    "California and the Melancholic American Identity in Joan Didion's Novels: Exiled from Eden focuses on the concept of Californian identity in the fiction of Joan Didion. This identity is understood as melancholic, in the sense that the critics following the tradition of both Sigmund Freud and Walter Benjamin use the word. The book traces the progress of the way Californian identity is portrayed in Joan Didion's novels, starting with the first two in which California plays the central role, Run River and Play It As It Lays, through A Book of Common Prayer to Democracy and The Last Thing He Wanted, where California functions only as a distant point of reference, receding to the background of Didion's interests. Curiously enough, Didion presents Californian history as a history of white settlement, disregarding whole chapters of the history of the region in which the Californios and Native Americans, among other groups, played a crucial role: it is this reticence that the monograph sees as the main problem of Didion's fiction and presents it as the silent center of gravity in Didion's oeuvre. The monograph proposes to see the melancholy expressed by Didion's fiction organized into four losses: of Nature, History, Ethics, and Language; around which the main analytical chapters are constructed. What remains unrepresented and silenced comes back to haunt Didion's fiction, and it results in a melancholic portrayal of California and its identity - which is the central theme this monograph addresses" --

    Klappentext: Das bürgerliche Trauerspiel bildet seit dem Ende der sechziger Jahre einen Fokus germanistischer Forschung. Sich von einlinigen Basis-Überbau-Zuordnungen absetzend integriert die Untersuchung sozialwissenschaftlich und diskursanalytisch orientierte Interpretationsansätze, um so zu einer genaueren Beschreibung des "Bürgerlichen" im Trauerspiel Diderots und Lessings zu gelangen. Dies ist offensichtlich nicht an die soziale Zuordnung der Figuren gebunden, sondern an eine abstrakte Ethik, die bereits in ihrer Konstitution auf die "Dialektik der Aufklärung" verweist. This study argues that the melancholy of Les Fleurs du Mal and Madame Bovary serves as an allegory of this poetological structure"-- "In Baudelaires und Flauberts berühmtesten Werken, Les Fleurs du Mal und Madame Bovary, kommt dem ennui, der epochenspezifischen Ausformung der Melancholie, eine zentrale Rolle zu: In Baudelaires Gedichtzyklus versucht der lyrische Sprecher Gedicht um Gedicht dieses "schlimmste aller Laster" immer wieder aufs Neue erfolglos zu überwinden, und Flauberts Emma Bovary empfindet ein ständiges Ungenügen, von dem sie sich ebenso unaufhörlich wie vergeblich zu befreien versucht. Es ist die gleiche Struktur eines unstillbaren Begehrens, die den Fleurs du Mal wie Madame Bovary zugrunde liegt: Dem melancholischen lyrischen Sprecher wie der melancholischen Romanheldin erscheint die Welt grundsätzlich als defizitär, weshalb alles Neue eine Erlösung von dieser elementaren Mangelhaftigkeit zu versprechen scheint. Doch gehört es zur Dialektik dieses Neuen, dass es, sobald es erscheint, zu etwas Altem gerät, das es nun seinerseits zu überwinden gilt. Auf diese Weise wird eine Suche in Gang gesetzt, die kein Ende finden kann, und die als bewusst gestaltete Analogie zur modernen Ästhetik gedeutet wird -- einer Ästhetik, in der die Kategorie des Neuen an die Stelle der alten Kategorie des Schönen tritt"--

    "In Inhuman Citizenship, Juliana Chang claims that literary representations of Asian American domesticity may be understood as symptoms of America's relationship to its national fantasies and to the "jouissance"--a Lacanian term signifying a violent yet euphoric shattering of the self--that both overhangs and underlies those fantasies. In the national imaginary, according to Chang, racial subjects are often perceived as the source of jouissance, which they supposedly embody through their excesses of violence, sexuality, anger, and ecstasy--excesses that threaten to overwhelm the social order.To examine her argument that racism ascribes too much, rather than a lack of, humanity, Chang analyzes domestic accounts by Asian American writers, including Fae Myenne Ng's Bone, Brian Ascalon Roley's American Son, Chang-rae Lee's Native Speaker, and Suki Kim's The Interpreter."
