"The book is an investigation into the ways in which ideas of place are negotiated, contested and refigured in environmental writing at the turn of the twenty-first century. It focuses on the notion of place as a way of interrogating the socio-political and environmental pressures that have been seen as negatively affecting our environments since the advent of modernity, as well as the solutions that have been given as an antidote to those pressures. Examining a selection of literary representations of place from across the globe, the book illuminates the multilayered and polyvocal ways in which literary works render local and global ecological relations of places. In this way, it problematizes more traditional environmentalism and its somewhat essentialised idea of place by intersecting the largely Western discourse of environmental studies with postcolonial and Indigenous studies, thus considering the ways in which forms of emplacement can occur within displacement and dispossession, especially within societies that are dealing with the legacies of colonialism, neocolonial exploitation, or international pressure to conform. As such, the work foregrounds the singular processes in which different local/global communities recognise themselves in their diverse approaches to the environment, and gestures towards an environmental politics that is based on an epistemology of contact, connection and difference, and as one, moreover, that recognises its own epistemological limits. This book will appeal to researchers working in the fields of the environmental humanities, postcolonial studies, indigenous studies and comparative literature"--

"Empire and Environment argues that histories of imperialism, colonialism, militarism, and global capitalism are integral to understanding environmental violence in the transpacific region. The collection draws its rationale from the imbrication of imperialism and global environmental crisis, but its inspiration from the ecological work of activists, artists, and intellectuals across the transpacific region. Taking a postcolonial, ecocritical approach to confronting ecological ruin in an age of ecological crises and environmental catastrophes on a global scale, the collection demonstrates how Asian North American, Asian diasporic, and Indigenous Pacific Island cultural expressions critique a de-historicized sense of place, attachment, and belonging. In addition to its thirteen body chapters from scholars who span the Pacific, each part of this volume begins with a poem by Craig Santos Perez. The volume also features a foreword by Macarena Gómez-Barris and an afterword by Priscilla Wald"--

"Examines the growing prominence within Chinese-language literature of ecological perspectives from China's border cultures. Drawing on eco-literature by Mongolian, Tibetan, Taiwanese Indigenous, Yi, Kazakh, Uyghur, and Han writers, Visser argues that while Beijing promotes China's harmonious ecological civilization, it also strategically appropriates indigenous perspectives in eco-literature to strengthen control over its population. Some of the texts under consideration are little known, particularly those from Xinjiang, but many are widely popular and studied, like the 2004 novel Wolf Totem, which has been translated into more than 30 languages, or Alai's Red Poppies, arguably the best-known Chinese-language novel by a Tibetan writer"--

"Using an innovative multidisciplinary approach which is deeply invested in posthumanist thought, this book demonstrates how reading science fiction shapes the way we engage with lived environments. In dialogue with works by widely studied science fiction authors Greg Bear, N.K. Jemisin, Paolo Bacigalupi, and Jeff VanderMeer, it draws out how they function as mutant narratives. The first to systematically integrate three fields - feminist posthumanism, cognitive narratology, and science fiction studies - this book offers a complex and coherent understanding of readerly experience as material, embodied, dynamic, and imaginative"--

Ecocriticism as a theoretical model has primarily been used in the study of Romantic, post-Romantic, and contemporary literary texts. Applications of the concepts of ecocriticism to medieval literature, however, are a fairly recent phenomenon. This book examines key, canonical works from medieval Spain with an eye to authors' depictions, realistic and symbolic, of their natural surroundings. It shows how descriptions of the natural world in these texts are informed by both the authors' perceptions of the environment and established literary models

"T. S. Eliot enjoyed a profound relationship with Earth. Etienne Terblanche demonstrates that Eliot presents Earth as a process in which humans immerse themselves. The Waste Land and Four Quartets in particular re-locate the modern reader towards mindfulness of Earth's continuation as a process in which one participates. These findings, based on careful reading of the poems, allows the book to venture into ecocritical terrain, focusing on the recent advent of new materialism as a microcosm of the ecocriticism, building on and/or critiquing the work of Edward Said, Jacques Derrida, Gary Snyder, Jane Bennett, and others. Here the argument delves into important questions about the relative crisis within ecocriticism to which Eliot's poetry may well give a certain direction. His poetry uses indirectness and skepticism as avenues into directness and affirmation of earthly being and non-being, speaking to the ways in which new materialism places ecocriticism between fairly drastic material skepticism based on the linguistic and affirmation of earthly agency. Should new materialism continue to clamor towards the linguistic turn? Should it perpetuate the twin legacies of culture studies that avoid actual analysis in response to the real presence of great art and poststructuralist infinite differentiation that undermines not only real poetic presence, but also that of an agentic Earth? The argument seeks answers to these questions from the eco-logos of Eliot's poems, that is, the way in which they orient themselves within Earth's remarkably continuing process. It concludes that his poetic project marks an illuminating instance of the continuing bond between meaningfulness and the primacy of humanity's connections with Earth, providing impetus to ecocriticism's way forward" ...
