    Das Buch stellt den Anspruch, Phänomene, die man als "Klassiker" bezeichnet, besser zu verstehen und zugleich tradierter Vorstellungen darüber, was als klassisch gilt oder zu gelten hat, zu korrigieren. Dazu wird "Klassik" nicht, wie in den historischen und ideologiekritischen Debatten üblich, als Epochenbegriff verstanden, sondern als eine kulturelle Praxis, die in medialen und lebensweltlichen Adaptionen realisiert wird. Gefragt wird, kurz gesagt, wie und warum einige Autor*innen oder Werke über längere historische Perioden hinweg präsent bleiben und ein Kulturgut - in dem Fall exemplarisch die Ballade - so ausdrücklich prägen, dass sie als "Klassiker" wahrgenommen werden. Die Antwort geht von der These aus, dass dies - im Unterschied zu immer noch verbreiteten essentialistischen Erklärungsansätzen - nicht von der Qualität des Autors oder der Autorin bzw. ihrer Werke abhängt, sondern von soziokulturellen Bedarfskonstellationen.Im Ergebnis der Arbeit steht ein Zugriff, der "Klassik" nicht wiederholt als ein umstrittenes Konzept problematisiert, sondern als kulturwissenschaftliches Phänomen komplementär zum Kanon heuristisch profiliert und darüber hinaus ein Begriffsangebot zu dessen Analyse macht. For the last three centuries, prominent thinkers have been asking themselves what it is that constitutes a classic. This volume takes up this question and shows how cultural artifacts become and remain classics through transcultural circulation, i.e., through their adaptation in ever-changing media and the expansion of the cultural milieu in which they are received.

Integrating musicology with literary studies, ecocriticism, and environmental history, author Jennifer Saltzstein compares the nature imagery that pervades the songs of the trouvères of northern France to the physical terrain and climate of the lands on which their authors lived.     The period from the 1850s to the 1890s in Paris marked a key turning point for poets and composers, as they grappled with the new ways in which poetry and music could intersect. Under the particular conditions of the time and place, both art forms underwent significant developments which challenged the status of each form. In both creative and critical work from this era, poets and composers offered tantalising but problematic insights into «musical» poetry and «poetic» music.The central issue examined in this book is that of what happens to poetry when it encounters music, especially as song. The author places Baudelaire’s famous sonnet «La Mort des amants» at the heart of the analysis, tracing its transposition into song by a succession of both amateur and professional composers, examining works by Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, Serpette, Rollinat, Debussy and Charpentier, as well as an extraordinary parodic song version by Valade and Verlaine.A companion website offers recordings of each of the songs analysed in this book.

    "Disaster Songs as Intangible Memorials in Atlantic Canada draws on a collection of over 500 Atlantic Canadian songs relating to disasters from 1891 up until the present, and describes the characteristics that define them as intangible memorials. The book demonstrates the relationship between vernacular memorials - informal memorials collectively and spontaneously created from objects and notes by the general public - and disaster songs.
