""One of the strongest literary renditions of the Shoah I know."--Saul Friedlander, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Years of Extermination. This astonishing novel in verse tells the story of Henryk Wyrzykowski, a drifting, haunted young man hiding from the Vietnam War in the basement of a San Francisco welfare building and translating his mother's diaries. The diaries concern the Jedwabne massacre, an event that took place in German-occupied Poland in 1941. Wildly inventive, dark, beautiful, and unrelenting, The Wherewithal is a meditation on the nature of evil and the destruction of war"--

To eight-year old Bunny Morison, his mother is an angelic comforter in whose absence nothing is real or alive. To his older brother, Robert, his mother is someone he must protect, especially since the deadly, influenza epidemic of 1918 is ravaging their small Midwestern town. To James Morison, his wife, Elizabeth, is the center of a life that would disintegrate all too suddenly were she to disappear. Through the eyes of these characters, William Maxwell creates a sensitive portrait of an American family and of the complex woman who is its emotional pillar. Beautifully observed, deftly rendering the civilities and constraints of a vanished era, They Came Like Swallows measures the subterranean currents of love and need that run through all our lives. The result confirms Maxwell's reputation as one of the finest writers we have

Widely acclaimed for her ability to tell emotionally powerful stories that capture the real lives of women, bestselling novelist Heather A. Clark tackles the subject of childhood mental disorders. Elephant in the Sky is told from both nine-year-old Nate’s point of view and that of his mother, Ashley, an overworked ad executive who struggles with a demanding workload and the worry that she’s not spending enough time with her family — especially as her son’s battle with mental unbalance and paranoid delusions escalates. The two narratives converge in a deeply moving tale of a family dealing with mental illness. Elephant in the Sky is a story about unconditional love, and it articulates a complicated, real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity. It looks at what it means to be different in our society and beautifully explores the distance a mother will go to protect her child. "The 2013 NDHS is a national sample survey that provides up-to-date information on background characteristics of the respondents. Specifically, information is collected on fertility levels, marriage, fertility preferences, awareness and the use of family planning methods, child feeding practices, nutritional status of women and children, adult and childhood mortality, awareness and attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS, female genital mutilation, and domestic violence. The target groups were women and men age 15-49 in randomly selected households across Nigeria. Information was also collected on the height and weight of women and children age 0-5. In addition to presenting national estimates, the report provides estimates of key indicators for both the rural and urban areas in Nigeria, the six geo-political zones, the 36 states, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)

"Textological variants of Christian prayers for newborns, mothers, childbirth, and also for helping during birth (for the day of the birth, and for the 8th and 14th days after the birth). South Slavic, Moldavian, and East Slavic Cyrillic manuscripts from the 14th-17th centuries are used as are printed Trebniks (liturgical book of prayers) from the end of the 15th to the first half of the 17th century. Slavic versions of the prayers are compared with medieval Greek and specific features of the translations are discussed. The reconstructed multiple translations and redaction interventions attest to the care of the Orthodox Church for the rites of mothers and newborns and to the attempt of Slavic scribes to provide Trebniks that are rich in structure and correct in content"--Translation of summary provided by Hilandar Research Library, The Ohio State University
