Inflation can significantly undermine companies' relationships with their customers, employees, and other stakeholders, spawning a crisis of trust. This is particularly true in a period when many citizens accuse corporations of excessively raising prices to maximize profits. Studying the cross-sectional reactions of US stocks to inflation over the period 2018-2022, we find that in the month following a higher inflation rate, equity investors reward firms with stronger social capital, as proxied by their corporate social responsibility levels. The effect holds using different measures of inflation, including region-specific ones. The inflation-hedging property of CSR is stronger for firms headquartered in Democratic US states (those most exposed to the "corporate greed'' narrative of inflation) and for firms with higher customer awareness and intangible capital. Overall, the findings spotlight inflation as a crisis in stakeholder trust and provide new insights into the importance of social capital for firm value

What do asset managers believe regarding the financial performance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investment strategies? We address this question by exploring the relationship between fund managers’ co-ownership and portfolio ESG performance. Managers with more “skin in the game” exhibit significantly lower ESG performance in funds they manage than their peers. ESG performance is sensitive to changes in managerial ownership. Co-investing managers were less likely to increase their stake in high-ESG stocks after an exogenous shock in ESG-driven fund flows. Moreover, the negative effect of managerial ownership on ESG performance is stronger for managers paid to maximize assets under management, and weaker for managers paid exclusively to maximize financial returns. Overall, the results are contrary to what one would expect if managers really considered ESG strategies an enhanced form of portfolio management

Environmental, social and governance (ESG) funds are among the fastest growing investment styles. ESG funds can be used either to only mitigate risk (input ESG) or to go beyond that to create impact (output ESG). We argue that the governance by ESG is characterised by three potential transmission mechanisms: ratings, shareholder engagement and capital allocation. These mechanisms can create sustainability impact or constitute 'ESG gaps', if they remain ineffective or unutilised. Based on financial data, an investigation of ESG methodologies and expert interviews, we provide a novel market analysis of the ESG industry, focusing primarily on the capital allocation mechanism. Our findings highlight that while ESG indices could have an impact, most currently do not meaningfully facilitate sustainability - we call this the 'ESG capital allocation gap'. This has important implications because without effective transmission mechanisms, ESG funds cannot have sustainability impact on companies and the real economy

Promoting social information reporting and disclosure can promote sustainable banking. The paper aims to measure banking social sustainability by constructing a new interval-based composite indicator using the Thomson Reuters database. In this work, we propose an approach to constructing interval-based composite indicators that enhance the composite indicator's construction sensibly, allowing us to measure the uncertainty due to the choices in the composite indicator design. The methodological approach employed is based on a Monte-Carlo simulation and allows for improving the information the composite indicators can obtain. So, we measure the value of the social indicator and its subcomponents and the value's uncertainty due to the different possible weights. The results show that the best international ESG practices in European banks relate to French and United Kingdom Banks, primarily than Italian banks. Finally, we analyze innovative perspectives and propose policy recommendations, considering the growing attention to the issue of ESG disclosure and its adherence to reality, to support sustainable banking ecosystems

Retail investors are an essential group in shaping the effects of ESG investing and ESG assets under management are growing at an exponential rate. This study of retail investors' demand generates first evidence on their ESG-relevant decisions. In general, ESG was regarded as a highly interesting topic by retail investors, indicating that its role in financial decisions will further increase in the future. In practice, the portfolio of companies chosen to represent ESG values varies substantially across different funds. We found that, for most retail investors, ESG values have a meaningful relationship with each other. Nevertheless, there is no general agreement on how to fulfil these values. Only few relationships between specific ESG values and measures of achieving ESG values (MAVs) were determined. Moreover, no relationships were found between MAVs and indirect ESG values. Nevertheless, some MAVs had reliable relationships with each other and could be ranked according to controversiality, indicating that MAVs could be clustered for optimal representation of retail investor preference groups. Most retail clients prefer a financially optimal investment, but a meaningful group would accept lower performance to support their values. This confirms additional non-financial utility of investment decisions: Association or dissociation with certain ESG values.

Implementing the complex Agenda 2030, with its high global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires, in the by now short time horizon of reference, an extraordinary effort, at all institutionals and private levels, to converge effectively on the whole system of intermediate and interrelated targets. At the same time, it is highly strategic to ensure macro and microeconomic financial long term balances among public and private sectors. The role of Sustainable Finance, in this context, is absolutely central. On the legislative side, the evolution of international directives, from Non Financial Reporting to Sustainability Reporting, impose to pay attention to new criteria and contents, also in order to distinguish deviant greenwashing phenomena. The paper compares the main frameworks, concerning the multiple and complex dimensions of Sustainability, like the institutional ones (MDG, SDG, BES) and one of the most widespread standard of non financial reporting framework (GRI) adopted by companies. The study aims to identify suitable criteria to allow the development of a simplified integrated analysis model of all targets and indicators established and currently in use, in order to converge effectively on the SDGs, to implement coherent public and enterprise's policies and to produce realistic sustainability reports. The identified suitable criteria are the so called "ESG" criteria, increasingly recommended in the context of Sustainable Finance and by Supervisory bodies, as drivers in sustainability analyses, portfolio selection and rating determination. The paper, therefore, shows the results achieved by comparing these frameworks according to the proposed classification based on the individual E-S-G criteria and on their possible combinations (ES-EG-SG-ESG), through multidimensional matrixes of each goal, dimension, target and indicator (n.° 855) of the examined frameworks. The analysis quantifies the importance of environmental, social and governance drivers and the importance of their combination for each framework considered and also through them altogether. As mentioned in this paper, further analysis by the author leads to develop, according to this ESG simplified classification approach, a new enterprise internal framework, to integrate both sustainability and financial drivers, into Corporates strategic investment decision models and internal capital allocation (tangible and intangible) policies. In this way, the integration of sustainability criteria in all enterprises' decision-making and risk management and control processes, becomes more effective and coherent with the Sustainable Development Goals. Consequently, the complex frameworks analysed, may become more easily comparable and integrated at an application enterprise level.

Mit Beiträgen von Alina Alexenko | Alexander Bull | Eren Dogan | Andreas Ebner | Manuela Ender | Tim Alexander Herberger | Hannah Jäger | Michael Kuttner | Konstantin Lübbe | Anna Luginger | Christine Mitter | Jörg Müller | Martina Sageder | David Schroff-Spiering | Marcel Tyrell | Moritz Wehking | Stefan Wendt | Konrad Wimmer Digital transformation and sustainability have become central topics in research and academic discussion in the financial sector and have found their way into finance literature. However, it is surprising that these topics have only been linked to the content of financial risk management in a rudimentary manner and that its cross-sectional function needs to be represented more in the discussion. This anthology, therefore, addresses the opportunities and risks arising from these two topics with a strong application focus on financial risk management. Furthermore, the book considers both digital transformation and sustainability within a broad definitional framework, thus lending it a broad scope and different perspectives. This paper examines the integration of ESG performance metrics into executive compensation using a detailed panel dataset of European executives. Despite becoming more widespread, most ESG metrics are largely discretionary, carry immaterial weights in payout calculations, and contribute little to executive pay risk. Such ESG metrics with arguably weak incentive power are common in financial firms and large companies, particularly for their most visible executives, which seems consistent with greenwashing. In contrast, binding ESG metrics with significant weights, which have potential to influence incentives, are only found in sectors with a large environmental footprint.
