This double-bind between comical entertainment and more sinister features makes it a cardinal instance of a modern aesthetic that upgraded ugliness in the form of grotesquerie to the status of a guarantor of aesthetic pleasure. Accordingly, this analysis of the theatrical qualities of mute body-play is closely bound up with the contemplation of coeval European discourse on the transcendence of aesthetic frontiers. This applies both to the problems posed by this phenomenon and above all to its potential performative effect

Introduction : Sherwood Anderson's place in a millennial canon -- Anderson's grotesques : personal subjugation and the indeterminacy of meaning in a hostile world -- The early novels : establishing the horizon for Winesburg -- Getting the thing needed : the modern grotesque in Winesburg, Ohio -- Epilogue : beyond the grotesques

"Sherwood Anderson, remembered chiefly as a writer of short stories about life in the Midwest at the turn of the century, was acknowledged as an innovator of the short story form and a major influence on such writers as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Valuable critical studies have examined his works from biographical, New Critical, or psychoanalytical approaches, but contemporary criticism on Anderson has been nearly nonexistent." "A New Book of the Grotesques (the title is adapted from the first tale in Winesburg, Ohio) does not challenge previous studies of Anderson as much as it looks at Anderson's early fiction from contemporary interpretative methodologies, particularly from poststructuralist approaches. With this study, author Robert Dunne breaks new ground in Sherwood Anderson scholarship: his is the first sustained, full-length critical work on Anderson from a postmodern theoretical perspective and is the first study of a substantial body of Anderson's work to be published in more than thirty years."--BOOK JACKET.

This study fills a major gap of Carter's reception and enters into dialogue with current post-semiotical theories of the embodied subject by virtue of focusing on the dynamics of the meaning-in-process concomitant with the subject-in-process (Kristeva 1985) and the body-in-process. Through a corporeal narratological method--a close-reading interfacing of semioticized bodies in the text and of the somatized text on the body--I decipher how the ideologically disciplined, normativized-neutralized, 'cultural' body and its repressed yet haunting transgressive, corporeal, material 'reality' (are) (de)

Chinese strange tale collections contain short stories about ghosts and animal spirits, supra-human heroes and freaks, exotic lands and haunted homes, earthquake and floods, and other perceived "anomalies" to accepted cosmic and social norms. As such, this body of literature is a rich repository of Chinese myths, folklore, and unofficial "histories". These collections also reflect Chinese attitudes towards normalcy and strangeness, perceptions of civilization and barbarism, and fantasies about self and other. Inspired in part by Freud's theory of the uncanny, this book explores the emotive subtexts of late imperial strange tale collections to consider what these stories tell us about suppressed cultural anxieties, the construction of gender, and authorial self-identity

Gothic elements in English-Canadian fiction have generally been regarded as idiosyncratic outcroppings, or, in French-Canadian novels, as a temporary phenomenon rather than as part of a recurring Canadian pattern. By analysing a number of Canadian works of fiction from the nineteenth century to the present, Margot Northey demonstrates that Gothicism, in varying degrees and of various kinds, has been a continuing feature of our fiction. She uses ‘gothic’ to refer to a subjective view of the dark side of life, seen through the distorting mirror of the self with its submerged levels of psychic and spiritual experiences. The gothic is essentially symbolic in its approach and its mood is pre-eminently one of terror or horror. ‘Grotesque,’ frequently used in conjunction with ‘gothic,’ is take as an aesthetic term, referring to a mode of writing emphasizing incongruity, disorder, and deformity. It arises from the juxtaposition or clash of the ideal with the real, the psychic with the physical, or the concrete with the symbolic. Detailed treatment is given to a limited number of works, some from the nineteenth century, some from the twentieth, and the focus is on varieties of gothic and grotesque fiction rather than on specific authors. The Haunted Wilderness is a fascinating and original contribution to Canadian comparative studies and to genre-oriented criticism

The thesis of A Gorgon's mask: The Mother in Thomas Mann's Fiction depends upon three psychoanalytic concepts: Freud's early work on the relationship between the infant and its mother and on the psychology of artistic creation, Annie Reich's analysis of the grotesque-comic sublimation, and Edmund Bergler's analysis of writer's block. Mann's crisis of sexual anxiety in late adolescence is presented as the defining moment for his entire artistic life. In the throes of that crisis he included a sketch of a female as Gorgon in a book that would not escape his mother's notice. But to defend himself
