This edited book brings together experts on the sociolinguistics of immigration with a focus on the Italo-Romance dialects. Sociolinguistic research on immigrant communities in Italy has widely studied the acquisition and use of Italian as L2 by first-generation immigrants, the maintenance of immigrant languages and code-switching between Italian and the immigrant languages. However, these studies have mostly ignored or neglected to investigate immigrant speakers’ use of Italo-Romance dialects, their awareness of the sociolinguistic situation of majority and minority languages, and their attitudes towards them. Given the important role of Italo-Romance dialects in everyday communication and as a marker of regional identity, this book aims to fill this gap and understand more about the role that these languages play in the linguistic repertoire of immigrants. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of sociolinguistics, minority languages, multilingualism, migration, and social anthropology.

Media-produced images of people on the move and religion influence our conceptions of migration. These images have varied content and intent. Some provide awareness of the frequently disturbing situation of people who have lost everything, who have had to leave their homes and families and are desperately searching for new possibilities. Others exploit the traumatic topic and the fate of its subjects to entertain their audience with sensational news, which may include images of vast streams of people making their way to a safe haven in new countries. The mediatization of the phenomenon of flight introduces new pictures and perceptions into current debates about migration. It also requires that we interrogate how we view and engage such images and audiovisual documents. Ethical debates about responsibilities combine with questions about the role of religion and its functions. The present volume approaches the subject of migration and religion from an interdisciplinary perspective with a focus on audiovisual representation. The contributions consider feature films, documentaries, television reports, short films, and press photos.

"This book is the first study of recent coming-of-age novels from Brazil and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. I investigate the divide in Afro-Latin American research that usually favors either Hispanic-America or Brazil, but not both. I argue that contemporary novelists have adapted the coming-of-age novel to explore central themes in the Afro-Latin American experience such as Blackness, African religions and folkloric traditions, and immigration. While there is no firm consensus on the term Blackness, scholars typically use the term to describe the social, cultural, and historical experience of Afro-descendants in the diaspora. The Afro-Latin American bildungsromans examined in this study include a number of religions such as Catholicism, Spiritism, and syncretic folk religions as well as Santería and Umbanda reflecting the variety of beliefs in Latin America. I have found that young people turn to religions and spiritual traditions in time of need. Going on a journey as part of one's personal development is one of the central themes of many bildungsroman, and this pertains too in Afro-Latin American novels. Caribbean characters are depicted as immigrating to the United States whereas few Brazilians have enough resources to travel to North America and instead move to larger cities within their own country"--

In Conscripts of Migration: Neoliberal Globalization, Nationalism, and the Literature of New African Diasporas, author Christopher Ian Foster analyzes increasingly urgent questions regarding crises of global immigration by redefining migration in terms of conscription and by studying contemporary literature. Reporting on immigration, whether liberal or conservative, popular or scholarly, leaves out the history in which the Global North helped create outward migration in the Global South. From histories of racial capitalism, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and imperialism to contemporary neoliberal globalization and the resurgence of xenophobic nationalism, countries in the Global North continue to devastate and destabilize the Global South. Britain, France, Italy, and the United States, in different ways, police the effects of their own global policies at their borders. Foster provides a substantial study of a new body of contemporary African diasporic literature called migritude literature. Migritude indicates the work and ideas of a disparate yet distinct group of younger African authors born after independence in the 1960s. Most often migritude authors have lived both in and outside Africa and narrate the experiences of migration under the pressures of globalization. They also emphasize that immigration itself and stereotypes of the immigrant are entangled with the history of colonialism. Authors like Fatou Diome, Shailja Patel, Abdourahman Waberi, Cristina Ali Farah, and others confront critical issues of migrancy, diaspora, departure, return, racism, identity, gender, sexuality, and postcoloniality

This book argues that contemporary Haitian literature historicizes the political and environmental problems raised by the 2010 earthquake by building on texts of earlier generations. It contends that this literary "eco-archive" challenges universalizing narratives of the Anthropocene with depictions of migration and refuge within Haiti and around the Americas. How can we think of art history as a discipline that moves process-based, performative, and cultural migratory movement to the center of its theoretical and methodical analyses? With contributions from internationally renowned experts, this manual, for the first time, provides answers as to what consequences the interaction of migration and globalization has on research in the field of the science of art, on curatory practice, and on artistic production and theory. The objective of this multi-vocal anthology is to open up an interdisciplinary discourse surrounding the increased focus on the phenomenon of migration in art history Wie lässt sich eine Kunstgeschichte denken, die prozessuale, performative und transkulturelle Wanderungsbewegungen ins Zentrum ihrer theoretischen und methodischen Analysen rückt?
