This is the first in-depth study of Apuleius' Metamorphoses to look at the different attitudes characters adopt towards magic as a key to deciphering the complex dynamics of the entire work. The variety of responses to magic is unveiled in the narrative as the protagonist Lucius encounters an assortment of characters, either in embedded tales or in the main plot. A contextualized approach illuminates Lucius' relatively good fortune when compared to other characters in the novel - this results from his involvement with the magic of a sorcerer's apprentice, rather than that of a real witch, and signals the possibility of eventual salvation. A careful investigation of Lucius' attitude towards Isis in book 11 and his relationship with the witch-slave girl Photis earlier on suggests that the novel's final book may be read as a second "Metamorphoses", consciously rewritten from a positive perspective. Last but not least, the book also breaks new ground by examining the narrative structure of the Metamorphoses against the background of the typical plotline found in the ideal romance. The comparison shows how Apuleius both follows and alters this plot, exploiting the genre to his own specific ends, in keeping with his central theme of metamorphosis

In the English Renaissance, poetry was imagined to inspire moral behaviour in its readers, but the efficacy of poetry was also linked to 'conjuration,' the theologically dangerous practice of invoking spirits with words. Magical Imaginations explores how major writers of the period – including Spenser, Marlowe, and Shakespeare – negotiated this troubling link between poetry and magic in their attempts to transform readers and audiences with the power of art. Through analyses of texts ranging from sermons and theological treatises to medical tracts and legal documents, Genevieve Guenther sheds new light on magic as a cultural practice in early modern England. She demonstrates that magic was a highly pragmatic, even cynical endeavor infiltrating unexpected spheres – including Elizabethan taxation policy and Jacobean political philosophy. With this new understanding of early modern magic, and a fresh context for compelling readings of classic literary works, Magical Imaginations reveals the central importance of magic to English literary history.

"Shakespeare and the Comedy of Enchantment argues that enchantment constitutes a key emotional and intellectual dimension of Shakespeare's comedies. It thus makes a new claim about the rejuvenating value of comedy for individuals and society. Shakespeare's comedies orchestrate ongoing encounters between the rational and the mysterious, between doubt and fascination, with feelings moved by elements of enchantment that also seem a little ridiculous. In such a drama, lines of causality become complex, and even satisfying endings leave certain matters incomplete and contingent--openings for scrutiny and thought. In addressing enchantment, the book takes exception to the modernist vision of a deterministic 'disenchanted' world. As Shakespeare's action advances, comic mysteries accrue--uncanny coincidences; magical sympathies; inexplicable repetitions; psychic influences; and puzzlements about the meaning of events--all of whose numinous effects linger ambiguously after reason has apparently answered the play's questions. Separate chapters explore the devices, tropes, and motifs of enchantment: magical clowns who alter the action through stop-time interludes; structural repetitions that suggest mysteriously converging, even opaquely providential destinies; locales that oppose magical and protean forces to regulatory and quotidian values; desires, thoughts, and utterances that 'manifest' comically monstrous events; characters who return from the dead, facilitated by the desires of the living; play-endings crossed by harmony and dissonance, with moments of wonder that make possible the mysterious action of forgiveness. Wonder and wondering in Shakespeare's and other comedies, it emerges, become the conditions for new possibilities. Chapters refer extensively to early modern history, Renaissance and modern theories of comedy, treatises on magical science, and contemporaneous Italian and Tudor comedy."--

Introduction: Love magic as a metaphor for control and admiration. Convivencia, courtly love, and categorizing magic -- Thirteenth-century Alfonso X's interest in Andalusi and Islamic magic. Eucharists as magical chastity belts in Cantiga 104 -- Demons as tools for magical seduction in Cantiga 125 -- Enchanted spaces as sites of melding thirteenth/fourteenth-century knowledge -- Marriage and temptation in the Sulfuric Lake in the Libro del Caballero Zifar -- The devil's seduction of Roboán and his loss of the Fortunate Isles in the Zifar -- Transgressive clerical employment of fourteenth-century go-betweens -- Amorous linguistic enchantments in Libro de buen amor -- Sephardi and Andalusi influences in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century mediators. Match-maker Celestina's pantry of herbs and medicinal supplies -- The cord that broke courtly love in Celestina -- Lingering morisco practices in seventeenth-century imaginary. Medieval inspirations for feminine empowerment and meddling neighbors and mediated trickery of the innocent -- Nocturnal trace-induced intimacy by Moorish necromancer in "La inocencia castigada". "This book explores various representations and productions of love magic in medieval and early modern Iberian fictions. The use of magic serves as a metaphor for issues of control and exchange of knowledge among the various religious identities of the Peninsula throughout the centuries"--

Annotation This is the first in-depth study of Apuleius Metamorphoses to juxtapose the different attitudes towards magic adopted by Lucius and other characters, either in embedded tales or in the main plot, as a key to deciphering the complex dynamics of the work. The contextualized approach pursued in this study further suggests that the novels final book may be read as a second Metamorphoses, rewritten from a positive perspective. The book breaks new ground by examining the narrative structure of the Metamorphoses against the background of the typical plotline found in the ideal romance

The Onos versus Apuleius's Metamorphoses -- Lucius versus Socrates and Aristomenes -- Lucius's and Milo's tales of Diophanes and Asinius's prophecy : internal readers and the author -- Lucius versus Thelyphron -- The tale of Cupid and Psyche as a mythic variant of the novel -- "War" in magic and lovemaking -- Lucius's metamorphosis into an ass as a narrative device -- Rewriting Metamorphoses 1-10 : the Isis book -- Transforming the genre : Apuleius's Metamorphoses -- Lucius's Metamorphic change and entrance into a new life as a metaphorical representation of the sailing of Isis's ship

This book is intended primarily for an academic audience, especially scholars - students and teachers - doing research and publication in categories such as myth and legend, children's literature, and the Harry Potter series in particular. Additionally, it is meant for college and university teachers. However, the essays do not contain jargon that would put off an avid "lay" Harry Potter fan. Overall, this collection is an excellent addition to the growing analytical scholarship on the Harry Potter series; however, it is the first academic collection to offer practical methods of using Rowling
