    Central to Ovid's elegiac texts and his Metamorphoses is his preoccupation with how desiring subjects interact and seduce each other. This major study, which shifts the focus in Ovidian criticism from intertextuality to intersubjectivity, explores the relationship between self and other, and in particular that between male and female worlds, which is at the heart of Ovid's vision of poetry and the imagination. A series of close readings, focusing on both the more celebrated and less studied parts of the corpus, moves beyond the more often-asked questions of Ovid, such as whether he is 'for' or 'against' women, in order to explore how gendered subjects converse, compete and co-create. It illustrates how the tale of Medusa, alongside that of Narcissus, reverberates throughout Ovid's oeuvre, becoming a fundamental myth for his poetics. This book offers a compelling, often troubling portrait of Ovid that will appeal to classicists and all those interested in gender and difference

    Im 48. Kapitel von Robert Musils "Mann ohne Eigenschaften" lesen wir folgende Beschreibung des deutschen Finanzmagnaten und 'Großschriftstellers' Paul Arnheim: "Die Ausflüge in Gebiete der Wissenschaften, die er unternahm, um seine allgemeinen Auffassungen zu stützen, genügten freilich nicht immer den strengsten Anforderungen. Sie zeigten wohl ein spielendes Verfügen über eine große Belesenheit, aber der Fachmann fand unweigerlich in ihnen jene kleinen Unrichtigkeiten und Mißverständnisse, an denen man eine Dilettantenarbeit so genau erkennen kann, wie sich schon an der Naht ein Kleid, das von der Hausschneiderin gemacht ist, von einem unterscheiden läßt, das aus einem richtigen Atelier stammt. Nur darf man durchaus nicht glauben, daß das Fachleute hinderte, Arnheim zu bewundern." Auch wenn es so scheinen mag, als werde mit diesem Zitat der Rahmen der romantischen Schöpfungsästhetik gesprengt: Hier klingen einige Leitmotive nach, die 'um 1800' die Auseinandersetzung um den 'wahren Künstler' bestimmen. So könnte man fragen, ob der Großschriftsteller Arnheim in der zitierten Passage nicht nur als Dilettant, sondern auch als Virtuose markiert .wird. Als dilettantischer Nicht-Fachmann genügt er nicht immer den "strengsten Anforderungen", zeichnet sich aber durch ein "spielendes Verfügen" über sein angelesenes Wissen aus. Deutet der Umstand, dass ihn die Fachleute bewundern, darauf hin, dass Arnheims "spielendes Verfügen" als virtuose Verbindungsgabe Ansehen findet, auch wenn die Nahtstellen die Dilettantenarbeit erkennen lassen? Und warum wird die Dilettantenarbeit mit der Naht der Hausschneiderin in Analogie gesetzt? Ganz abgesehen davon, dass mit der Maßschneiderei generell das Problem der Angemessenheit aufgeworfen wird: Warum sollte die Hausschneiderin schlechter nähen als das richtige Atelier?
