    Wird über Krankheit von Migranten und Migrantinnen gesprochen, so werden schnell Kategorisierungen von Kulturdifferenz und Fremdheitserfahrung herangezogen. Um kulturalistische und verallgemeinernde Objektivierungen zu überwinden, werden in der Studie anhand biographisch narrativer Interviews seelische, körperliche und sozialweltliche Phänomene im Kontext von Migrationserfahrungen untersucht. Als »medizinische Fälle« diagnostizierte türkische Menschen wurden gebeten, ihre Lebensgeschichte zu erzählen. Diese biographischen Alltagserzählungen mit ihren Interpretationen der Migrationserfahrungen und des Krankwerdens in Deutschland stehen im Zentrum der Studie. Die eigene Lebenspraxis wird als biographische Arbeit bei der Balancierung lebens- und familiengeschichtlicher Erfahrungen und von gesellschaftlichen Anforderungen gewürdigt. Folgenden Fragen geht die Studie nach: In welche lebensgeschichtliche und gesellschaftliche Konstellation sind die Erfahrungen von Krankheit eingebettet? Welche Rolle spielt die individuelle Migrationsgeschichte? Wie sprechen Menschen über ihr eigenes Leben und die Welt und wie wird dieses Sprechen durch die Einflüsse im Herkunfts- sowie im Migrationsland beeinflusst?

Die Studie zeigt auf, dass gerade vermeintlich integrationshemmende Praktiken wie der Konsum türkischer Musik dem individuellen Integrationsprozess türkischer Jugendlicher förderlich sein können.

Es handelt sich dabei um Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund, also Angehörige einer kulturellen Minderheit, die aber im lateinamerikanischen Kontext aufgrund ihrer Beziehung zu Europa nicht marginalisiert werden, sondern vielmehr eine positive Diskriminierung erfahren. Dies verändert die Diskussion über hybride Identitäten und kulturelle Zwischenräume und ermöglicht einen erweiterten Blick auf Migration, Kultur und Identität.

    In den letzten Jahren rückt das Thema »Biographie und Historiographie« immer mehr in den Mittelpunkt der Kulturgeschichtsschreibung. Das Interesse an sogenannten »intellektuellen« oder »philosophischen Biographien« vornehmlich des 20. Jahrhunderts nimmt zu. Der Band widmet sich diesem Themenbereich und geht dabei der Frage nach, wie die individuelle Lebenserfahrung der jüdisch-deutschen humanistischen Gelehrten während der Emigration aus Deutschland in den 30er und 40er Jahren des zurückliegenden Jahrhunderts in ihren Arbeiten zur Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte sowie zur Philosophie und Philosophiegeschichtsschreibung reflektiert wird. Die These lässt sich folgendermaßen formulieren: Die Form der Gelehrsamkeit kann in einem signifikanten Maß als eine Antwort auf die individuelle Lebenssituation und als Produkt einer anhaltenden Suche nach emblematischen Denkmodellen für die Bewältigung existenzieller Fragen im »Zeitalter der Extreme« (Eric Hobsbawm) gelesen werden

    Vom Seemann zum Inhaber eines China-Restaurants die chinesische Migration in Hamburg hing eng mit dem Betrieb des Hafens zusammen. Sie veranschaulicht globale Verflechtungen an einem lokalen Beispiel. Seit den 1890er Jahren kamen chinesische Heizer auf europäischen Dampfschiffen in den Hamburger Hafen und blieben. Hatte man sie im Kaiserreich darin gehindert, so gelang es ihnen nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, eine Reihe Lokale, Wäschereien und Geschäfte im Hafenviertel zu eröffnen. Trotz bescheidener Dimensionen konstruierten Behörden und Bevölkerung sie als "Fremde" und Gefahr. Man sprach vom "Chinesenviertel" und phantasierte eine kriminelle Unterwelt in die Chinesenkeller. Die Behörden ließen nichts unversucht, um die mißliebige Einwanderung zu unterbinden, bis die Gestapo dieses Kapitel dann kurz vor Ende der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft mit ihrer "Chinesenaktion" beendete. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg kamen erneut Chinesen nach Hamburg, dieses Mal als Flüchtlinge. Unter den veränderten gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen in der frühen Bundesrepublik fanden sie jetzt als Betreiber von China-Restaurants eine ethnische Nische. Am Beispiel von chinesischen Seeleuten und Migranten in Hamburg beschreibt der Autor auf der Grundlage zahlreicher archivalischer und publizierter Quellen einen Aspekt globaler Migration.
