We develop a segmented markets model which rationalizes the effects of monetary policy on the term structure of interest rates. When arbitrageurs' portfolio features positive duration, an unexpected rise in the short rate lowers their wealth and raises term premia. A calibration to the U.S. economy accounts for the transmission of monetary shocks to long rates. We discuss the additional implications of our framework for state-dependence in policy transmission, the volatility and slope of the yield curve, and trends in term premia accompanying trends in the natural rate

This paper investigates how increases in concentration can be interrupted or reversed by changes in how firms compete on quality. We examine the U.S. hotel industry during the past half century. We document that starting in the early 1980s, quality competition came more in the form of costs that vary with hotel size, and less in the form of costs that are fixed with hotel size, particularly for business travelers. We then show that, consistent with Sutton (1991), industry structure has evolved differently since then in areas that are business travel versus personal travel destinations. Demand increases have been associated with more, but smaller, hotels in business travel destinations. In contrast, the growth in the number of hotels is much smaller, and the growth in average hotel size is much greater, in personal travel destinations. We provide evidence that this change reflects the emergence of two new classes of hotels - limited service and all-suites hotels - that did not exist before the early 1980s. These entrants - many of which had high quality rooms but which had limited out-of-room amenities - had a narrower competitive impact on other hotels than did the entrants of the 1960s and 1970s, which competed more on out-of-the-room amenities, and this led the industry structure to evolve differently.

Two important characteristics of current European equity markets are rooted in changes in financial regulation (the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive). The regulation (i) allows new trading venues to emerge, generating a fragmented market place and (ii) allows for a substantial fraction of trading to take place in the dark, outside publicly displayed order books. This paper evaluates the impact on liquidity of fragmentation in visible order books and dark trading for a sample of 52 Dutch stocks. We consider global liquidity by consolidating the entire limit order books of all visible European trading venues, and local liquidity by considering the traditional market only. We find that fragmentation in visible order books improves global liquidity, but dark trading has a detrimental effect. In addition, local liquidity is lowered by fragmentation in visible order books.

This paper proposes new metrics for the process of price discovery on the main electronic trading platform for euro-denominated government securities. Analysing price data on daily transactions for 107 bonds over a period of twenty-seven months, we find a greater degree of price leadership of the dominant market when our measures (as opposed to the traditional price discovery metrics) are used. We also present unambiguous evidence that a market's contribution to price discovery is crucially affected by the level of trading activity. The implications of these empirical findings are discussed in the light of the debate about the possible restructuring of the regulatory framework for the Treasury bond market in Europe. -- Price discovery ; liquidity ; MTS system

Marketing-oriented companies do not focus on their products and services. The true basis of their decision-making is the customer and her needs. The more marketing-oriented companies are, the bigger their competitive advantage is. A critical requirement for a deep and insightful customer understanding is high-quality market segmentation. At the moment there is a huge gap between theoretically available segmentation techniques and their use in business practice. The field research reveals that company size and industry are the crucial drivers of the type of segmentation employed and the intensity of their use. German companies make only limited use of the segmentation potential at hand. Especially SMEs, intracompany services as well as the retail industry rarely employ state-of-the-art market segmentation techniques.

We estimate the gross margin that is earned from the supply of electricity to households in Ireland. Using half hourly electricity demand data, the system marginal price (also called the wholesale price) and the retail price of electricity, we analyse how the gross margin varies across customers with different characteristics. The wholesale price varies throughout the day, thus, the time at which electricity is used affects the gross margin. The main factor in determining gross margin, however, is demand. The highest gross margins are earned from supplying customers that have the following characteristics: being aged between 46 and 55, having a household income of at least €75,000 per annum, being self-employed, having a third level education, having a professional or managerial occupation, living in a household with 7 or more people, living in a detached house, having at least 5 bedrooms or being a mortgage holder. An OLS regression shows that gross margin is partly explained by the energy conservation measures which are present in a household, the number of household members, the number of bedrooms, income, age, occupation and accommodation type. -- Electricity demand ; market segmentation ; gross margin ; Ireland
