    From Parchment to Cyberspace argues the case for studying high-resolution digital images of original manuscripts to analyze medieval literature. By presenting a rigorous philosophical argument for the authenticity of such images (a point disputed by digital skeptics) the book illustrates how digitization offers scholars innovative methods for comparing manuscripts of vernacular literature – such as The Romance of the Rose or texts by Christine de Pizan – that reveal aspects of medieval culture crucial to understanding the period. «Overall, From Parchment to Cyberspace is a valuable (and, I might add, extravagantly illustrated) contribution to the growing critical conversation on the digitization of medieval manuscripts. Its unusual structure makes it an intriguing resource for teaching as well: individual chapters might teach well as standalone texts. Grundlegende quellenkundliche und überlieferungsgeschichtliche Untersuchungen nehmen Formen, Funktionen und Rezeption einer Textgruppe in den Blick, die in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen Historiografie und Verwaltungsschriftlichkeit verortet wird. Anknüpfend an die vergleichende Hofforschung werden Fallbeispiele aus dem Herzogtum Burgund und süddeutschen Fürstenhöfen, vornehmlich der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts, betrachtet.
    Besonderes Augenmerk gilt den literarisch-technischen Aspekten der Texterstellung bzw. Kompilation und in einem zweiten Schritt der Rezeptionsgeschichte und Refunktionalisierung der Festberichte im Rahmen der réécriture. Dazu werden sowohl das Verhältnis einzelner Textzeugen oder Fassungen zueinander als auch Verbindungen zwischen mehreren Schilderungen desselben Ereignisses untersucht. Das etablierte Instrumentarium der Historiografiegeschichte wird für die Beantwortung dieser Fragen um philologische und narratologische Methoden erweitert. Die in den Literaturwissenschaften breit ausdifferenzierte Methodik der Narratologie wird dabei erstmalig für die Untersuchung im weitesten Sinne historiografischer vormoderner Texte adaptiert.
    Charakteristika der Festberichte verschiedener historiografischer und literarischer Traditionen werden herausgearbeitet und so die spezifische Schriftlichkeit einzelner Höfe zum Thema vergleichender Hofforschung. Ihre große Spannbreite von idealtypischen faktualen Erzähltexten bis zu fast seriellen Schilderungen von Orten, Personen und Handlungen zeigte, dass die Narrativität kein konstitutives, sondern vielmehr ein graduell zu bestimmendes Merkmal der betrachteten Texte ist. Die quellenkundlich bislang getrennt betrachteten Textgruppen der vor einem Fest erstellten präskriptiven Festordnungen und der nach einem Ereignis erstellten deskriptiven Berichte konnten in vielen Fällen als Ausprägungen eines einzigen Texts veranschaulicht werden. Dieser Funktionswandel in der Rezeption der Texte ließ sich bidirektional beobachten. Auch die Übergänge von serieller listenartiger Beschreibung bis zu rhetorisch-stilistisch und literarisch anspruchsvoller Prosa erwiesen sich als fließend.
