    Bilder der Christophanie, die den auferstandenen Christus vor seinen Jünger:innen zeigen, sind oftmals komplex strukturiert und irritieren durch widersprüchliche Sehangebote und Aussagen. Die Ambiguität dieser Darstellungen wurde von der kunsthistorischen Forschung lange Zeit unterschätzt oder gänzlich ignoriert. Dies resultierte aus der traditionellen Methode der ikonographischen Interpretationspraxis, christliche Bildinhalte möglichst eindeutig zu bestimmen. Motivische Widersprüchlichkeiten wurden in diesem Sinne zumeist als Ausnahmen disqualifiziert, auf pragmatische Gründe zurückgeführt oder als künstlerische Fehler abgetan. Im Buch wird anhand mehrerer Fallbeispiele aus der Zeit der Spätantike und des frühen Mittelalters dargelegt, dass diese Sicht der immanenten Logik vieler prominenter Christusbilder nicht gerecht wird. Dagegen wird aufgezeigt, dass die Bild-Ambiguitäten von den Produzenten mit großem konzeptuellem Kalkül in Szene gesetzt wurden und im Rahmen eines christlichen Bekehrungs-Diskurses zu verstehen sind, bei dem Momente der Liminalität - die kognitive Verwirrung, der Glaubenszweifel und die innere Wandlung - eine entscheidende Rolle spielen

    Jerusalem - earthly and heavenly, past, present and future - has always informed the Christian imagination: it is the intersection of the divine and human worlds, of time and eternity. Since the fourth century, it has been the site of the round Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built over the empty tomb acknowledged by Constantine as the tomb of Christ. Nearly four hundred years later, the Sepulchre's rotunda was rivalled by the octagon of the Dome of the Rock. The city itself and these two glorious buildings within it remain, to this day, the focus of pilgrimage and of intense devotion.Jerusalem and its numinous buildings have been distinctively re-imagined and re-presented in the design, topography, decoration and dedications of some very striking and beautiful churches and cities in Western Europe, Russia, the Caucasus and Ethiopia. Some are famous, others are in the West almost unknown. The essays In this richly illustrated book combine to do justice to these evocative buildings' architecture, roles and history. The volume begins with an introduction to the Sepulchre itself, from its construction under Constantine to the Crusaders' rebuilding which survives to this day. Chapters follow on the Dome of the Rock and on the later depiction and signifcance of the Jewish Temple. The essays then move further afeld, uncovering the links between Jerusalem and Byzantium, the Caucasus, Russia and Ethiopia. Northern Europe comes fnally into focus, with chapters on Charlemagne's chapel at Aachen, the role of the military orders in spreading the form of the Sepulchre, a gazetteer of English rounds, and studies of London's New Temple.

    À la fin du Moyen Âge, un type de monument nouveau vient prendre place dans l'église: à l'intérieur d'un riche édicule architectural une véritable mise en scène montre le Christ mort étendu sur son tombeau et les saintes Femmes venues embaumer son corps. C'est ce qu'on appelle le saint sépulcre, dont la forme générale semble se constituer au cours du deuxième quart du xive siècle, mais sa diffusion géographique est limitée au bassin supérieur du Rhin - surtout en Alsace - et à la Souabe. On ne peut comprendre l'importance de ces saints sépulcres monumentaux que si on les replace dans le contexte de la dévotion eucharistique et du culte lié à la Passion, même à la liturgie du temps de Pâques. L'auteur du présent ouvrage a procédé à une étude rigoureuse des œuvres conservées, parvenant grâce à sa sagacité à reconstituer celles qui sont aujourd'hui ruinées, en particulier la plus importante création des années 1340, le saint sépulcre de la cathédrale de Strasbourg qui est peut-être le prototype de tous les autres. Sylvie Aballéa a entrepris l'étude de toutes les sources d'archives, elle a examiné l'authenticité des documents et elle est parvenue à établir un panorama remarquablement documenté et passionnant par ses implications pour l'histoire de l'art, bien sûr, mais aussi pour l'histoire des mentalités religieuses au cours du Moyen Âge finissant. Exemplaire par sa méthode, ce livre, enrichi par de nombreuses illustrations inédites, ouvre aussi des perspectives toutes nouvelles sur la fonction des saints sépulcres monumentaux, sur leurs commanditaires et leur conception d'une image de dévotion monumentale.
