    This volume encompasses a broad span of issues related to borders as areas of intense activity substantially contributing to the dynamics of culture. The chapters address questions relating to the construction and reconstruction of borders, as well as the experience and representation of physical, spiritual, imagined and symbolic borders. The authors provide perspectives on emerging and dissolving borders in the past and present. Special emphasis is placed on subjective perception by asking how borders are experienced and expressed at the level of the specific community or individual. Several articles tackle dramatic and controversial issues like war, conflict between different ideologies and cultures, and remembering. The authors also explore dialectical relations between culture, social relations and landscape, and the interplay of ideological constructions and material culture. The contributions are arranged into two sections focusing on two wider issues: how borders are drawn in landscape, religion and scientific discourse (Wandering borders), and how representations of cultural borders and border crossings have changed over time (Bordering ruptures: the dynamics of self-description). The authors of this volume come from various scholarly fields and offer innovative tools for expanding the concept of the border across disciplinary frames.

    This is a study in oral poetic composition. It examines how oral poets compose their recitations. Specifically, it is a study of the recitations of 17 separate master poets from the Island of Rote recorded over a period of 50 years. Each of these poets offers his version of what is culturally considered to be the ‘same’ ritual chant. These compositions are examined in detail and their oral formulae are carefully compared to one another. Professor James J. Fox is an anthropologist who carried out his doctoral field research on the Island of Rote in eastern Indonesia in 1965–66. In 1965, he began recording the oral traditions of the island and developed a close association with numerous oral poets on the island. After many subsequent visits, in 2006, he began a nine-year project that brought groups of oral poets to Bali for week-long recording sessions. Recitations gathered over a period of 50 years are the basis for this book.

    Die Gattung der so genannten Survivor Testimonies von Überlebenden der Shoah, wie sie mittlerweile zu zehntausenden in den Videoarchiven weltweit vorliegen, ist der zentrale Gegenstand dieses Buches. Als videographierte Artefakte bewahren solche Zeugnisse genozidaler Erfahrungen die direkte Rede der Zeugen und stellen den dezidiert subjektiven Charakter der Berichte in den Vordergrund, indem sich die Aufnahmen vornehmlich an die menschliche Stimme und das Antlitz halten. Das Zeugnis und insbesondere das Videozeugnis dokumentiert in diesem Sinne "die lebendige Erfahrung der im Prozess des Geschichte Machens zugefügten Verletzung" (Paul Ricœur). Die "lebendige Erfahrung" ist jedoch nicht auf die Zeugen beschränkt, sondern bezieht als ein kommunikativer Akt die historisch abständigen Rezipienten als sekundäre Zeugen mit ein. Das Zeugnisablegen stellt mithin eine dialogische Kommunikation dar, die abhängig vom historischen Index der jeweils rezipierenden Person erneut beginnt und Antworten auf die Widerfahrnisse einer gewaltsamen Geschichte fordert. Die Komplexität des Phänomens videographierter Zeugenschaft in seinen ethischen wie methodischen Dimensionen analysieren die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes aus den Perspektiven der Geschichts- und Literaturwissenschaft, der Philosophie und der Psychoanalyse. Die Aufsätze fokussieren sowohl anhand konkreter Einzelanalysen als auch theoretisch weit gehender Reflexionen die spezifischen Aspekte der Zeitlichkeit, die leiblichen, sprachlichen und medialen Dimensionen, die im Videozeugnis zu Tage treten sowie verschiedene Modi des kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Umgangs mit diesen Artefakten.
