    Este libro propone un nuevo estudio de las cartas privadas , el proceso de recopilación y edición que en un momento determinado las traslada desde la esfera privada a la esfera pública, y las implicaciones ideológicas y literarias de ese traslado. La autora examina tanto el funcionamiento discursivo del texto privado y su relación con los textos públicos como la economía del género en el ámbito de las instituciones culturales de finales del siglo XVIII a mediados del XIX. Del dominio público analiza tres posiciones significativamente distintas de escritores de cartas: la de un escritor, Juan Valera, que ocupa un espacio canónico y escasamente problemático en la historia literaria; la de una autora, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, cuya condición de mujer continúa problematizando sus vínculos con el mundo letrado; y finalmente, la de un pintor, Francisco de Goya, más ajeno al mundo estrictamente literario y a los valores primordialmente estéticos de la escritura. Al mismo tiempo, el análisis pondera tres modelos de escritura y de lectura de cartas - la carta de viaje, la carta de amor, y la carta de amistad - y atiende a las transformaciones que la esfera privada ha sufrido desde la Ilustración al romanticismo y el postromanticismo
