"This book describes how computer programs can generate narratives and how studies of computational narrative can illuminate how humans tell stories. Combining an introduction to relevant concepts related to automatic storytelling with accessible descriptions of well-known computer programs that illustrate how such concepts are employed, the book is aimed at an interdisciplinary audience and assumes little or no background in computer science. The book introduces the most relevant techniques employed over the last 60 years for the development of computer models for narrative generation, including narrative templates, problem-solving, planning, author engagement and reflection, and statistical methods such as deep neural networks, ending with an examination of the societal implications of the development of automatic narrative generator systems."--

"Would you read this book if a computer wrote it? Would you even know? And why would it matter? Today's eerily impressive artificial intelligence writing tools present us with a crucial challenge: As writers, do we unthinkingly adopt AI's time-saving advantages or do we stop to weigh what we gain and lose when heeding their siren call? To understand how AI is redefining what it means to write and think, linguist and educator Naomi Baron leads us on a journey connecting the dots between human literacy and today's technology. From nineteenth century lessons in composition, to mathematician Alan Turing's work creating a machine for deciphering war-time messages, to contemporary engines like ChatGPT, Baron gives readers a spirited overview of the emergence of both literacy and AI, and a glimpse of their possible future. As the technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and fluent, it's tempting to take the easy way out and let AI do the work for us. Baron cautions that such efficiency isn't always in our interest. As AI plies us with suggestions or full-blown text, we risk losing not just our technical skills but the power of writing as a springboard for personal reflection and unique expression. Funny, informed, and conversational, Who Wrote This? urges us as individuals and as communities to make conscious choices about the extent to which we collaborate with AI. The technology is here to stay. Baron shows us how to work with AI and how to spot where it risks diminishing the valuable cognitive and social benefits of being literate"--

In this course, we will cover the different aspects of building and vetting datasets in order to minimize any problems in AI training. We’ll talk about compiling datasets, “fixing” bad or incomplete data, profiling data to find biases, data labeling and annotations, data quality considerations, data privacy and security in the process, and more. We will start by covering how to properly assemble and curate datasets. How to properly vet and catalog the data, how to preprocess them, and how to ensure that we achieve a certain level of data quality from the get-go. Then, we’ll talk about ensuring data quality. How to both put in place policies and rules to ensure that future data are of quality, but also how to remediate data when they are already below the expected quality thresholds. Then, our focus will be on de-biasing data. Even if data seem to objectively be “of quality,” they may still lack variety according to several dimensions, which can cause warped and harmful model outputs. We’ll cover how to tease out—and how to deal with—various types of biases. And, finally, we’ll cover data security and privacy. Because, even if your models don’t harm users, the actual data can. We’ll talk about how to limit access control, how to put in place various security controls of various types, and how to protect Personally Identifiable Information when handling training datasets. All of this so that, at the end of the day, data becomes an accelerator instead of a hurdle in your training efforts.

Companies today are moving rapidly to integrate generative AI into their products and services. But there's a great deal of hype (and misunderstanding) about the impact and promise of this technology. With this book, Chris Fregly, Antje Barth, and Shelbee Eigenbrode from AWS help CTSs, ML practitioners, application developers, business analysts, data engineers, and data scientists find practical ways to use this exciting new technology. You'll learn the generative AI project life cycle including use case definition, model selection, model fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation, reinforcement learning from human feedback, and model quantization, optimization, and deployment. And you'll explore different types of models including large language models (LLMs) and multimodal models such as Stable Diffusion for generating images and Flamingo/IDEFICS for answering questions about images

"AI and Writing is an introduction to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and its emergent role as a tool for academic, professional, civic, and personal writing. Sid Dobrin examines GenAI from two perspectives: the conceptual and the applied. The conceptual approach addresses the function of GenAI and the ramifications of its use as a writing tool-- especially the ethical, social, and material issues it raises. The applied approach offers guidance to assist readers in using GenAI responsibly and authentically." --
