Burial Plots in British Detective Fiction offers an overview of the ways in which the past is brought back to the surface and influences the present in British detective fiction written between 1920 and 2020. Exploring a range of authors including Agatha Christie, Patricia Wentworth, Val McDermid, Sarah Caudwell, Georgette Heyer, Dorothy Dunnett, Jonathan Stroud and Ben Aaronovitch, Lisa Hopkins argues that both the literal and literary disinterment of the past use elements of the national past to interrogate the present. As such, in the texts discussed, uncovering the truth about an individual crime is also typically an uncovering of a more general connection between the present and the past. Whether detective novels explore murders on archaeological digs, hauntings, cold crimes or killings at Christmas, Hopkins explores the underlying message that you cannot understand the present unless you understand the past.

The first book on pan-Caribbean life writing, Dreams of Archives Unfolded reveals the innovative formal practices used to write about historical absences within contemporary personal narratives. Although the premier genres of writing postcoloniality in the Caribbean have been understood to be fiction and poetry, established figures such as Erna Brodber, Maryse Condé, Lorna Goodison, Edwidge Danticat, Saidiya Hartmann, Ruth Behar, and Dionne Brand and emerging writers such as Yvonne Shorter Brown, and Gaiutra Bahadur use life writing to question the relationship between the past and the present. Stitt theorizes that the remarkable flowering of life writing by Caribbean women since 2000 is not an imitation of the "memoir boom" in North America and Europe; instead, it marks a different use of the genre born out of encountering gendered absences in archives and ancestral memory that cannot be filled with more research. Dreams of Archives makes a significant contribution to studies of Caribbean literature by demonstrating that women's autobiographical narratives published in the past twenty years are feminist epistemological projects that rework Caribbean studies' longstanding commitment to creating counter-archives

In a provocative take on Germanic heroic poetry, Taranu reads texts like Beowulf, Maldon, and the Waltharius as participating in alternative modes of history-writing that functioned in a larger ecology of narrative forms, including Latinate Christian history and the biblical epic. These modes employed the conceit of their participating in a tradition of oral verse for a variety of purposes: from political propaganda to constructing origin myths for early medieval nationhood or heroic masculinity, and sometimes for challenging these paradigms. The more complex of these historical visions actively meditated on their own relationship to truthfulness and fictionality while also performing sophisticated (and often subversive) cultural and socio-emotional work for its audiences. By rethinking canonical categories of historiographical discourse from within medieval textual productions, Vernacular Verse Histories in Early Medieval England and Francia: The Bard and the Rag-Picker aims to recover a part of the wide array of narrative poetic forms through which medieval communities made sense of their past and structured their socio-emotional experience

Stitt theorizes that the remarkable flowering of life writing by Caribbean women since 2000 is not an imitation of the “memoir boom” in North America and Europe; instead, it marks a different use of the genre born out of encountering gendered absences in archives and ancestral memory that cannot be filled with more research. Dreams of Archives makes a significant contribution to studies of Caribbean literature by demonstrating that women’s autobiographical narratives published in the past twenty years are feminist epistemological projects that rework Caribbean studies’ longstanding commitment to creating counter-archives

Klappentext: Golden Age departures in historiography and theory of history in some ways prepared the ground for modern historical methods and ideas about historical factuality. At the same time, they fed into the period's own "aesthetic-historical culture" which amalgamated fact and fiction in ways modern historians would consider counterfactual: a culture where imaginative historical prose, poetry and drama self-consciously rivalled the accounts of royal chroniclers and the dispatches of diplomatic envoys; a culture dominated by a notion of truth in which skilful construction of the argument and exemplarity took precedence over factual accuracy. Literature and Historiography in the Spanish Golden Age: The Poetics of History investigates this grey area backdrop of modern ideas about history, delving into a variety of Golden Age aesthetic-historical works which cannot be satisfactorily described as either works of literature or works of historiography but which belong in between these later strictly separate categories. Theory of drama -- Historical drama.

Frontmatter -- Danksagung -- Inhaltsverzeichnis -- 1 Einleitung -- 2 Erinnerung in grafischer Literatur -- 3 Analysen -- 4 Schlussbetrachtungen -- Abbildungsverzeichnis -- Literaturverzeichnis -- Register How do comics approach the memory of the Shoah? And how does a new generation of authors, too young to remember the Holocaust, express their memory in panels, images and speech bubbles? This study offers an original theory of comics as a medium of cultural memory based on the most important works of the past two decades, and explains what makes this genre so fascinating for memory studies Wie erinnern künftige Generationen an die Shoah, wenn die letzten Zeitzeugen gestorben sind? How will future generations commemorate the Holocaust when the last eyewitnesses have died? Comic books published in the past few years suggest that: while the children are still trying to understand--and emancipate themselves from--their parents' past, the generation of the grandchildren is keenly aware of the fact that everything they know about the Holocaust is passed on to them or is conveyed through the media. Comic book authors from the grandchildren's generation frame the events of the Holocaust either by positioning themselves as historical narrators, or by setting their plots in the present, where the Holocaust is only manifest through traces and consequences. By doing so, they bring the past to bear on the present, implicitly criticizing representations that keep the Holocaust at a distance. Recent comics, in other words, no longer narrate the Holocaust as a supposedly distant past, but rather explore its effects and parallels in the present. This allows them to perpetuate the memory of the Holocaust for generations who no longer have a personal connection to it, and in this way, to do important work against oblivion. By comparing comic books by authors from both the children's and the grandchildren's generation, such as Michel Kichka, Bernice Eisenstein, Rutu Modan, Barbara Yelin and Reinhard Kleist, this book shows that panels, images, and speech bubbles can help those too young to experience or commemorate the Holocaust come to terms with what had happened."--Publisher's website
