"'When I mention having studied "Troubles fiction" while in prison, that is, prose fiction dealing with the conflict in the North of Ireland since the late 1960s, I often meet with polite silence...'" "This is how Patrick Magee begins his fascinating study of the strange world of novels about the conflict in Ireland. Beginning while he was interned in Long Kesh in 1974, he worked his way through hundreds of the 700 works of fiction produced to date. No one is better placed to introduce the reader to the 'Provo godfathers', 'psychopaths', and 'romantic nationalists with a death wish' who inhabit this fictional universe. And no one is better placed to critically assess these representations of republicans than an active republican like Patrick Magee." "The popularity of 'Troubles fiction' lies in the genre's success in performing a key ideological and political function for the British reading public, argues the author. The fiction often serves to denigrate the enemy, idealise 'our side' and over-simplify the reasons for political conflict. In this way it has played a crucial role in the propaganda war over the last three decades. As a consequence, there has been little insight provided into the real world of Irish republicans. As the author puts it, 'to read these works uncritically is to accept at face value many assumptions that continue to hinder a resolution of the divisions of Ireland'. His task therefore is to read the fiction critically."--BOOK JACKET.

Since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 - the formal end-point of the thirty-year modern 'Troubles' - contemporary visual artists have offered diverse responses to post-conflict circumstances in Northern Ireland. In Ghost-Haunted Land - the first book-length examination of post-Troubles contemporary art - Declan Long highlights artists who have reflected on the ongoing anxieties of aftermath. This wide-ranging study addresses developments in video, photography, painting, sculpture, performance and more, offering detailed analyses of key works by artists based in Ireland and beyond - including 2014 Turner Prize winner Duncan Campbell and internationally acclaimed filmmaker and photographer Willie Doherty. 'Post-Troubles' contemporary art is discussed in the context of both local transformations and global operations - and many of the main points of reference in the book come from broader debates about the place and purpose of contemporary art in today's world

Based on the acclaimed RTE documentary, 'Shooting the Darkness', this landmark book presents the stories of leading photographers - Alan Lewis, Paul Faith, Martin Nangle, Stanley Matchett, Trevor Dickson, Hugh Russell and Crispin Rodwell - whose images captured some of the most important events of the Troubles. They talk, many of them for the first time, about the photographs they took - how they got the shot; what it cost them to take the photograph; and reflect on whether it was worth it. More broadly, they talk about what it was like to be a photographer during the Troubles: how the paramilitary groups dealt with them, the ethical dilemmas they faced, and the emotional fallout they experienced. The book includes the stories behind iconic images such as Bishop Edward Daly waving a blood-stained handkerchief on Bloody Sunday, Sean Downes being shot and killed by an RUC plastic bullet in Andersonstown in 1984, and the brutal attack of corporals Derek Wood and David Howes in March 1988

""Meticulously reported, exquisitely written, and grippingly told, Say Nothing is a work of revelation." ...David Grann, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon From award-winning New Yorker staff writer Patrick Radden Keefe, a stunning, intricate narrative about a notorious killing in Northern Ireland and its devastating repercussions In December 1972, Jean McConville, a thirty-eight-year-old mother of ten, was dragged from her Belfast home by masked intruders, her children clinging to her legs. They never saw her again. Her abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress...with so many kids, McConville always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes. Patrick Radden Keefe's mesmerizing book on the bitter conflict in Northern Ireland and its aftermath uses the McConville case as a starting point for the tale of a society wracked by a violent guerrilla war, a war whose consequences have never been reckoned with. The brutal violence seared not only people like the McConville children, but also I.R.A. members embittered by a peace that fell far short of the goal of a united Ireland, and left them wondering whether the killings they committed were not justified acts of war, but simple murders. From radical and impetuous I.R.A. terrorists...or volunteers, depending on which side one was on...such as Dolours Price, who, when she was barely out of her teens, was already planting bombs in London and targeting informers for execution, to the ferocious I.R.A. mastermind known as The Dark, to the spy games and dirty schemes of the British Army, to Gerry Adams, who negotiated the peace and denied his I.R.A. past, betraying his hardcore comrades...Say Nothing conjures a world of passion, betrayal, vengeance, and anguish"...

Recent years have seen the topic of victims and victimhood brought to the fore on the island of Ireland, both in the North with the publication of the controversial Eames/Bradley report dealing with victims of the Troubles, and in the Republic with the publication of the final Ryan Report on institutional abuse. In this collection, drawing on the cross-disciplinary nature of Irish studies, contributors from the fields of history, literary and cultural studies, politics, sociology and civic society provide multifaceted perspectives from which to examine the issue of victimhood in Ireland. The volume explores in detail how a traumatic past, whether repressed or proclaimed, can continue to impact on the present, both at a personal and societal level
