    Argues that Shakespeare transforms philosophies of comedy and melancholy by revising them concomitantlyIconic as Hamlet is, Shakespearean comedy showcases an extraordinary reliance on melancholy that ultimately reminds us of the porous demarcation between laughter and sorrow. This richly contextualized study of Shakespeare's comic engagement with sadness contends that the playwright rethinks melancholy through comic theatre and conversely, re-theorizes comedy through melancholy. In fashioning his own comic interpretation of the humour, Shakespeare distils an impressive array of philosophical discourses on the matter, from Aristotle to Robert Burton and as a result, transforms the theoretical afterlife of both notions. The book suggests that the deceptively potent sorrow at the core of plays such as The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, or The Winter's Tale influences modern accounts of melancholia elaborated by Sigmund Freud, Judith Butler, and others. What's so funny about melancholy in Shakespearean comedy? It might just be its reminder that, behind roaring laughter, one inevitably finds the subtle pangs of melancholy.     "California and the Melancholic American Identity in Joan Didion's Novels: Exiled from Eden focuses on the concept of Californian identity in the fiction of Joan Didion. This identity is understood as melancholic, in the sense that the critics following the tradition of both Sigmund Freud and Walter Benjamin use the word. The book traces the progress of the way Californian identity is portrayed in Joan Didion's novels, starting with the first two in which California plays the central role, Run River and Play It As It Lays, through A Book of Common Prayer to Democracy and The Last Thing He Wanted, where California functions only as a distant point of reference, receding to the background of Didion's interests. Curiously enough, Didion presents Californian history as a history of white settlement, disregarding whole chapters of the history of the region in which the Californios and Native Americans, among other groups, played a crucial role: it is this reticence that the monograph sees as the main problem of Didion's fiction and presents it as the silent center of gravity in Didion's oeuvre. The monograph proposes to see the melancholy expressed by Didion's fiction organized into four losses: of Nature, History, Ethics, and Language; around which the main analytical chapters are constructed. What remains unrepresented and silenced comes back to haunt Didion's fiction, and it results in a melancholic portrayal of California and its identity - which is the central theme this monograph addresses" --

    Die Melancholie hat in nahezu allen Epochen der europäischen Kulturgeschichte ein besonderes Interesse erfahren - unabhängig davon, ob sie als psychophysische Erkrankung, als dauerhafte Charakteranlage oder als transitorische Seelenstimmung betrachtet wurde. Auch Goethe setzt sich in seinem literarischen Werk intensiv mit den unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen der Melancholie auseinander. Bemerkenswert ist dabei vor allem, wie konsequent er auf antike, mittelalterliche und zeitgenössische Melancholiekonzepte zurückgreift, wie exakt er die Protagonisten seiner Dichtungen nach diesen Mustern modelliert und wie umfassend er über die Möglichkeiten einer "melancholiefreien" Existenz nachdenkt. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht Goethes Romane von den »Leiden des jungen Werther« über »Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre« bis zu den »Wahlverwandtschaften«; das Singspiel »Lila« sowie die Dramen »Torquato Tasso« und »Faust« vervollständigen das Spektrum. Alle Dichtungen werden im Horizont ihrer jeweils spezifischen Melancholie-Thematik analysiert und einer ebenso differenzierten wie weitausgreifenden Gesamtinterpretation unterzogen. Goethes literarisches Schaffen rückt erstmals in einen psychologischen, philosophischen und medizinischen Problemzusammenhang, der für das späte 18. und frühe 19. Jahrhundert von fundamentaler Bedeutung ist

    Kulturell kodierte Gefühle haben in vielfacher Weise strukturierende Eigenschaften für Individuen und ihre Gesellschaft. Die Bedeutung dieser Emotionskodes ist bisher noch wenig erforscht und zugleich ein ertragreiches Feld der modernen Kulturwissenschaft. Diese Studie widmet sich der Kultivierung sanfter Melancholie im 18. Jahrhundert aus Sicht einer literaturwissenschaftlich gelagerten Emotionsforschung, um der vermeintlich allein repressiven Melancholie im Zeitalter der Aufklärung positive Effekte und Ziele zur Seite zu stellen. Im Zentrum stehen englische und deutsche Texte der Lyrik, Epik und Prosa zwischen 1720 und 1785. Die Analyse ihrer Emotionalisierungsstrategien in Emotionskodes legt eine sakrale und säkulare Verbreitung sanfter Melancholie dar, die die Entwicklung eines individuellen Fühlens und damit Bewertens in hohem Maße förderte. Sanfte Melancholie wurde zum Einsatz gebracht, um Leserinnen und Leser emotional zu formen, ihnen Sprachfähigkeit über Phänomene zu geben und schließlich ihre emotionale Autonomie zu bekräftigen

This study argues that the melancholy of Les Fleurs du Mal and Madame Bovary serves as an allegory of this poetological structure"-- "In Baudelaires und Flauberts berühmtesten Werken, Les Fleurs du Mal und Madame Bovary, kommt dem ennui, der epochenspezifischen Ausformung der Melancholie, eine zentrale Rolle zu: In Baudelaires Gedichtzyklus versucht der lyrische Sprecher Gedicht um Gedicht dieses "schlimmste aller Laster" immer wieder aufs Neue erfolglos zu überwinden, und Flauberts Emma Bovary empfindet ein ständiges Ungenügen, von dem sie sich ebenso unaufhörlich wie vergeblich zu befreien versucht.     Written using critical theory, especially by Walter Benjamin, Blanchot and Derrida, Allegory and the Work of Melancholy: The Late Medieval and Shakespeare reads medieval and early modern texts, exploring allegory within texts, allegorical readings of texts, and melancholy in texts. Authors studied are Langland and Chaucer, Hoccleve, on his madness, Lydgate and Henryson. Shakespeare's first tetralogy, the three parts of Henry VI and Richard III conclude this investigation of death, mourning, madness and of complaint. Benjamin's writings on allegory inspire this linking, which also considers Dürer, Baldung and Holbein and the dance of the dead motifs. The study sees subjectivity created as obsessional, paranoid, and links melancholia, madness and allegorical creation, where parts of the subject are split off from each other, and speak as wholes. Allegory and melancholy are two modes - a state of writing and a state of being - where the subject fragments or disappears. These texts are aware of the power of death within writing, which makes them, fascinating. The book will appeal to readers of literature from the medieval to the Baroque, and to those interested in critical theory, and histories of visual culture

    Main description: Goethe setzt sich in seinem literarischen Werk intensiv mit den unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen der Melancholie auseinander. Bemerkenswert ist dabei vor allem, wie differenziert er auf antike, mittelalterliche und zeitgenössische Melancholiekonzepte zurückgreift, wie exakt er die Protagonisten seiner Dichtungen nach diesen Mustern modelliert und wie umfassend er über die Möglichkeiten einer >melancholiefreien< Existenz nachdenkt. Die vorliegende Studie rückt Goethes literarisches Schaffen erstmals in einen kulturhistorischen Problemzusammenhang, der für das späte 18. und frühe 19. Jahrhundert von fundamentaler Bedeutung ist

    Main description: In his literary works Goethe engages profoundly with various manifestations of melancholy. Highly remarkable is the subtlety with which he takes up ancient, medieval, and contemporary concepts of melancholy, the accuracy with which he models the protagonists of his works on these patterns, and the range of his reflections on the possibilities of an existence free of melancholy. The present study is the first to examine Goethe's literary works in the context of a culture-historical problematic of major significance for the late 18th and early 19th century

    Review text: "Valks Dissertation [bietet] nach der Relevanz ihres thematischen Programms und dessen besonnener Umsetzung im Dreischritt von Genese, Symptomatik und Therapie eine bislang entbehrte Überblicksdarstellung, auf die man sich in der Goetheforschung noch oft beziehen wird. In: Zeitschrift für Germanistik 16/2006 "Valks klare Sprachführung, die sich aller terminologischen Manierismen enthält, macht die Lektüre seiner Studie zu einem besonderen Genuß und sollte ihm eine der Bedeutsamkeit seiner Ergebnisse entsprechende große Leserschaft eintragen.0In: Lessing-Yearbook 36/2005 "Valk's study is the first general survey of the theme of melancholy in Goethe's writing. It deserves to be widely read, for its implications are extremely significant. [...] Valk has beaten a path down which others will want to follow him, and if there is much work left to be done, this testifies to the importance of the theme.

    Valk's monograph establishes a framework within which much of Goethe's writing will now have to be seen. Damit treten erstmals bisher unbeachtete Kontinuitäten und Konstellationen innerhalb des Œuvres ans Licht.
