    We challenge the common practice of estimating gravity equations with time-interval data in order to capture dynamic-adjustment effects to trade-policy changes. Instead, we point to a series of advantages of using consecutive-year data recognizing dynamic-adjustment effects. Our analysis reveals that, relative to time-interval data, the proposed approach avoids downward-biased effect estimates due to the distribution of trade-policy events during an event window as well as due to anticipation (pre-interval) and delayed (post-interval) effects, and it improves the efficiency of effect estimates due to the use of more data.

    People are emotional about places. I study the effect of regional identity (\at home") on internal migration ows in Germany between 1995 and 2017. Regional identity is proxied by measuring how NUTS3 regions were historically affiliated in the former patchwork of Germany. When controlling for the in uence of distance, culture (mea- sured by dialects) and regional characteristics, I confirm that regional identity drives migration patterns additionally. Employing the separation effect by the German wall affirms that not only earlier migration or family bonds determine movements instead of regional identity.

    Diese Studie befasst sich mit der Quantifizierung der ökonomischen Auswirkungen des Austritts des Vereinigten Königreichs (VK) aus der Europäischen Union (EU) ("Brexit") auf die deutsche und europäische Wirtschaft. Seit dem Brexit-Referendum vom 23. Juni 2016 herrscht über die Zukunft der wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen dem VK und der EU ein hohes Maß an Unsicherheit, das bereits vor dem Vollzug des Austritts Effekte auf ökonomische Variablen hat.     This paper provides a method to construct simultaneous confidence bands for quantile functions and quantile effects in nonlinear network and panel models with unobserved two-way effects, strictly exogenous covariates, and possibly discrete outcome variables. The method is based upon projection of simultaneous confidence bands for distribution functions constructed from fixed effects distribution regression estimators. These fixed effects estimators are debiased to deal with the incidental parameter problem. Under asymptotic sequences where both dimensions of the data set grow at the same rate, the confidence bands for the quantile functions and effects have correct joint coverage in large samples. An empirical application to gravity models of trade illustrates the applicability of the methods to network data.

    Political debates and economic analyses often focus on single free trade agreements and their potential economic effects on participating trading partners. This study contributes to the literature by shedding light on the significance of trade agreements in the context of countries' positions in worldwide trade agreement networks, by combining network theory with gravity trade modelling. We illustrate, both numerically and graphically, the evolution of the global web of trade agreements in general, and the network of the European Union specifically, accounting for the geographical and temporal change in the depth of agreements implemented. Gravity estimations for the period 1995-2017 distinguish the direct bilateral effects of trade agreements from indirect effects attributable to the scope of trade networks and countries' positions therein.

    Die Studie befasst sich mit den Auswirkungen der Russland-Sanktionen auf den Außenhandel und die Wertschöpfung Deutschlands, Russlands und der Europäischen Union (EU). Neben einer deskriptiven Analyse werden mithilfe ökonometrischer Methoden die Effekte der verschiedenen Sanktionsregime (EU, Russland, USA) auf den bilateralen Handel mit Russland geschätzt. Die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden in eine Simulationsanalyse gespeist, um die Wohlfahrtskosten nach Ländern, Regionen und Sektoren zu bestimmen. Eine Unternehmensbefragung ergänzt die Studie um qualitative Aspekte, mit denen die Betroffenheit deutscher Unternehmen durch die Sanktionen ergänzt werden kann.
