    Taking the culturally resonant motif of the descent to the underworld as his guiding thread, David L. Pike traces the interplay between myth and history in medieval and modernist literature. Passage through Hell suggests new approaches to the practice of comparative literature, and a possible escape from the current morass of competing critical schools and ideologies.Pike's readings of Louis Ferdinand Céline and Walter Benjamin reveal the tensions at work in the modern appropriation of structures derived from ancient and medieval descents. His book shows how these structures were redefined in modernism and persist in contemporary critical practice. In order to recover the historical corpus of modernism, he asserts, it is necessary to acknowledge the attraction that medieval forms and motifs held for modernist literature and theory. By pairing the writings of the postwar German dramatist and novelist Peter Weiss with Dante's Commedia, and Christine de Pizan with Virginia Woolf, Pike argues for a new level of complexity in the relation between medieval and modern poetics.Pike's supple and persuasive reading of the Commedia resituates that text within the contradictions of medieval tradition. He contends that the Dantean allegory of conversion, altered to suit the exigencies of modernism, maintains its hold over current literature and theory. The postwar writers Pike treats-Weiss, Seamus Heaney, and Derek Walcott-exemplify alternate strategies for negotiating the legacy of modernism.     Das Alte Testament erzählt von Gründungsmythen, die das anfängliche Chaos bändigen, Recht und Ordnung schaffen und somit den Menschen und die ihn umgebende Welt verändern. Thomas Mann erzählt diese Mythen neu, spart hierbei jedoch Gott als Handelnden aus und legt den Kern dieser Ordnung frei: Gewalt.

    Was sind die Bedingungen von Ordnung, Recht und Gesetz? Wie entsteht aus dem Chaos, aus dem anfänglichen biblischen Tohuwabohu eine geordnete Welt, in der der Mensch seinen Platz als Individuum im Angesicht Gottes behauptet? Und was ist der Preis, der hierfür zu zahlen ist? Diese Fragen stellt Thomas Mann in seinem ›alttestamentarischen Werk‹, dem vierbändigen Josephroman (1926-1943) und der Erzählung »Das Gesetz« (1943). In dieser Arbeit, die beide Werke erstmals unter einer gemeinsamen Fragestellung betrachtet, werden Schlüsselszenen einem close reading unterzogen, die biblische Gründungsmythen (u.a. Kain und Abel, Exodus, die Zehn Gebote) neu erzählen, die Sinn und Ordnung in das Chaos bringen, dies jedoch stets vor dem Hintergrund zum Teil drastischer Gewaltakte. Indem hierbei ausnahmslos der Mensch und nicht Gott als Handelnder auftritt, wird gleichzeitig eine alternative Lesart des Alten Testaments präsentiert.

    Doctoral Thesis

    Mit dem Siegeszug des Christentums war der Kosmos der antiken Mythologie nicht obsolet geworden. Er lebte fort in den Bildungstraditionen. Um das unterirdische Totenreich entstand dabei ein besonderer Diskurs. Das mythische Szenario hatte mit seinen archaischen Jenseitsvorstellungen schon in der Antike eine übertragene philosophisch-psychologische Deutung provoziert, die sich insbesondere an Vergils Aeneis anschließen konnte. Vermittelt durch die spätantike Dichterkommentierung, diente die allegorische Hermeneutik manchen karolingischen Literaten vor allem zur Rechtfertigung der Mythenlektüre. Spätere Exegeten entwickelten sie schließlich zu einer genuin mittelalterlichen Lesart fort, die den Elementen des Unterweltszenarios ihre jeweils eigene Bedeutsamkeit zuwies. Weit über eine bloße Analogie zur Hölle hinaus wurde so das mythologische «Infernum» als universeller literarischer Verhandlungsort für die Bedingungen menschlichen Daseins etabliert - eine Entwicklung, die diese Untersuchung anhand von Zeugnissen aus Dichtung und paratextueller Überlieferung bis hin zu ihrem Abschluss in Dantes Commedia nachvollzieht

    Dem Mythos zufolge spiegelt sich in der Topografie der Unterwelt die Lebenswirklichkeit als Negativität. Die Totenwelt hat seit alters literarisches Leben gezeugt, in eigentümllich konzentrierter Form gerade auch in der literarischen Moderne – zwischen Décadence und Vitalismus. Diese Studie verwörtlicht Nietzsches These von der Kunst als einer »Todtenbeschwörerin«. Sie fragt nach der Bedeutung des Hades als Kernmotiv der literarischen Moderne, begleitet von bildlichen Figurationen des Styx als einem poetologischen Topos. Auch in transkulturellen Zusammenhängen ist diese Bildlichkeit bedeutsam. An exemplarischen Beispielen in Texten von Theodor Däubler, Else Lasker-Schüler, H. v. Hofmannsthal, Virginia Woolf und Robert Musil, Kafka und Döblin, T.S. Eliot wie auch Rilke bis hin zu Ingeborg Bachmann wird diese Topografie motivgeschichtlich und in ihrer figurativen Bedeutsamkeit untersucht.
