    Main description: This monograph sets out to establish a theoretical framework for the study of childhood linguistic acquisition processes in multilingual contexts, taking account both of natural and guided processes. One of the aims is to identify causes for defective acquisition processes in both first and second languages observable in children from a migrant background. A further objective is to proceed from there to develop a design for use in institutional contexts providing children growing up in multilingual environments with support in linguistic acquisition processes

    Die Monographie erarbeitet einen theoretischen Rahmen für die Untersuchung sprachlicher Aneignungsprozesse im Kindesalter in mehrsprachigen Kontexten, der sowohl natürliche als auch gesteuerte Prozesse berücksichtigt. Die Grundannahme der Studie besteht darin, daß sich eine solche Zielsetzung nur auf der Basis interdisziplinärer Arbeit realisieren läßt, die neben linguistischer Forschung, sprachdidaktische und unterrichtswissenschaftliche Forschung einbezieht. In Kapitel 1 wird die Fragestellung aus einer Forschungsperspektive betrachtet, die sprachliche Aneignungsprozesse beim Erwerb grammatischen Wissens im Kindesalter als selektive Interaktion mit der Umwelt auf der Basis von innate constraints modelliert. Kapitel 2 geht davon aus, daß die Regeln eines Kenntnissystems, also auch die Regeln des sprachlichen Kenntnissystems auch durch Konventionen und Traditionen bestimmt sind. Kapitel 3 fragt schließlich nach Möglichkeiten und Grenzen steuernder Eingriffe in natürliche Erwerbsprozesse in institutionellen Kontexten. Ein Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, Ursachen für unvollständige Erwerbsprozesse in der Erstsprache und in der Zweitsprache bei Kindern mit Migrationshintergrund herauszuarbeiten.     Die Monographie erarbeitet einen theoretischen Rahmen für die Untersuchung sprachlicher Aneignungsprozesse im Kindesalter in mehrsprachigen Kontexten, der sowohl natürliche als auch gesteuerte Prozesse berücksichtigt. Die Grundannahme der Studie besteht darin, daß sich eine solche Zielsetzung nur auf der Basis interdisziplinärer Arbeit realisieren läßt, die neben linguistischer Forschung, sprachdidaktische und unterrichtswissenschaftliche Forschung einbezieht. In Kapitel 1 wird die Fragestellung aus einer Forschungsperspektive betrachtet, die sprachliche Aneignungsprozesse beim Erwerb grammatischen Wissens im Kindesalter als selektive Interaktion mit der Umwelt auf der Basis von innate constraints modelliert. Kapitel 2 geht davon aus, daß die Regeln eines Kenntnissystems, also auch die Regeln des sprachlichen Kenntnissystems auch durch Konventionen und Traditionen bestimmt sind. Kapitel 3 fragt schließlich nach Möglichkeiten und Grenzen steuernder Eingriffe in natürliche Erwerbsprozesse in institutionellen Kontexten. Ein Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, Ursachen für unvollständige Erwerbsprozesse in der Erstsprache und in der Zweitsprache bei Kindern mit Migrationshintergrund herauszuarbeiten. Ein weiteres Ziel der Untersuchung ist, vor diesem Hintergrund eine Konzeption für die Unterstützung sprachlicher Aneignungsprozesse in institutionellen Kontexten bei mehrsprachig aufwachsenden Kindern zu entwickeln

Based on a unique survey of parents in trilingual families in two European countries, the book highlights the challenges that trilingual families face when living in mainly monolingual societies. It tells the story of two parents from different cultural, linguistic, and ethnic-racial backgrounds who joined to raise their two children with their heritage languages outside their native countries. It also tells the children’s story and the way they negotiated three cultures and languages and developed a trilingual identity. It sheds light on how parental support contributed to the children’s simultaneous acquisition of three languages in an environment where the main input of the two heritage languages came respectively from the father and from the mother. It addresses the challenges and the unique language developmental characteristics of the two children during their trilingual acquisition process

    This book examines the language development of two children from the ages of two till four, who are growing up exposed to English, Swiss German and French. Its aim is to ascertain the importance of different environmental factors in fostering active trilingualism. These factors include the quantity of input for each language, whether or not the societal language is spoken in the home, and the conversational style of the caregivers. Although increasing numbers of children are being raised trilingually, research in this field is scarce; this study thus makes an important contribution to our knowledge of trilingual language acquisition. A special point of interest lies in a comparison of the acquisition of two minority languages by a single child, since this allows us to pinpoint more precisely how the development of non-societal languages can be influenced. This book will be of considerable interest to researchers and students working on multilingualism and language acquisition alike.

    This book discusses literacy development in heritage language speakers and presents the results of four different quantitative studies that investigate the transfer of literacy skills in bi- and multilingual language development. The empirical studies focus on different populations of pupils, most of them located in various parts of Switzerland, and emphasise the potential residing in shared or transferred resources between their heritage languages and the languages spoken in the region to which their family has immigrated. The goal of all studies was to gain an understanding of the factors, both linguistic and non-linguistic in nature, that contribute to the development of language skills in both the heritage and school languages. Theoretical assumptions are put to the test via hypothesis testing and the generally shared assumptions on bilingual education are questioned based on the data. Furthermore, methodological problems in the investigation of linguistic interdependence are discussed. This book contributes to the scholarly investigation of potential beneficial effects in academic proficiency across languages in migrant children.

    This book aims to enable parents in trilingual families to consider possible language strategies on the basis of analysing their individual circumstances. It includes a tool for diagnostic self-analysis that will help each reader to identify their situation and learn how parents in similar situations have approached the task of supporting their children’s use of languages. Based on a unique survey of parents in trilingual families in two European countries, the book highlights the challenges that trilingual families face when living in mainly monolingual societies. It takes into account the recent emergence of a 'New Trilingualism' among educated parents who find themselves in trilingual families because of global trends in migration and the recent expansion of the EU.

The book fills a significant gap in the literature and resources available to multilingual parents. It was researched and written by a self-help group of multilingual parents and thus the book remains very practical and gives clear and realistic advice to multilingual parents facing choices or dilemmas.     This book is based on an eleven-year observation of two children who were simultaneously exposed to three languages from birth. It tells the story of two parents from different cultural, linguistic, and ethnic-racial backgrounds who joined to raise their two children with their heritage languages outside their native countries. It also tells the children’s story and the way they negotiated three cultures and languages and developed a trilingual identity. It sheds light on how parental support contributed to the children’s simultaneous acquisition of three languages in an environment where the main input of the two heritage languages came respectively from the father and from the mother. It addresses the challenges and the unique language developmental characteristics of the two children during their trilingual acquisition process
