    This paper revisits the Kareken-Wallace model of exchange rate formation in a two-country overlapping generations world. Following the seminal paper by Arifovic (Journal of Political Economy, 104, 1996, 510 - 541) we investigate a dynamic version of the model in which agents' decision rules are updated using genetic algorithms. Our main interest is in whether the equilibrium dynamics resulting from this learning process helps to explain the main stylized facts of free-floating exchange rates (unit roots in levels together with fat tails in returns and volatility clustering). Our time series analysis of simulated data indicates that for particular parameterizations, the characteristics of the exchange rate dynamics are, in fact, very similar to those of empirical data. The similarity appears to be quite insensitive with respect to some of the ingredients of the GA algorithm (i.e. utility-based versus rank-based or tournament selection, binary or real coding). However, appearance or not of realistic time series characteristics depends crucially on the mutation probability (which should be low) and the number of agents (not more than about 1000). With a larger population, this collective learning dynamics looses its realistic appearance and instead exhibits regular periodic oscillations of the agents'y choice variables.

    In this paper the genetic algorithm is described, applications in the field of statistics are indicated and it is applied to the estimation of the parameters of a Johnson-type distribution. The convergence behaviour is analyzed with respect to the mutation probability, the kind of mutations and the fitness criterion chosen. Finally the algorithm and its behaviour is visualized with S-plus. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird der Genetischer Algorithmus dargestellt, Anwendungsfelder in der Statistik skizziert und auf die Schätzung der Parameter einer Johnson-Verteilung angewandt. Hierbei wird das Konvergenzverhalten dieser Algorithmen in Abhängigkeit von der Mutationswahrscheinlichkeit, der durchschnittlichen Schrittweite bei Mutationen und der Wahl der Fitness-Funktion untersucht. Schließlich findet eine Visualisierung des Genetischen Algorithmus und seines Verhaltens unter Verwendung des Programmpaketes S-Plus statt.

    Replicator dynamics and replication as used in evolutionary algorithms are, due to their most basic forms, structurally the same. This short note will prove this thesis. Although this finding is clear cut and easy to show, it is of great importance for the not yet united families of game theorists on the one hand and evolutionary programmers on the other, meaning that it is perfectly legal and correct to mutually use the tools and findings of each other. Replikatordynamik und die Replikation evolutionärer Algorithmen sind in ihren einfachsten Formen strukturell equivalent. Diese kurze Bemerkung beweist die obige Behauptug. Obwohl die Aussage einfach und leicht zu demonstrieren ist, ist sie nichtsdestoweniger von größter Bedeutung für die noch nicht vereinten Familien der Spieltheoretiker einerseits und Evolutionsprogrammierer andererseits. Das Papier besagt, dass es völlig legal und korrekt ist, sich in der Forschung wechselseitig auf die Methoden und Ergebnisse der jeweils anderen Gruppe zu stützen.

    This paper explores the question whether boundedly rational agents learn to behave optimally when asked to voluntarily contribute to a public good. The decision process of individuals is described by an Evolutionary Algorithm. We analyze the learning process of purely and impurely altruistic agents and find that in both cases the contribution level converges towards the Nash equilibrium although, with pure altruism, exact free rider-behavior is never observed. The latter result corresponds to findings from experiments on voluntary contribution to a public good. Crucial determinants of the learning process are the population size and the propensity to experiment.
