Eine Theorie der Prosa existiert nicht, wird hier jedoch erstmals in Angriff genommen, indem die Theoriegeschichte der Ästhetik von Baumgarten bis Hegel analysiert wird, um eine ›Idee der Prosa‹ zu gewinnen. Es gibt in der fortgeschrittenen Prosa (z.B. Jean Paul, Arno Schmidt) eine ästhetische Verdichtung, die nicht aus Form resultiert. Prosa wird, Benjamin und Agamben folgend, als Reflexionsmedium und Erfüllungsgegenstand von Form verstanden. Entsprechend liegt bei Baumgarten, Herder, Moritz, Kant, Schiller und Jean Paul vor der Form eine rhetorisch gedachte Aisthesis, die in der Form gebündelt werden soll, diese aber zugleich übersteigt. In der Frühromantik und bei Hegel dient eine ›prosaische‹ Theorie des Selbstbewusstseins als Matrix für einen analogen Prozess. Das vorliegende Buch versteht sich als Propädeutik für eine zukünftige Theorie der Prosa, wobei Jean Pauls »Vorschule der Ästhetik« als der Text gelesen wird, der sich auf dem Weg von der Idee der Prosa zu ihrer Theorie befindet
