Biographical note: Donna Patrick is Associate Professor at Carleton University, Ontario, Canada. Since the early 1970s, the Inuit of Arctic Quebec have struggled to survive economically and culturally in a rapidly changing northern environment. The promotion and maintenance of Inuktitut, their native language, through language policy and Inuit control over institutions, have played a major role in this struggle. Language, Politics, and Social Interaction in an Inuit Community is a study of indigenous language maintenance in an Arctic Quebec community where four languages - Inuktitut, Cree, French, and English - are spoken. It examines the role that dominant and minority languages play in the social life of this community, linking historical analysis with an ethnographic study of face-to-face interaction and attitudes towards learning and speaking second and third languages in everyday life. Review text: "[...] a thorough and fascinating ethnography of language use in the multilingual communitiy in Nothern Quebec.2Shelley Tulloch in: Études Inuit 1-2/2005

One of the world’s preeminent cultural anthropologists leaves a last work that fundamentally reconfigures how we study most other culturesFrom the perspective of Western modernity, humanity inhabits a disenchanted cosmos. Gods, spirits, and ancestors have left us for a transcendent beyond, no longer living in our midst and being involved in all matters of everyday life from the trivial to the dire. Yet the vast majority of cultures throughout human history treat spirits as very real persons, members of a cosmic society who interact with humans and control their fate. In most cultures, even today, people are but a small part of an enchanted universe misconstrued by the transcendent categories of “religion” and the “supernatural.” The New Science of the Enchanted Universe shows how anthropologists and other social scientists must rethink these cultures of immanence and study them by their own lights. In this, his last, revelatory book, Marshall Sahlins announces a new method and sets an exciting agenda for the field. He takes readers around the world, from Inuit of the Arctic Circle to pastoral Dinka of East Africa, from Araweté swidden gardeners of Amazonia to Trobriand Island horticulturalists. In the process, Sahlins sheds new light on classical and contemporary ethnographies that describe these cultures of immanence and reveals how even the apparently mundane, all-too-human spheres of “economics” and “politics” emerge as people negotiate with, and ultimately usurp, the powers of the gods. The New Science of the Enchanted Universe offers a road map for a new practice of anthropology that takes seriously the enchanted universe and its transformations from ancient Mesopotamia to contemporary America

Inuit of northern Canada have a rich oral tradition in their ancient languages and a more recent tradition of written English. Penny Petrone traces the two paths that link the cultural past of arctic peoples with its expression in the present day. The book's first section includes traditional legends, myths, folk history told by native story-tellers, and poetry sung by Inuit composers. The second presents statements and observations by some of the first Inuit to come into contact with European newcomers, including official reports, interviews, letters, and diaries. Next are early poetry and prose in translation, much of it autobiographical. The final section includes contemporary Inuit writing, from essays and speeches to fiction, poetry, and other genres of imaginative literature. The editor has provided an introduction for each item and arranged the material chronologically to give historical perspective and continuity to the whole

There are 1.8 million Indigenous people in Canada, accounting for five percent of the total population. They speak more than seventy languages and represent many different cultures. With recent land claims and the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools, the situation of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis has gained critical attention. Teaching Indigenous Studies, however, is a difficult endeavor, as educators must be knowledgeable and sensitive about Indigenous histories, cultures, traditions, and political issues. Incorporating the latest research in anthropology, ethnography, history, literary and film studies, the chapters in this book focus on current matters such as traditional ways of life, land claims, and self-government, trace cultural changes that resulted from contacts with the Europeans, and discuss the process of reconciliation. Referring to Indigenous perspective in the analysis of cultures and the teaching of these issues, the authors have included many Indigenous voices and sources, and explore the institutions that provide Indigenous communities in Canada with national and international visibility.
