    Auf das Leben eines kleinen Jungen hat sich das, was man damals in den letzten Kriegsjahren als die „Heimatfront“ bezeichnete, oft sehr gravierend und nachdrücklich ausgewirkt. Nicht nur, dass sich in seinem Heimatdorf Kriegshandlungen abgespielt haben und es dadurch auch Tote gegeben hat, wie z.B. bei den Angriffen der amerikanischen Jagdbomber auf die Personenzüge, beim Absturz der abgeschossenen Flugzeuge oder bei der Zerstörung eines Panzers beim Einrücken der Amerikaner ins Dorf, sondern auch dadurch, dass die Kühe aus einem von Bomben zerstörten Bauernhof im Keller seiner Schule untergebracht werden mussten, weil es sonst keinen Platz für sie gab. Auch als die Rückwanderer aus Lothringen mit ihren Tierherden durch das Dorf zogen, waren das direkte Auswirkungen und Folgen des Krieges, genauso wie die Einquartierungen in Großvaters Bauernhof oder die „Weihnachtsbäumchen“ am nächtlichen Himmel. Als der Vater schwer verwundet aus Russland nach Hause kommt, ist das ein einschneidendes Erlebnis für ihn und diese Verwundung hat Folgen für ihr weiteres gemeinsames Leben. Doch nicht nur die Auswirkungen des Krieges bestimmten damals das Leben des kleinen Jungen sondern auch seine Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen auf dem Bauernhof, in der kleinen Dorfschule, mit den Tieren in seiner Umgebung und in der Familie

    Die Katastrophe des Ersten Weltkriegs zeigt sich erst dann umfassend, wenn die engen Verschränkungen zwischen "Front" und "Heimatfront" als Voraussetzung moderner Kriegsführung berücksichtigt werden. Auf der Basis einer großen Bandbreite von Selbstzeugnissen macht das Buch die Militarisierung der gesamten Gesellschaft - von Männern wie von Frauen und Kindern - sowie verschiedene Kriegsalltage und Gewalterfahrungen sichtbar. Es handelt von k. u. k. Mannschaftssoldaten und Offizieren ebenso wie von Armeeschwestern und Rotkreuzhelferinnen, den "Liebesgaben" für die Soldaten herstellenden Schulmädchen und in der "Kriegsfürsorge" engagierten Frauen.

Auf der Basis einer großen Bandbreite von Selbstzeugnissen macht das Buch die Militarisierung der gesamten Gesellschaft - von Männern wie von Frauen und Kindern - sowie verschiedene Kriegsalltage und Gewalterfahrungen sichtbar. Es handelt von k. u. k. Mannschaftssoldaten und Offizieren ebenso wie von Armeeschwestern und Rotkreuzhelferinnen, den "Liebesgaben" für die Soldaten herstellenden Schulmädchen und in der "Kriegsfürsorge" engagierten Frauen.
