    The question of how to preserve a "living" (and not merely academic) memory of the Nazi era beyond the lifetime of living witnesses is primarily a question of narrative transmission. In the context of experientiality research in literary studies and using the example of transgenerational story-telling techniques, the study shows how historical experiences can be evoked by reading and embedded into the reader’s personal body of experience Wie über die Ära der Zeitzeugenschaft hinaus ein ‚lebendiges‘ (statt lediglich wissensbasiertes) Erinnern an die NS-Zeit sichergestellt werden kann, ist vor allem eine Frage der narrativen Vermittlung. Im Rahmen literaturwissenschaftlicher Experientialitätsforschung und am Beispiel transgenerationaler Erzähltechniken wird gezeigt, wie beim Lesen historische Erfahrungen evoziert und im eigenen Erfahrungshorizont verankert werden

    We live in an age that is witnessing a growing interest in narrative studies, cognitive neuroscientific tools, mind studies and artificial intelligence hypotheses. This book therefore aims to expand the exegesis of Carroll's "Alice" books, aligning them with the current intellectual environment. The theoretical force of this volume lies in the successful encounter between a great book (and all its polysemous ramifications) and a new interpretative point of view, powerful enough to provide a new original contribution, but well grounded enough not to distort the text itself. Moreover, this book is one of the first to offer a complete, thorough analysis of one single text through the theoretical lens of cognitive narratology, and not just as a series of brief examples embedded within a more general discussion. It emphasises in a more direct, effective way the actual novelty and usefulness of the dialogue established between narrative theory and the cognitive sciences. It links specific concepts elaborated in the theory of cognitive narratology with the analysis of the "Alice" books, helping in this way to discuss, question and extend the concepts themselves, opening up new interpretations and practical methods

    This study analyzes an oral performance of the entire Gospel of Mark, with emphasis on involvement with characters and events, the emotional effects of such involvement, and how these processes maintain or shape the identity of those who hear the Gospel. Insights from cognitive poetics and psychonarratology are employed to illuminate the complex, cognitive processes that take place when audience members experience an oral performance of the Gospel. Consequently, this study expands previous research on the Gospel of Mark which was conducted on the basis of narrative criticism, orality criticism, and performance criticism by including cognitive aspects. Cognitive poetics and psychonarratology have to my knowledge not been extensively employed to illuminate an oral performance of the Gospel of Mark previously. This investigation provides: (1) An original, coherent theoretical and methodological framework; (2) An analysis of mechanisms which promote involvement with characters and events in the Markan narrative; (3) An examination of the prospective emotional effects of such involvement; (4) Reflections on the potential of these mechanisms with regard to identity maintenance or formation through cultural memory; (5) A cognitive poetic commentary on the entire Gospel of Mark

    The study develops a new theoretical approach to the relationship between two media (jazz music and writing) and demonstrates its explanatory power with the help of a rich sampling of jazz poems. Currently, the mimetic approach to intermediality (e.g., the notion that jazz poetry imitates jazz music) still dominates the field of criticism. This book challenges that interpretive approach. It demonstrates that a mimetic view of jazz poetry hinders readers from perceiving the metaphoric ways poets rendered music in writing. Drawing on and extending recent cognitive metaphor theories (Lakoff, Johnson, Turner, Fauconnier), it promotes a conceptual metaphor model that allows readers to discover the innovative ways poets translate "melody," "dynamics," "tempo," "mood," and other musical elements into literal and figurative expressions that invite readers to imagine the music in their mind's eye (i.e., their mind's ear)

    The question of how to preserve a “living” (and not merely academic) memory of the Nazi era beyond the lifetime of living witnesses is primarily a question of narrative transmission. In the context of experientiality research in literary studies and using the example of transgenerational story-telling techniques, the study shows how historical experiences can be evoked by reading and embedded into the reader’s personal body of experience Wie über die Ära der Zeitzeugenschaft hinaus ein ‚lebendiges‘ (statt lediglich wissensbasiertes) Erinnern an die NS-Zeit sichergestellt werden kann, ist vor allem eine Frage der narrativen Vermittlung.     Wie verstehen wir literarische Figuren und deren fiktionales Bewusstsein beim Lesen? Welche Rolle spielen figurale Konstellationen und wie funktioniert Multiperspektivität? Unter Rückgriff auf moderne Kognitionsforschung wendet sich diese Arbeit dem Zusammenspiel von Figurenperspektiven zu und zeigt, dass diesem eine entscheidende Rolle beim Verständnis literarischer Texte und deren Interpretation zukommt. Auf methodisch reflektierte Weise werden dabei etablierte erzähltheoretische Ansätze zu fiktionalen Akteuren und Perspektivenstrukturen mithilfe von Blending Theory neu gedacht und am Beispiel des englischen Romans zu einer allgemeinen Theorie perspektivischer Interaktion weiterentwickelt. Dabei geht es neben der theoretischen Erfassung dieses Zusammenspiels auch um die Möglichkeit der praktischen Anwendung auf konkrete literarische Texte.
