Various issues that can be studied under cultural competence are found in numerous disciplines, but it seems that each discipline, be it semiotics, ethnic studies or literature, works on its own. As such, a comprehensive approach encompassing different aspects of culture may be in order when examining cultural competence. This volume focuses on the interaction of cultural influences on language teaching and learning. More specifically, it investigates how the implementation of better cultural understanding in language teaching and learning can be achieved. The book also serves to shed light on the fact that cultural differences can be a hindrance for learners with good linguistic competence seeking to reach native-like competence. Offering an ideal platform to address what potential benefits a fresh approach can bring to the field of linguistics, as well as applied linguistics, the volume provides an opportunity for scholars and language teachers alike to understand the importance of cultural influences in language acquisition, pointing to a new direction in language teaching and learning

English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) Transcultural Communication acknowledges the interconnection between language and culture in intercultural contexts, where the sharing of linguistic and cultural norms and practices cannot be taken for granted. This book suggests ‘ELF Transcultural Competence’ as an alternative model of skills that are needed to be successful communicators in such contexts. Moreover, it explores the important role of communication strategies and meaning negotiation in ELF transcultural contexts, focusing on both qualitative and quantitative analysis. It also introduces some practical examples of how to include such issues in an ELF-aware pedagogy that could be of particular interest for teachers, teacher educators and researchers

This book provides a rich connection between theory and practice for those seeking to work with stories in organisational, community, educative or coaching settings. With an international cast of contributors, it charters a unique inquiry into both ethics and the facilitation philosophies for working with stories supporting educators, facilitators, trainers and consultants towards more effective and considered practice. This book will be a valuable resource for professionals and reflective practitioners seeking to explore: What informs an ethics of facilitating with stories? How can we create safe spaces for story work? In what ways do we need to be attuned to power when working with stories in organisations and corporations? What are the unintended and ethical consequences of facilitating with stories?
