"Controversial poetry played a crucial role in dealing with religious, political, and scholarly conflicts from 1400 until 1625. This volume analyses roles and functions of Latin, Italian, Dutch, German, Scots, and Hungarian poetry in specific historical controversies. A media theory of poetical impact is proposed by Franz-Josef Holznagel and Dieuwke van der Poel. Levente Seláf, Philipp Steinkamp, and Guillaume van Gemert examine the genres sung in wars, and in rulers' controversies. Judith Kessler, Dirk Coigneau, Juliette Groenland, and Regina Töpfer analyse how female and male rhetoricians and humanists use verse in religious, municipal, and educational conflicts. Signe Rotter-Broman, Samuel Pakucs Willcocks, and Alasdair MacDonald explain how reception strategies can shape cultural and political identities."--

"In the thirteenth century Dogen brought Zen to Japan. His tradition flourishes there still today and now has taken root across the world. Abruptly Dogen presents some of his pith writings - startling, shifting, funny, spilling out in every direction. They come from all seventy-five chapters of his masterwork, the Eye of Real Dharma (Shōbōgenzō), and roam through mountains, magic, everyday life, meditation, the nature of mind, and how the Buddha is always speaking from inside our heads"--Page 4 of cover

Preliminary Material -- Introduction—The Double Voice -- 1 A Brocade of Words: Theories of Poetic Imitation -- 2 The Reciprocal Origins of Pentasyllabic Verse and of Imitation Poetry -- 3 Impersonation and the Art of Authorship -- 4 Echoing through the Rafters: The Afterlife of Jian’an -- 5 Self-Portrait as Sea Anemone, and Other Impersonations of Jiang Yan -- 6 Jiang Yan’s Allusive and Illusive Journeys -- 7 Pathways in Obscurity: Jiang Yan and Ruan Ji -- Appendix: Jiang Yan’s Poems in Diverse Forms -- Works Cited -- Index. Imitations of the Self reevaluates the poetry of Jiang Yan (444–505), long underappreciated because of its pervasive reliance on allusion, by emphasizing the self-conscious artistry of imitation. In context of “imitation poetry,” the popular genre of the Six Dynasties era, Jiang’s work can be seen as the culmination of central trends in Six Dynasties poetry. His own life experiences are encoded in his poetry through an array of literary impersonations, reframed in traditional literary forms that imbue them with renewed significance. A close reading of Jiang Yan’s poetry demonstrates the need to apply models of interpretation to Chinese poetry that do justice to the multiplicity of authorial self-representation

"The images devised to accompany medieval commentaries, whether on the Bible or on classical texts, made claims to authority, even inspiration, that at times were even more forceful than those made by the texts themselves. Pictorial prefaces of the twelfth century represent commentaries of their own; they articulate and elaborate complex arguments regarding critical matters of faith. This study examines pictorial programmes in copies of Horace's poetic works, the Glossa ordinaria, anti-heretical polemics, and Rupert of Deutz's commentary on the Song of Songs to demonstrate the ways in which they helped to shape understandings of authorship at a critical historical moment."

Cover; Title; Copyright; Table of Contents; Introduction; Novel pastimes and merry tales; From the printer to the reader; Sonnet; 1 First tale, by way of preamble; 2 Of the three fools, Caillette, Triboulet, and Polite; 3 Of the cantor of Saint Hilary in Poitiers who compared the canons to their stews; 4 Of the bass of Rheims, cantor, native of Picardy and master of arts; 5 Of the three newly wed sisters and how each answered her hus- band cleverly on her wedding night; 6 Of the husband from Picardy who drew his wife away from wanton love by upbraiding her in the presence of her parents. The Nouvelles Récréations et Joyeaux Devis of Bonaventure des Périers are here translated for the first time into modern English. The translators have been successful in retaining the vitality of this important French Renaissance satirist, turning his colloquial sixteenth-century French into equally colloquial and lively American. The translation of the 129 tales is prefaced by a biographical study of des Périers both as man and artist, and a critical bibliography is also included

The Book of the Knight Zifar (or Cifar), Spain's first novel of chivalry, is the tale of a virtuous but unfortunate knight who has fallen from grace and must seek redemption through suffering and good deeds. Because of a curse that repeatedly deprives him of that most important of knightly accoutrements -- his horse -- Zifar and his family must flee their native India and wander through distant lands seeking to regain their rank and fortune. A series of mishaps divides the family, and the novel follows their separate adventures -- alternatively heroic, comic, and miraculous -- until at length

Zuo Tradition ( Zuozhuan; sometimes called The Zuo Commentary) is China's first great work of history. It consists of two interwoven texts - the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu, a terse annalistic record) and a vast web of narratives and speeches that add context and interpretation to the Annals. Completed by about 300 BCE, it is the longest and one of the most difficult texts surviving from pre-imperial times. It has been as important to the foundation and preservation of Chinese culture as the historical books of the Hebrew Bible have been to the Jewish and Christian traditions. It has shaped notions of history, justice, and the significance of human action in the Chinese tradition perhaps more so than any comparable work of Latin or Greek historiography has done to Western civilization. This translation, accompanied by the original text, an introduction, and annotations, will finally make Zuozhuan accessible to all Chronology of dynasties -- Volume One -- Lord Yin -- Lord Huan -- Lord Zhuang -- Lord Min -- Lord Xi -- Lord Wen -- Lord Xuan -- Volume Two -- Lord Cheng -- Lord Xiang -- Volume Three -- Lord Zhao -- Lord Ding -- Lord Ai -- Place-name index -- Personal name index
