesicht. Die Studie identifiziert Äußerungen, in denen eine Über- lagerung von Stimmen bzw. von Körpern (layering of voices/ layering of bodies) stattfindet. Die empirische Grundlage für die Analysen bilden drei Kollektionen (insgesamt ca. 24 Stunden Videomaterial), in denen Gesprächsbeteiligte ihre Stimme in ganz unterschiedlichen Kontexten einer narrativen Figur geben und körperlich die Ausdrucksgestalt dieser Figur darstellen.

    Die Forschungsergebnisse in den einzelnen Analysekapiteln heben hervor, dass es sich beim Untersuchungsgegenstand um ein höchst dialogisches Verfahren handelt, mit dem Gesprächsbeteiligte lokale kommunikative Aufgaben nicht nur mittels syntaktischer und phonetisch-prosodischer cues bewältigen, sondern auch mithilfe körperlicher Äußerungen. Die Arbeit zeichnet nach, dass die gesprächsbeteiligten Personen sich an körperlichen Ausdrücken des Gegenübers in der laufenden Interaktion orientieren und sich dadurch wechselseitig zu- und aufeinander beziehen.

    In der Emergenz der jeweiligen körperlichen interaktional herausge- arbeiteten und angepassten Ausdrucksgestalt zeigt sich die Rolle des erzählenden Körpers für das Wie und das Was des Sprechens von Angesicht zu Angesicht: Indem über den körperlichen Ausdruck wesentliche Teilerzählungen erbracht werden, tragen semiotische Formen der polyphonen und polykinetischen Äußerungen zur lokalen Sinn- herstellung bei
