The correct interpretation of Multiword Units (MWUs) is crucial to many applications in Natural Language Processing but is a challenging and complex task. In recent years, the computational treatment of MWUs has received considerable attention but there is much more to be done before we can claim that NLP and Machine Translation (MT) systems process MWUs successfully. This volume provides a general overview of the field with particular reference to Machine Translation and Translation Technology and focuses on languages such as English, Basque, French, Romanian, German, Dutch and Croatian, among others. The chapters of the volume illustrate a variety of topics that address this challenge, such as the use of rule-based approaches, compound splitting techniques, MWU identification methodologies in multilingual applications, and MWU alignment issues.

"This book explains the concept, framework, implementation, and evaluation of controlled document authoring in this age of translation technologies. Machine translation (MT) is routinely used in many situations, by companies, governments and individuals. Despite recent advances, MT tools are still known to be imperfect, sometimes producing critical errors. To enhance the performance of MT, researchers and language practitioners have developed controlled languages that impose restrictions on the form or length of the source language text. However, a fundamental, persisting problem is that both current MT systems and controlled languages deal only with the sentence as the unit of processing. To be effective, controlled languages must be contextualised at the document level, consequently enabling MT to generate outputs appropriate for their functional context within the target document. With a specific focus on Japanese municipal documents, this book establishes a framework for controlled document authoring by integrating various research strands including document formalisation, controlled language, and terminology management. It then presents the development and evaluation of an authoring support system, MuTUAL, that is designed to help non-professional writers create well-organised documents that are both readable and translatable. The book provides useful insights for researchers and practitioners interested in translation technology, technical writing, and natural language processing applications"--

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post proceedings of two international workshops on special aspects of digital libraries, namely the First International Workshop on Natural Language Processing for Digital Libraries, NLP4DL 2009, held in Viareggio, Italy in June 2009 and the CACAO Project Workshop Advanced Technologies for Digital Libraries, AT4DL 2009, held in Trento, Italy in September 2009. A new open call was sent after the workshops. The revised full papers presented at the workshops and the newly submitted ones went through two rounds of reviewing and revision. The 10 papers selected address various aspects of NLP in digital libraries, search, classification, and digital document processing.

This book describes a complete translation system for spontaneously spoken language, constructed using the incremental paradigm. It starts by presenting the theoretical and algorithmic basis necessary to cope with the complex endeavour of translating speech incrementally and in parallel. In particular, graph-theoretic foundations of natural language processing and feature-based descriptions of linguistic objects are covered. A thorough description of the system and its performance follows. The author covers syntactic and semantic processing as well as transfer and syntactic generation. Thus the book can also be used as a broad-coverage introduction to the field of speech translation. This book is essential reading for researchers and students working in the field of speech translation. It is also intended as a research tool for those interested in the architecture of general natural language processing systems

"In everyday communication, Europe's citizens, business partners and politicians are inevitably confronted with language barriers. Language technology has the potential to overcome these barriers and to provide innovative interfaces to technologies and knowledge. This white paper presents the state of language technology support for the Latvian language. It is part of a series that analyses the available language resources and technologies for 30 European languages. The analysis was carried out by MEDTA-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission. META-NET consists of 54 research centres in 33 countries, who cooperate with stakeholders from economy, government agencies, research organisations, non-governmental organisations, language communities and European universities. META-NET's vision is high-quality language technology for all European languages"--Page 4 of cover
